I'll wait for the biologists to chime in but some fish like parrot fish gnaw on coral and expunge their waste (mostly coral minus yummy algae) into the ocean. This waste becomes sediment (sand AKA dead coral) which can wash up onshore. I believe the majority of sand is broken-up coral due to waves/tides.

and.. yeah.. isn't glass/sand/silicon all the same thing? I dunno

edit: oh! i looked it up! "One parrotfish can produce 90 kilograms (200 lb) of sand each year." ... add up all the parrotfish and you got yourself a shitload of sand.
