Philips DVD players... question about image quality

I'm thinking about buying a DVP642. My question is how well is DVD video decoding on Philips players? The PS2, while lacking feature-wise (and using the controller unless you spend $30 on a decent remote is a rip off), has excellent dvd video playback. Crystal clear. I never see any artifacts, distortion, noise, etc. For $70 I would hope that dvd video decoding is better than PS2, considering the PS2 has been out for a long time and the DVP642 came out last year.

Dude, the PS2 blows for dvd playback. Almost any dvd player will look much better in my experience.

Heh, I've seen Samsung, Apex and Toshiba standalone players playback (commerical) DVD movies and while good, they still do not surprass PS2's image quality. I'm serious, I can't understand why either. The Samsung player is very close to PS2, but there are slightly more artifacts. Apex almost rivals PS2 but is a notch or two below. Toshiba players demonstrate hardly any compression artifacts, but you do notice more noise in the image (kind of like the DivX "film effect" feature). THAT looks like shit. It's like... grainy. I hate it.

Well, I shouldn't say ALL Samsung, Apex, and Toshiba players are like this. But the ones I saw were.

Weird.

I have experience with one Sony DVD player and two Panasonics and both wiped the floor with the PS2. Really no comparison. I guess it does depend on the player.

The reason why people think the PS2 has great playback is because the PS2 overly sharpens its output. On composite cables to a tv with generally blurry image quality, the playback will look fantastic.

When you hook it up to a TV that already has a pretty crisp and clean image with component or S-Video, the PS2 artifacts are far more noticable. Of the DVD players I've used, it has the worst playback quality.

That has been my experience as well. Of course I never played my PS2 using composite cables so maybe that explains it.

Not to mention the PS2 seems to take forever to load up a dvd compared to other players and with the controller it takes forever to fast forward (is this better with a remote?).

I've actually seen it first hand. I used to have a generic GE TV and everything was hooked up to a switcher which went through a VCR that acted like a composite>RF adapter. A really, really shitty way to connect stuff to a TV. The PS2 had great playback.

Then I got a TV with component inputs and the PS2 was easily the worst of the bunch. It's basically built to be played back on low end stuff.

So... you're saying that the PS2 is so um, undetailed yet sharp that it fools you into thinking the image is crisp (thanks to s-video or component), when really, a player like the Philips (I'm assuming) shows MORE details, even if the image is more grainy or lossy looking (because of those extra details the PS2 can't show)?

Ugh, so confusing!

btw, I use component for my PS2. My TV is a Sony Wega.

my DVD player is a philips 963SA. It rocks - some of the best images I've ever seen. Of course, it has a faroudja scaler/deinterlacer so that helps. But they generally have good pictures.

For cheap players, Toshiba are pretty much the best out there. Their budget player has progressive scan, plays divx, mp3 and has great image quality.

The progressive scan output on my slim PSTwo didn't look too bad. I never made a comparison with my real Sony DVD player, though.

I believe that phillips DVD642 is a rebaged apex, and it doesn't have very good quality on my set. Apex is gutter trash, but it'll play your shit.

I got the European version of the 642, the DVP630 & i'm very satisfied with this player :)
Have a PS2 and a commerical DVD? Mind comparing?

Rebadged Apex huh... what does DVD video playback look like on yours?
