Photo restoring. Any advice/help?

I know nothing about photo retouching and thought I'd turn to GAF for some help. My parents gave me this pic to mess with with:

photo11fy.jpg

It has some scratches, and is yellowed. With my minimal ability, I was able to remove the scratches and desaturated the picture.

So what do you think? Too dark? Should I leave it as the original colour? Is it possible to get rid of the glare in the top left of the photo?

Anyway, basically I'm asking for advice. Thanks in advance!

I've got no advice but I have to ask... is that guy on the right holding a head in his hands?

Holy shit it's Quato from Total Recall!

It'd be pretty hard to remove the glare... you'd basically have to fill in detail that wasn't there to begin with (i.e. with the lady's missing eye, etc). The only things I'd do different is scan the image in at a higher resolution if possible, and make it a little lighter. Just do auto-contrast on the original image and you'll see the contrast level I'd go for on this one.

Here's what i did:

1. Selected the left eye, copied it onto a new layer, flipped and rotated it, and adjusted the transparency of the layer to blend it. Use the eraser tool to smooth out the edges a bit.
2. Manually adjusted the levels (auto-levels made it a bit too high contrast for me.
3. Used the burn tool very lightly (~15% pressure) on the highlights in the face, then in the midtones around the mouth to add a little depth to the face.

It's always a good idea to copy your original layer. Just drag the layer onto the new layer icon on the layers window. Like the poster before me mentioned, scan the photo at a higher res, ideally the highest optical res of your scanner.

Very nice, Aoi. You're definitely right about the contrast. As far as fixing the face goes, it will take some practice to do as nice a job as you did.

Anyway, thanks a lot.

Paint Shop Pro 8 has some pretty neat and very easy to use photo retouching tools... I usually do: Fade correction, Clarify, and Sharpen.

I wish you had a higher res version of it.

What I did was auto color>auto levels>auto contrast

Copied, flipped, and rotated her left eye, and put it where it should be.

Set the color mode to grayscale

toyed with the brightness and contrast for thw whole pic

toyed with the brightness for the eye

used the smudge tool on the face of the girl with the eye, and on the woman in the back.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Honestly, the original still looks the best IMO. Post processing on older pics looks very noticeable. Much more so than something more recent.
