Christie Elaine and my sister, Kris.

I've discovered for myself that if I zoom in a little and use the point focus on the focus of my picture, the background blurs a great deal and leaves the pictures with a 'movie still' look.
It took awhile for me to learn to use this well, but it has really paid off and I'm generally more pleased with the overall look of my pictures.

I took a photography class last year. Fun class, developing film and learning how to make images sharper, duller, hi-res, low-res. Wish I could take it again.

And with that first post, this thread is a train wreck waiting to happen ;P

Anyway, I've learned that I can take great pictures through pure dumb luck not knowing anything about photography.

Well, I certainly don't mind the content. :)

How much for your sister?

The life of her husband and the death of the side of her that hates technology and loves the outdoors.

She's 28 and is a rockclimber/backpacker ourdoorswoman.
Just got done with a tour of EU and is about to open an adventure hiking place to lead backpacking trips.

Here is the BW one.

What would you say the ratio is between the time you actually spend interacting with this "Christie Elaine" compared with the amount of time you hound her with a camera?

I started in August of this year, and as of last month I've learned that I still suck and my camera still sucks and I still have a hell of alot to learn.

Damn you Olimario, pan down. PAN DOWN! Ahem, anyways, you've got a good eye for photography, and it seems like something that could make for a great hobby. As others have already said, that digicam certainly takes some very sharp pictures. Of course, this is coming from somebody who knows nothing of the field. Personally, I own an older 3.3MP Olympus C-3000 camera myself, but I have zero talent when it comes to using it. Half the time I can barely hold a camera steady enough to take a decent clear shot. I may have to take a community college class on the stuff. Here is a pointless picture of a lizard lurking outside my front door...

Keep up the efforts, I like your pictures, and those last ones did actually remind me of HL2. Oh, and keep snapping pictures of that hot little girlfriend of yours. I'd be pretty camera-happy myself if I had her around my arm. :D

We have a lot of beautiful sunsets here, too.

I <3 your camera, Oli.

I brought mine to a Halloween party, and I kinda like this one...

The first wedding one is brilliant, all the others are fantastic.
That first wedding one looks like it should be in National Geographic. Absolutely perfect.

And I enjoy your city ones. You seem to have the same goal I do in photography; To capture the moment.

Not to get down on anyone specifically, but I think some of you need to try either interesting things with the camera or at least interesting compositions, as a lot of it is simply basic photos of cool objects. When you're just going for sweet photos, something more than a cool subject goes a long way. When it comes to photojournalism or something of that nature, sure, all you really want is a photo of the subject, but otherwise, do something cool to accentuate the subject. Mess with the focus, different lenses, composition, etc.

wow, karasu and nitewolf, both of your first night time shots are incredible. I'm jealous :)

Now, my pics suck ass -- let me warn you -- I just got a digital cam one week ago, so I'm barely learning the whole concept of photography, aperture, focus, exposure times, and the whole shibang on how they work together. A lot of these shits I've taken are just spur of the moment "let's see what this cam can do" images. Please excuse the following suckage :)

well, Dan might be a wuss (kidding!) but I'm going to play critic.

the self's portrait - localized lighting + semi-monochrome look =good!
the city shot with the bridge - superposition of planes gives a very good composition... the shot going into the horizon, with minimal color, is really appealing to me.

...the one with the stairs has a really nice color quality contrast, but the composition is way too centered; also, the portrait of the woman on the bench is good, but perhaps a bit blurry.

mattiewheels
the halloween shot is fun; you chose a very challenging way of dealing with light (directly against it) and a bit more subtlety might have given better results... (and it's kinda blurry).

3pheMeraLmiX
the last shot is nice! simple and dynamic composition.

karasu
the angle for your first picture is good, but the end results seems slightly blurry to me... can you set the focus on your camera?

olimario
you obviously have a high-quality camera ... but I can't say the composition is eye-catching to me. sorry!

you can now proceed to the stone throwing! ;oP

Oli, The blur effect is created by opening the aperature of the camera right up.

If you zoom in as far as you can optically and have the aperature closed as tight as it can go (like F22) the image will still be relatively crisp foreground to background.

If you open the aperature up (F5 or lower) the depth of focus gets smaller. It is possible to have a person in crisp focus and have the entire background a cool abstract blur if you know what you are doing.

Depth of Field is an extremely important element when creating photographic compositions.

Thanks for the details on what it is I'm doing. It'll help me as I learn.
I'm just happy I'm learning depth of field.

You may have seen images where a girl's face is in perfect focus but her shoulder is out of focus. These types of shots are generally done at distance with a 350mm lens that can drop down to F 0.5 or even lower. The farther you zoom in, the more light must pass through the lens. What is going to happen is your shutter speed is going to drop down because of a lack of available light.

Remember, the shutter speed must be equal to, or higher than the mm number of the zoom for the subject to be crisp and without motion blur. If you are shooting with a 300mm lens you need to be shooting above a 300th of a second. Unlikely because the only way you are going to get that kind of shutter speed is by shooting on bright days or with faster film / digital setting.

lacks enthusiasm.
Took these over the summer while I was on vacation in Canada. I took a trip to Europe in the 2nd half of June and I've got so many pictures that weeding them out has proved too daunting for me to get around to it. Maybe sometime during winter break...

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
What can I use to clean up photos that are grainy due to too high an ISO setting? I know there was some mention of photo post-processing apps, but forgot the names.

Here's an example of the grain I'm talking about:

My camera really sucks, so I mainly take macro shots.
I've learned to use a better background.

for easy shallow DoF effect, stand/sit a few feet away from subject, zoom into their face, open up the aperture as much as you can (lower number = greater opening), focus, shoot.
9.jpg

the bigger the telephoto, the better the effect.
interestingly enough, the macro modes in most digi cams can simulate it very nice, just look at your macro shots. some clever photograhers use the macro mode to get good DoF shots of normal subjects, though its tough to do.
