Pillars of Eternity – Turn-Based Mode Beta Announcement Trailer

Such an amazing game. Surprised at the hate toward real time with pause - was all the rage for the games that this was directly inspired by. It would seem to be like a ton of work to convert this game to turn based - interesting they chose to do that. Might need to replay Pillars soon, loved it.

Hate is a strong word

I played through them and loved it. I am debating if I want to rerun for turn based because its a long replay but if I had originally a choice when it was in kickstarter? I would have preferred turn based.

There was a lot of debate about RTwP back when it was on kickstarter I recall, it was not without resistance. Obsidian forums and RPG sites had long lists of pros and cons for both. Pages and pages of debate.

I think commercially RTwP is a harder sell to begin with. Hard to deny that turn based cRPGs have enjoyed immense success.

It's more popular right now by a huge margin.

If Obsidian takes the time to update a 2015 game for this mode the stats going around must be indicating roughly the same.

In the video he admits they messed up with the turn based version of Deadfire.
How exactly? I read the game was tuned for rtwp encounter wise. And that's why when you play turn based. You only see one or two group fights in a dungeon because with turn based the encounters would have gone on for ages if they kept the amount of enemies they have with pause.

Some of the stats became worthless with the change to turn based. He specifically brings up speed.

Eh, I've always been and am still happy with real-time with pause.

I've always been fine with the rhythm of pausing, making commands, and then seeing the faster result like managing in a city sim.

Hopefully they tuned the encounters well enough to fit with a turn-based system.

I actually don't mind RTWP but I do know that I had to redo some of the harder fights because things didn't turn out as planned which I think wouldn't have happened with turn based combat. Fantastic world in the Pillars games, well worth playing through including the DLC.
