Physical Releases - News & Discussion Corner |OT| Physical Games Are Dead, Long Live Physical Games

Why is this game rare?

I did not claim that it is inherently a rare game, but rather, I simply feel that it is slowly becoming rarer. This is a subjective perception based on the decreasing frequency of finding the game on display in stores.

I could imagine that we are now at the point where supplies are dwindling and thus the game may become more expensive in the future. Similar trends were observed, for example, with Alan Wake, Chernobylite, or Berserk and the Band of the Hawk.

Looking at P3P and P4G availability at VGP makes me wonder why the hell did I need that stupid dual volume sleeve, lol.

Separately picked up Live a Live, Unicorn Overlord and Triangle Strategy physicals for the Switch from fairly decent eBay deals, all new.

I should have probably done the same with LGR Persona titles, but didn’t want to lose the chance to get some of my favorite physical games and didn’t realize at the time VGP carried them.

And I do want that System Shock release, but man, FPS on consoles just don’t mesh with me, lol.

Oh, and I did pickup Witcher 3 Complete, Infinite Wealth, and P3R for PS5 on sale. What’s lacking is time, lol.

Speaking of Alan Wake it looks like brand-new copies are being sold for around $100 on Ebay. Wild stuff, as a year and a half ago I bought my physical copy for just €15.

I know right? Got my copy for 20€, it's still sealed and conveniently, I still have a few weeks of PS+ Essential left and redeemed Alan Wake back then. Playing through the last 2 chapters today - so no need to break the seal.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

This is often on sale on digital for $9.99.

The one bad thing about physical is that once something is out of print, it becomes expensive real fast.

Yeah, they probably did just one print for the retail release and that was it. Usually you see this from small pubs/devs, but I guess the sales just weren't there to justify a reprint.

I've also noticed the same thing with Scorn Deluxe, which I got for €40 back in October of last year when it released on PS5. It's now out of print and listings on ebay for sealed copies sit around $70 - $80. :/

It is a modern plastic case with no manual. There is no reason to ever buy "sealed" for these kinds of games. You can buy it right now for 40-60 USD on ebay, non-sealed.

Yes, it's true, I also like to buy used and don't need everything sealed, unless it's a title that I don't want to play but own anyway. Scorn would be an example. And yes, you're right, even if it's silly, but a game like that would of course remain sealed to preserve the value. As long as there are people who will pay that much money for the sealed copies, it's a nice investment, even if I don't consider it speculative. I enjoy having the games on the shelf. But if things get tough at some point, for whatever reason, a games collection could be worth some months of rent.

Sometimes I even buy a game twice to have one sealed and one for playing ...

But the price development isn't always comprehensible either. When it was announced a few years ago that Utawarerumono was disappearing from the Playstation Store, I quickly bought Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth and Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception for €20 each. Although Mask of Truth is the better rated game, it is currently priced at 18€ new and Mask of Deception at 103€.

That's what I hate most about current day.. you really have to stay on top and put more money out up front than ever to keep on top of everything you want because otherwise the price shoots up even if it's just somewhat over retail. All generations before you could go at a leisurely pace and while sometimes certain games would have a low print run and become hard to find, most would be plentiful and at better prices later on relatively speaking. Amazingly aggravating.

game.co.uk lists Metro Awakening for £59.99 / 70.11€ / $76.11

I'm pleased to be able to buy the game physically, I was afraid I'd have to do without it like I did with CotM.
This will be the game for which I will dust off and unpack the PSVR2 again.

Did you play it? How did you like it?
Great! My next purchase: Metro VR 100%. (But man, the price!)

Shame to say but both Hubris and Vertigo 2, still sit on the shelve since I still play 2D game: Ghost Of Tsushima.
But I will play it soon - from what I heard the game is great (just look for youtube reviews).

Recently got bunch of titles off Amazon and eBay.

- Shovel Knight Switch
- Wonder Boy Collection Switch (not the better one)
- Baten Kaitos 1&2 Switch. Amazon had this one for $45 which is better than Play Asia
- Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol Switch

And I also grabbed a few PS5 titles on sale
- P3 Reloaded PS5
- Infinite Wealth PS5
- Wonderboy Anniversary Collection PS5 (this is the better collection, but Switch version was too much )

I think my Switch collection is the largest out of all consoles, lol.

Mine certainly is as well! I haven't counted them recently, but I must have well over 150+ Switch games on my shelves.
I haven't looked at my currently-packed-up Xbox 360/PS3 era collection, which is pretty damned large, and I have a boat load of PSP, Vita, etc physical copies, but Switch must be the current king.

I just can't stop collecting them!

Yep, I usually grab a few games here and there constantly as long as it’s titles I want to play, performance on Switch isn’t utter 💩 and it’s not outrageously priced.

I think my PS2 collection was the biggest but Switch overtook that.

My April so far ... 135h of casual gameplay according to HLTB
I don't even know when to play all these games.

Stellar Blade next!
Great pick-ups there! Also, did they ship your Talos Principle II Deluxe early? Hoping to receive my copy as well this Friday.

Great idea.
I would love to find which PSVR2 games are going to have disc releases. I buy almost all of them and I will never buy digital ever again.

I will be editing this post with updated list of PSVR2 game physical releases.

Here is my humble PSVR2 game collection if you are interested:
7w1QtGK.jpg

I plan to buy in March:
Vertigo 2
Hubris

EDIT:
Added to the collection (steal sealed, since I play something else now, but soon I will play these games)
jGeMAwl.jpg

My new addition to the collection.
We need to support publishers who release physicals, buying those games, I did my part here, and will be buying more.

This is the way

Man I wanted to buy old Pokemon GB/GBA/DS games but they are all so expensive now.

Yep, I'm glad I tackled this a few years ago. The games have now doubled in price and more.
CiB versions in particular have become excessively expensive. And people try to cheat you with reprints and repros.

The retail edition of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe for NSW and PS5 is now up for pre-order on Amazon. Probably coming soon to other retailers as well if it hasn't already happened.

Maybe you are interested but I started playing Hubris first and I will keep Vertigo for later date, and I can say already it is great looking VR game, maybe the best I have ever played and I just finished Red Matter 2.
Particularly this scene on PSVR2 is really amazing.

I know right? What a deal!
Love it! It probably was one of my most anticipated physical game releases this year, and at a very generous price (they could have asked €50 for it and I would have still bought it, no questions asked).

Props to Croteam and Devolver Digital for this awesome physical release!

I agree. And now, side by side, I'm a bit jealous of your PEGI version, the 4 times bigger German USK print just looks like shit - regardless of the game.

Yeah, the USK logo is way too damn big, lol! I have several physical copies of games I love with the USK rating on them, and it bothers me more than I can admit. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Found a PS5 copy of Alan Wake Remastered brand new at a local store for 18€, I've read somewhere they are getting pricey?

I don't even have a PS5, lol.

Also found a PS3 copy of Spec Ops: The Line for 5€, I see them going for 25 - 30 online since the game got removed from the online stores.

I'll keep an eye for them, you used to find lots of them for cheap in every second hand stores in my area.

Also found this thing for 5€, never heard of it. I just assume that when you have cute/hot anime girls on the cover it'll automatically go up in value later.

Damn, Spec Ops for 5€ is a nice find. I really liked it when I caught up with it earlier this year.
Got to put it on my PS3-games-to-get list as well.

I'm not trying to brag (okay, maybe a little bit!) but I just snagged an unopened copy of Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena for the Xbox 360. It better fire up on the Series X when I get it!

Wanted to highlight a recent finding, OPUS: Echo of Starsong (VN-style adventure game), which has received a physical release on the Switch last month, but only in North America. It's available at most retailers, including Amazon, however, considering the niche genre it belongs to, it's likely a limited print run. If you're interested in these types of games, I'd highly recommend grabbing this one sooner rather than later.

Kinda sucks though that it didn't receive a release here in Europe or Japan since there's a sizable portion of VN/Narrative adventure fans, but I just don't want to miss out on owning this game physically. I'm sure I'll regret it later on, so I'm planning to import an ESRB copy later this month.

The OST is super well done and very moody:

Do note that there was a printing error where they incorrectly put that dreaded download required label on the box. The game is actually complete on cart!

Just saw these new PS5 listings for RE2, RE3, and RE7 at my local specialist retailer. I did wonder why Capcom never did a physical re-release of these games, considering how popular they still are and the fact that they already received digital PS5 versions quite a while ago.
JJnrDdu.png

I'm also slightly annoyed as I bought the PS4 physical version of RE3 just last month.

Would be nice if RE7 was PSVR2 compatible, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Unlikely, I checked the product page for RE7 and it says it has just PSVR support. Now I wonder if they'd at least put all the DLC on the disc.

Also, the pricing seem to be €25 - €30 per game. In any case, best to wait for official word from Capcom, which hopefully should come soon.

Both Talos 2 and Pacific Drive have amazing cover art!

Nothing new this week for me, but next week sees Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes and Stellar Blade, both for PS5, excitement! (even though I'm still playing FFVII Rebirth and Unicorn Overlord)

Major game releases will not even fit on a disk.. having a disk does not mean you have a playable game..you're actually better off with a purchase from GOG where you can download the installer, and download the patches and keep them backed up.
This is not the thread for such discussions, this is exclusively about the appreciation of our favorite medium.
There are other threads where you can talk about the advantages and disadvantages of the respective medium.
Here we are happy to receive pictures of your collection or your personal tips on physical releases :)
