LONDON (Reuters) - Four members of seminal British rock band Pink Floyd will play together for the first time in 24 years at London's Live 8 charity concert for Africa on July 2, publicists for the event said on Sunday.

Guitarist
David Gilmour, drummer
Nick Mason and keyboard player
Richard Wright will be on stage with bassist
Roger Waters for their first public performance since they played at London's Earls Court in 1981.

The rock legends will join a star-studded line-up including Coldplay,
Elton John and
Paul McCartney at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, organized by activist rocker
Bob Geldof to pressure rich nations to ease African poverty.

"Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world," said Gilmour.

"Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention then it's got to be worthwhile."

The band released their first album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" in 1967 and broke records with 1973's "The Dark Side Of The Moon," which remained in the American album charts for more than a decade.

In the 1980s relations between Waters and the rest of the group soured, with Waters suing over the rights to the Pink Floyd name.

Gilmore, Mason and Wright continued to record and tour as Pink Floyd, releasing their last studio album "The Division Bell" in 1994.

Oh God, I need to go to sleep, this is too much to ingest....

What the fuck does that mean? "Test the waters"? Gee, let's see if a Pink Floyd reunion tour would do well.....I DUNNO?!?!?!1 DURRRRR

Seriously though, a Floyd reunion tour would be massive, and even as the non-concert-goer that I am, I'd so be there.

I don't know much about Pink Floyd, but in the last 2 decades haven't there been plenty of concerts and performances by a group at least billed as "Pink Floyd"? What was the lineup for those?

Well, the most important omission (short of Sid, yea yea, I know) would be that Roger Waters hasn't played with the band since 1981. Later tours had Gilmour doing the vocals.

Is this that band that plays Free Bird?

I think element went to Lazer Floyd a couple weeks ago.

EDIT:

PS the band would be better if this lad were in it:

I liked the band until Bruce Dickenson left to join Cream. The guy they used to replace him, I can't remember.... the guy from Judas Priest... I think his name is James Taylor. Anyways... he was alright but I would have been on board 100% of they replaced him with the guy from Quiot Riot instead. Ray Charles I think his name was.

I saw Pink Floyd in 1994, seventh row center on the floor, first show of the Division Bell tour. Price: $35 + $4.75 Ticketmaster charge. I still have the ticket stub in my wallet--the print has faded so that it's barely readable.

If PF reunites for this Geldof thing, good. If they reunite for a concert tour, I have a feeling the ticket prices will be out of control--too much for me, even with Waters on board. I hope not, though.

YES. Not so much because we see the 4 together again, but that Waters has buried that nasty controlling jones he had for long enough to heal.

PIGS HAVE FLEW, (and will fly again, too)! :D

You are a disgrace to your Lou Reed-referencing username.

Well, this was the hot rumour a couple weeks ago. Not knowing the full history of this band, I can't grasp how big this announcement appears to be. But the reactions in this thread are certainly telling. :lol Would be great for Floyd fans if they did a world tour next year, which wouldn't have trouble selling out no matter what they charge.

A world tour would easily surpass any previous tour by any band ever. They could play night after night at the biggest stadium in the world and charge $100 a ticket and it would still be a sell out. I would sell my soul to see Pink Floyd, especially for the lasers.

Exactly. Unlike any other band, I would fly to the ends of the earth, and pay my life savings to see Pink Floyd play. Being young (26) I never really got the chance to see them live.

Unfortunatley, I doubt this will ever ever happen. July 2 is too soon for me to fly to london to see them perform a couple of songs.

I really really really really hope this goes well and they'll be all like 'hay guys lets world tour'

I'd sell vital organs for that to go through.
