We have 7.0.1 here at college.

What are the real advantages of CS?
Which version do you guys use?

I've noticed that some of the key assignments are a bit different, with my brief expierence, and it's a bit annoying.

Anyway, which version is better?

Nothing drastic. Some nice features like text on path, Flash export, layer comps, better file browsing and some colour correction tricks, histograms etc.

6 was fine for me for years. I just got CS and there's no real difference. More brushes, but whatever. That's not what I use it for. There aren't many differences.

Oooh... not right now, no. I'm sure a new version is in the wings. If you're not using Illustrator, text on path is kinda irrelevent. The other stuff is just mostly for convenience.

Yeah, resolution independant. Every line or shape can be freely moved and altered (colour, shape etc.)
It's all based on bezier curves and points.

The brushes used to all go on a little tab. Real easy find and select the size and shape I need and change on the fly.

Now they're all on this drag down box. Takes forever to go thru them to find the right brush.
Or is there a way to display the brushes like how it used to?

4.0 had them... I only used 3.0 very, very briefly a while back and can't remember exactly if they were there, but I think they were.

IIRC, 5.0 didn't have adjustment layers. Blending options may have been different or practically absent as well. FWIW, 5.0 is still a very competent piece of software. i've got 6.0 and i don't remember the changes in 5.0 being that major. Adobe's really good with not adding fluff to their products, but if i was really strapped for cash and need Photoshop (and not Photoelements), i'd hunt down a version of 5.0/6.0. Chances are you'll be able to upgrade from these versions as well.

No adjustment layers? are you sure? Can hardly remember... Blending options weren't as comprehensive, but were there. About time that text on path got added though!

Funny. I was just looking at the CS "About" section and found "What's new in CS?" I can't remember much out of it, though.

Doesn't CS introduce Action Scripting? My friend was showing that to me the other day.

Also, from experience, CS seems to be better in terms of rendering and starting up. Maybe the code was optimized to run faster or something. Or maybe not, I don't know. But it seems to run faster for me.

P.S. The photoshop Elements line is underrated. I use it more often than the original line programs.

Adjustment layers where brought in 6, 7 brought the heal tool, which is a must in may opinion, and CS brings us the most integrated version with the Adobe suite yet. The way text is handled is much improved and the layer comps is a new thing, although I haven't really used them yet. I love CS, I find it extreamly easy to use and I had no problem going from 7 to CS. The brushes are not bothersom at all, I right click on my canvas with the brush tool and it brigns up my brush options, I choose them, right click again, ans start painting. Seamless.

No. Actions were introduced in version 4.0.

Anyway, CS was a pretty weak upgrade. Not quite as bad as 7.0 but a lot of effort has been spent on integration with other Adobe apps, color precision and new photography features. A lot of the basic stuff that needs to be improved hasn't. The last two Illustrator upgrades have been substantial OTOH. Pretty lame IMO.

Note to Adobe: Give us envelope distortion in Photoshop 9 and you shall be forgiven.
