BELLINGHAM, Wash. (CBS Seattle) — One doctor is calling for the end to the “war on pubic hair.”

Family physician Emily Gibson made headlines recently for her public assertion that modern women should shy away from the practice of bikini waxing – which she referred to as the “war on pubic hair” – as the practice increases risk of various infections.

“The amount of time, energy, money and emotion both genders spend on abolishing hair from their genitals is astronomical,” said Gibson in an article on KevinMD.com. “The genital hair removal industry, including medical professionals who advertise their specialty services to those seeking the ‘clean and bare’ look, is exponentially growing.”

Hair removal in the United States cost Americans a whopping $2.1 billion, according to news website The Independent. And not long ago, photographs of young female celebrities leaving little to the imagination were seen on a near-daily basis, the exposed nature of the pictures showing just how prevalent the trend of pubic hair removal has become.

Gibson, who also reportedly serves as the medical director of the health center at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., additionally noted the negative health implications of the practice while explaining the biological purpose of pubic hair.

“Pubic hair does have a purpose, providing cushion against friction that can cause skin abrasion and injury … [its] removal naturally irritates and inflames the hair follicles left behind, leaving microscopic open wounds,” she noted.

The risk also extends to sexually transmitted diseases.

Said Gibson, “Some clinicians are finding that freshly shaved pubic areas and genitals are also more vulnerable to herpes infections due to the microscopic wounds being exposed to virus carried by mouth or genitals. It follows that there may be vulnerability to spread of other [sexually transmitted infections] as well.”

Bushes fault.....

I always thought this was weird and stupid. There are some functional benefits to shaving, but the "ugh, a BUSH.. YUCKY!" movement perplexes me.

I'm assuming pubic hair evolved mainly as a signal that a person was capable of reproducing. Not really to prevent friction.

I think it's the unkempt, wild and extreme versions that freak people out. Experienced both, and the middle ground has always kept me the happiest. Keeping it neat = keeping it clean = the smartest way to go about it.

Everyone is entitled to their personal choice though, so if someone wants to smooth it off then by gum, whip out that razor and get to work. This is America.

I have never understood why men want a grown womens vagina to look hairless like a little girls.

Seems pedo-ish to me.

It's not that they're yucky, it's that:

1 - a mouthful of bush when you want to tickle somebody's parts with your tongue is rubbishness defined
2 - with the hair gone, the contactable surface area is increased and receiving oral for both sexes gets tens times better than it already was

Uhh hmm. Right. What?
He also thinks 20fps is a great framerate. Ignore the man.

That's the worst article I've read in a long time. You have none of those risks with trimming and the $2.1 billion spent on hair removal is most likely for all kinds of body hair, not just pubic hair. Also the risk of hepatitis on used razors isn't mentioned. Hepatitis can survive up to 4 days on a razor and I suspect there might be tons of businesses who reuse them.

I would agree that waxing is a little extreme, a $30 "body" trimmer lasts a year and only needs to be done like once a week.

Sorry girls, but I think most men would still prefer it if you kept it cleaned up down there. Its actually a bit of a deal-breaker for many people. Borderline for me.

A grown woman naturally has pubic hair on her vagina.

A little girl does not.
Should they not shave their legs, either?

It isn't icky it sucks getting a pube in the back of your throat.

I...I think I see what you did there. Maybe.

Anyway, I always figured it was somewhat...painful to go all the way, and additionally found that it's scratchy if the recipient (in this case) falls behind. Just my 2 cents.

It's not painful and it's smooth if you do it on the regular. (I'm talking about shaving though not waxing.)

I don't think it's icky. I do think it's inconvenient.

Yeah, I get that for some people it's not their cup of tea, and that's fine. But holding the notion "It sucks getting a pube in the back of your throat" to a different standard than "It sucks getting shit on my dick/in my mouth" or "It sucks getting a load of cum in the back of your throat" is silly when they're all just different subjective opinions on a variety of sex acts.

The idea that shaved is some kind of objectively better way to do it isn't necessarily always the case, plus it ignores that in some cultures, thicker pubic hair is a sign of increased sexual attraction.

I'm fine if you prefer to trim it, or if you understand the risk and take precautions, but just mindlessly saying "LOL, fail, trim that shit bitch" sounds kinda ignorant.
