Picked up Freedom Force

Woohoo!

FF.jpg

Game plays very much like the original, looks like the original as well, but the enviroments and effects are much better. More of the same and that means fun, fun, fun. I'm doing the tutorial now, everything is quality (sound, effects, atmosphere). I installed some kick ass skins, and will get to work on making their abilities after a few levels. Spidey and Cap looking good.

No one cares. :(

I experienced some problems with the game. Namely annoying sound problems with certain gunfire, and strange graphical problems here and there (Words staying on the screen, characters moving all around or not moving at all, screen turning dark). It really sucked. Anyhow, they seem not to be happening now, or as much. Hopefully they don't show up again, or I figure out how to deal with em.

Anyhow, aside from that the game just kicks ass. I was reading a reprint of Captain America #15, and FF takes so heavily from that era of comics...its really great.

The graphics are really nice, the effects are cool as hell. More of the same, just done better.

Old skins work well for the most part, there are some problems with certain ones, and I'm still waiting to find out about hero files...but its pretty solid. I made a half decent Spiderman (without webs right now), and its really awesome to see him dodging bullets gracefully.

I care, the first one was great and the second one will be in my possession shortly. Looking forward to trying the multiplayer.

:)

I still need to figure out how to get web effects, but I really like my Spidey. Cap is cool to, but I need to get a brain on how to make him work like he should. My Hulk is pretty cool, he punches guys and they go flying, and he runs the risk of flipping out and attacking his teammates. Oh yeah, the regular campaign rocks too. I LOVE this game.

The game is gorgeous. Alot better looking than I remember the original being. I still can't get into the overly cheesy dialogue and story of the single player campaign though.

It (the dialogue) really fits into the era though. I was reading Captain America 15 today, where the Red Skull finds out Caps secret identity. You know how? He knocks him out and checks his wallet. Then Red Skull steals Caps costume and goes out masquerading as Captain America to the higher ups in Washington. Nevermind he has a red skull where the mouth sticks out of the mask...you see, he hides it with the shield in front of his face in every panel and no one is the wiser. :lol

There are skins for FF2 already? :-O

You can use some of the same ones from the original, you just have to mod them. Its working pretty well, they just need to fix the FX files and hero files, as well as some of the meshes and it'll be perfect.

Bumpage for FF.

Well, since the mod community will take a little time to figure out how to import all the meshes and FX, I've takena break from making most of the heros. As it stands now, I've got a Hulk who can jump really high and run like in the movies, gets nuts and breaks anything in site, and oh yeah, bullets bounce off of him. Spider Man is awesome too, the way he dodges looks really true to the comics and movies. Unfortunately I haven't figured how to make his webbing yetm I will though. So, in the meantime I'm playing the actual campaign and its coooool.

The new heros are pretty fun actually, and Green Genies origin is allot of fun.

More impressions, I remain strong.

The first thing that strikes out at me about the game is like its playing a living, breathing comic book. I think thats the goal irrational was going for, and in my book they succeeded. I've been reading allot of Golden age comics lately, and FF2 is near identical to them in every way (Look, dialogue, characters). I'm really taken with that aspect of the game, since I really appreciate that era of comics.

The new characters are just terrific. The top 3 I have encountered so far would have to be The Bard, Red Sun, and Sky King. I also have to give an honorable mention to Tombstone, who is an undeniably cool character with one of the better origins in the game.

The Bard is a hilarious character. While I try and remain as masculine as possible, his tights are just fantastic! The way he walks and fights is just so fitting, what a solid character. Bravo to the creator.

Red Sun is one of the best villains I've seen in a game. He's hysterical. His attacks are cool, and his phrases are so cheesy and good.

Sky King is perhaps my favorite design. His voice is just so fitting, and his flying suit is really, really cool. One poin that underwhelmed me about him is that his chain guns lack impact soundwise. I was so surprised by the lack of buildup before the fire (considering the cool animations) that I updated my sounds drivers in hopes I would hear more to the gun. Alas it wasn't to be. Anyway, he's an awesome character aside from that with some really cool super powers.

I could see any of these characters, and many others in FF2 being actual Golden Age heroes. I'd read their comic.

Tri Colour's (SP? The French chick with a sword) origin really had me cracking up near the end. You'll know it when you see/hear it. Or maybe I'm just strange.

The various effects and overall clean and colorful look of the game make it pretty darn impressive in motion when lots of stuff is going down. The first boss battle with Nuclear Winter is massive, and extremely impressive with the various fx going on. The amount of damage in that and most battles that can be caused is really one of the trademarks of this game, and one of the reasons its so fun to play.

For bugs I encountered some annoying ones. A few times my screen went very dark in rumble room mode. Also, I encountered audio bugs in rumble room mode where pistols would sound like garbled ray guns, and the cocking of the guns would be repeated like a stuck record. Fortunately, that seems to happen infrequently now.

The campaign mode and story is more interesting then the last game imo, its better written I think. One aspect I am dissapointed in is that not all the heroes have origins. I'm not sure if The Bard has one, it may show up later. But, I think he and others are certainly deserving of their own origin movies. Also, its kind of half baked how some of the heroes just show up without any back story on how they joined Freedom Force. The only reason I say this is because the game is so solid it just seems out of place.

Skins and models from the 1st FF still work for the most part, you just have to change them around a bit. FX effects are a bit tougher, and people are still working on it. I hope they get it soon, because I want to make Cap throw his shield. As it stands I made a perfect Doctor Octopus. He's so cool. His tentacles have all sorts of cool animations, and they help him deflect bullets and dodge in really cool ways. Plus its great to be able to pick up a truck with em and fling em.

Comic cover loading screens are pure quality.

Overall, even with a few loose strings I am loving this game. I hope it gets the acclaim it deserves.

I'm glad to see this game get some love. I had a blast with the first one, and enjoyed the demo tremendously. Where'd you find the Marvel skins for FF2, Biff? I thought Marvel's finest attack hounds had them removed from the net...

I briefly played the original demo and that is it.

I know, I know don't hurt me!

So how is the storyline for those who didn't play the original? I'm gonna go pick up Tribes: Vengeance since I neglected it for so long and am thinking about doing a two for one Irrational special!

Marvel did issue a crackdown, but no one really seems to follow it. :lol

The skins will have a text file to tell you where to get the mesh you need. You can still use most meshes, you just have to change the "keyframes.kf" file to "character.kf"

FX effects such as Captain Americas shield throw are still unknown how to get working, at least to me. If anyone finds out about this, please let me know.

I made a badass Sub-Mariner. He's so friggin cool. My Wolverine is damn good too. Still putting the finishing touches on Hulk and Doc Ock.

Get it, man. Its damn cool. The mod community is huge, making skins that are possibly better then the actual developers...some of these skins are really impressive. Hell, people even make voice packs for the heros.

As for the story, its silver/golden age comics at their finest/chessiest. If you are at home with earlier Captain America issues, you'll know the flavor they took with this game. The dialogue pokes fun at itself, but its clever. Its a great game for you not to take things seriously and have some fun with.

The story for FF2 is that through a double cross against the Freedom Force team (think of em like the Avengers), the Nazi's have won the war. So, FF travels back to the time of Hitler and are trying to take down the Nazi regime and super powers that are backing them up. Its allot of fun. You can step right into it.

Does it still require you to search out little canisters in the environment to upgrade your heroes? I really hated that in the original.

Oh, indepth discussion sweet. As for the whole Marvel suit thing I never understood it. How many damn ideas did they steal from DC? Geez, relax Marvel.

I picked this up on saturday but still haven't had a chance to install it... WAAAAHHHHH!!!!

hopefully tonight after my daughter goes to bed.
