Pitchfork's Top 50 List (I think the #1 is overrated, but most of you will like it)

Hitman

Edmonton's milkshake attracts no boys.
There's some good stuff on the Fiery Furnaces album.. But to get to it you have to sit through some pretty cringe worthy stuff. That being said inspector Blanchette is an awesome song minus the beginning interlude part.

I like two songs from those bands, combined. :lol

Seriously, though, where's American Idiot? College Dropout? The Blackpool Sessions?

those are awful albums, come on. though i mean the music is worse, GAF's music website would be like reading the back of some high school desk.

It's a very strange list, that's all I can say. The Arcade Fire is overrated by all means, though I think it's one of those "pitchfork statements", just like last year's #1 (which could have been #1 by its own merits, but was more of a "hey, it's 21st century already" thing). Animal Collective is... good, but also unnerving and definitely niche. Franz Ferdinand's s/t debut was a real shock (and I am no indie kid, it's just so good, so inspired and deliciously hedonist even some metalheads friends of mine kind of like it -word) and should've ranked higher. I don't know. Just... strange. I also have a personal problem with The Fiery Furnaces, and Madvillain's just plain boring compared to King Geedorah's last year kick-ass album (not to say it's more-of-the-same).

I miss DiCrescenzo.

Edit: Is it me or last year's looked much better? As far as Pitchfork's concerned, of course (which is a tiny part of the spectrum, a lovely one).

DiCrescenzo's favorite music included SFA and Blur. He may have written some strange reviews, but he had taste.

Dead

well not really...yet
Man I cant get into that Joanna Newsom album....at all...Decent list though I wouldnt put the arcade fire any where near the top 10.

Animal Collective is another band that for the life of me I cant get into.

I dont think I could make a top 10 myself at this point, but it would likely include motherfucking McLusky who was shunned by this list. Hipinons is much better.

It wasn't his tastes, actually. I am not the biggest fan of Blur out there, not to be blunt. But he was funny and ingenous. Not consistently but every one in a while, of course, and that's more than I dare to ask for. Now all that's left over there at Pitchfork is dogma, and I find it boring (lists included).

Still, I get most of the stuff under best new music.

On a sidenote I'll say most of the people in these forum (off-topic) who bother to talk about music have a decent taste (and by that a don't mean "mine").

I won't argue though. I'll just say it.

Boring. A few glaring omissions.

I will say, though, all this talk has me really interested in the Annie chick. I'm gonna pick up Anniemal tomorrow.

i didnt like anniemal too much, but the go team album is all sorts of hip and cool. its freaking trancendental, but #1 it's not. :)
i've gotta check out some older material from phoenix as well, i really enjoyed alphabetical (not in the list either).

Even though it's Pitchfork, I'm surprised they picked Ghostface's album. It wasn't a tremendous year for hip-hop overall, but I wonder what the fuck they were listening to where Ghost's Pretty Tony is one of the best albums of the year.

It's good (what Ghostface album is trash?), but very average for his admittedly high standards. Little to no replay value, and pales in comparison to Supreme Clientele, let along Ironman.

Even "The Blackpool Sessions," which isn't out except in bootleg form--a White Stripes album--which I put in there to see if whoever dissed my picks would ignore that fact and talk out of their ass.

Looks like we have a winner, guys!

the white stripes have written 3 great songs and 2 good songs (and done one good cover). and i don't need another copy of them, thanks.

edit. to be fair i did think you were talking about the white stripes dvd not whatever random bootleg this it.

Yeah, I'm a bit unimpressed with the lists, all of them, though the Hipinion one is probably the best of the bunch. You got me, Sirpopopopopopopopop.

Things that are glaring to me in the PFM list:

-All the love for Joanna Newsom, and zilch for Vetiver. The Vetiver album was leagues better than Milk-Eyed Mender, and I really like MEM....
-Fabulous Muscles at 50? Fuck you.
-Showtime at 16 is kind of ridiculous, it wasn't very good at all. A Grand... was a bit high, but it is really good.
-Franz Ferdinand was way too low. HALO THER INDIEBACKLASH!
-No Hot Snakes? No John Vanderslice? No Ted Leo? WHAAAAAT?

Yeah, whatever, list, schmist. My list is right, guys.

1. Hot Snakes - Audit in Progress
2. the pAper chAse - God Bless Your Black Heart
3. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
4. Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets
5. Vetiver - Vetiver

This coming from the guy who used to have the Madonna avatar. :lol

Why the FUCK do you Americans like The Streets and Dizzee Rascal?
Klashnekoff is better than both.

yeah gurl ya fit don't ya know it- get the fuck out of here.

I was about to moan how crappy, mediocre, talentless and tuneless some of these top10 choices are, but then it's maybe better not to spread negative energy.
Instead I'll just say...Indie rock = DEAD.

Shit I actually liked from Pitchfork's list, especially Annie (best bubblegum pop since...) and Go! Team (should be #1 among these choices I agree)

49: Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks
28: Junior Boys - Last Exit
21: Fennesz - Venice
15: Annie - Anniemal
08: The Go! Team - Thunder Lightning Strike
I'm a little surprised Annie wasn't higher on their list, even though it still did well. Especially surprising after two singles from it were placed highly on their top 50 singles list, Chewing Gum in the 20-11 range I think and Heartbeat at #1.
I'm not surprised with their #1 album, Pitchfork has always been indie rock inclined.

lots of good stuff in the top 50, but pretty uneven...i've heard some cuts from the foreign exchange's "connected"...and they are quite good, but #22?
i've heard my first DJ kicks album's very recently, thanks to the Thievery Compilation mix...reading that Kings of Convenience also has one DJ kicks album out makes me triply interested now.
they also missed...pinback and my album of the year, the organ's debut along w/ Kings of Convenience's riot on an empty street and lali puna's faking the books.
Connected is a really good album, and it's placed highly mostly because of innovation. Pitchfork are always all over artists that innovate right off the bat, and artists who fix problems they had previously. It's not a bad philosophy at all.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Oh yeah, Elliott Smith's final album is completely awesome too!

I think it's my favorite of his, and it makes me mad to listen to it and think of all the lost potential...

The White Stripes are getting lots of hate from people who probably liked em before they got big. I hate that stupid indie "they sold out" mentality that's been lingering for like 20 years. Elephant was their best album yet, without a doubt, so what if they got popular.

And I still haven't seen any mention of The Libertines either here or on those lists. Actually, it's on that mostly shitty Rolling Stone top 50 list. Does anyone KNOW them at all? I mean, they're pretty big.

Because you're totally pretentions if you don't like cock rock, pop-punk, or 80s metal.

Different strokes for different folks doesn't just refer to masturbation techniques, duder.

Not really Jackass. I can't say that you can pin the White Stripes hate on the indie "we hate big bands" mentality, when people are also praising Madonna in this thread. :) Of course, that mentality is non-existent now that indie bands are starting to seep into the mainstream.

Teddman - Normally I don't like to flame someone elses music tastes, but Velvet Revolver?!?!??!?!? Quite simply put, they are one of the most generic bands in rock music today. Honestly, whenever I hear Velvet Revolver on the radio, I can't tell the difference between them, Stone Temple Pilots, Days of the New, Nickelback, etc. You're telling me that a band like that deserves praise?

Give me a break. If you're going to criticize a list, you can do a lot better than that. A good start would be actually listening to the albums on the list before labeling them as "pretentious crap". Of course, coming up with a criticism better than "pretentious crap" is also something that you can do too. Everyone here has heard that line at least 10,000 times.

But if you can't tell the difference, how do you know it's Velvet Revolver you're hearing on the radio? Either you're exaggerating or you're as guilty of not "actually listening to the albums" before you criticize as I presumably am. Caught you in a logical fallacy there.

Anyhow, I did agree with at least one of the top ten picks. Ghostface's Pretty Toney Album rocks.

Aw, come on. Modest Mouse had one big hit, indie bands aren't mainstream because of it. Float On was really an oddity, too. In the industry right now, I'd say Modest Mouse will never have another hit that big, ever. If it happened, indie bands wouldn't be "indie" anymore, cause their labels would either get big, or they'd sign on big labels.

The fact that indie bands are getting big doesn't prove that indie fans are not hating big bands, by the way. That argument is completely flawed. Indie bands have gotten mainstream since the beginning of rock music, and that mentality has ALWAYS existed.

I don't understand what you're saying. But I do understand one thing -- The Libertines fucking SUCK.

i havent heard the green day album yet, but the VR and Megadeth albums sucked!
you'll notice the lists are mostly non-mainstream based though.

Smile was the best record of the year hands-down. The Arcade Fire is a "hip" choice from Pitchfork, though the record is decidedly mediocre. It was nice to see Dungen at no. 13, if you haven't checked out that record, I'd strongly reccomend it.

And whoever has the Neutral Milk Hotel icon in their tag, Sirpopopop, I believe. Kudos. God that record is amazing.

:lol Absolutely terrible. I can understand Green Day and Megadeth, but Velvet Revolver is the worst music I've heard this year.

Uhh... because the DJs on the radio say what song it is before they play it and after they play it? Maybe that could be it...

Yep, caught me there didn't you! Oh you're so slick!!!
