...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
It's crazy how much voice over work he's done. I just finished MGS2 today again and I actually never checked if the Phil La Marr who played Vamp is indeed the same as the Mad TV guy. Hehehe, guy's got some skills if he's always appearing in every dialogue heavy game.

Dead

well not really...yet
I didnt realize until this year that its the same Phil LaMarr.....always thought it was some dude with the same name :/

This is why I give a mega rolleyes to people who say that the US doesn't have prolific voice actors like the Japanese

With all the work they do on Every Single Thing Ever, people like Phil LaMarr, Rob Paulsen, and Cam Clarke must ride to work together on the same bus.

Maurice LaMarche + Billy West both do a *ton* of work as well.

I'm not even sure what Maurice LaMarche's real voice sounds like, he's most well known for that Orson Wells / Brain voice that he does, but looking over his portfolio of work he's done so many different roles.

Billy West also did a ton of great stuff as well. Stimpy, Fry, and even the honeycomb's bee.

It's always amazing to find that 5 different voices you know are the same person. Brain is also Morbo and animated Egon Spengler!?

Of course, Billy West pulled that trick on me, and all I had to do was look at the Futurama credits. o_o

He's got nothing on Frank Welker

Thank you. Frank Welker = greatest voice actor living today.

Of course that's not to speak less of the great voice work performed by everyone else mentioned in this thread so far. Everyone, that is, except for Rob "95% of my voices sound like Raphael from the original TMNT" Paulsen.

That reminds me. I didn't want to start a new thread about this, but remember when the earliest rumors regarding MGS:TS hit? Remember how it all originally spawned from "some guy" on a message board claiming that his father was doing the new voice for Grey Fox for a GameCube MG? Well I was thinking about it the other day and I remembered how I went to middle school with Rob Paulsen's son and that he was the only other person I knew that was into video games as much as I was. Seeing as Rob Paulsen does the voice for Grey Fox in MGS:TS, I'm guessing that it was his son that leaked the existence of MGS:TS.

This thread seems like a good place for my recent observation:

So I've been watching some Darkwing Duck episodes that I downloaded, and it's annoying as hell that Dan Castellaneta's voice for Megavolt is exactly the same as his Krusty the Klown. It's extremely jarring and keeps me from being engaged in the universe whenever the character shows up.

Heh, same happens to me when I hear his version of the Genie from Aladdin. Homer all the way.

Phil's a very cool guy. We hung out at E3 one year. Someone there came up to compliment him on his work with Samurai Jack and asked if he did the voice for the (just announced GBA game by BAM). He asked me about the game and I offered to go show it to him. All these people were lined up waiting for their press dog & pony show in the BAM booth and myself, Phil and his friend all walked in with attendee badges like we belonged inside. I asked someone where Samurai Jack was and he pointed to the back and we headed there. It was only 30%. These 2 people kept staring at us when we arrived. Phil was trying to play and it kept crashing and such so he asked me to explain what he was playing on so I was, and this tall british guy came over and said with this "higher than thou" attitude "Can I help you gentlemen? I'm the head of the studio in Bath who made this. This is Samurai Jack for the Gameboy Advance. Have you ever heard of Samurai Jack?" I just smiled and pointed at Phil who smiled and said "Why yes, actually. I'm the voice of Samurai Jack."

The guy's jaw dropped and he started being really friendly. He dragged over the black woman who was also watching us and told her who Phil was and she started freaking out. I asked Phil to pose with the banner they had and she ran off to grab her camera to get the same photo. After this we ran into David X. Cohen and some Futurama/Simpsons people and had lunch. We saw some other stuff, went and tracked down Marty/Darknight... and then Phil had to take off. I ran into David Cohen again and Matt Groening showed up... thanked him for the Futurama stuff he did earlier that year for me. They took off and I kicked myself for not getting a pic... but at least I have this one:

:lol I love stories like that.

I'm a big fan of his as well. Many people also forget his major/minor role in Pulp Fiction (he was the dead guy that Vincent and Jules had to clean out of the back seat).

I've been playing MGS2:S lately and it's insane that the same guy that does Vamp is also the voice of Hermes from Futurama. That's a lot of range.

one would think that voice acting is quite easy to do, hey its just reading some lines on a page into a mic... well thats what i thought, until i actually did some.

i have nothing by the highest respect for professional voice actors, especially ones with the range of LaMarr and Welker.
although i would like to see more diversity in the industry... it seems there is a small group of (top class) professionals getting all the gigs and its all starting to sound the same.
i recently played Invisible War, Freedom Force and Kotor and the overlap was astonishing.
in addition, i think we are all a bit tired of Cam Clark and David Hayter...

OT:
one VO of recent years which really impressed me was Tom Hall and his Walton Simons. truely an origional sound, his Pal-18 in Anachronox is completely different. quite a range.

Planescape:Torment has some great 'celeb' VO work. Director Skinner no less.

He was on Cold Case this Sunday playing a cuban dreadlocked drugdealer.

Yeah, he sounded like yoda.

"Listen to the streets you must."

"The Kennedy Brothers you must seek."

Those aren't the exact quotes, but they might as well be.
