PixelJunk SideScroller - E3 2011 Screens and Info

I'm not being unfair. I'm a consumer. I'm really only interested in what I want. If I don't like what I'm seeing, I say so. I'm not by any means obliged to support a developer regardless of what they are doing. I am not obliged to buy every single title if it doesn't interest me. I feel that the Pixeljunk series should continue to do what made it popular in the first place, instead of recycling projects.

That's where I don't agree with you. It seems to me you're passing on this game based on factors that have nothing to do with this game, such as how many other PixelJunk games were released in the past year. I personally never buy or pass on a game to "support it". I choose where my money goes exclusively based on how much I want to play the game.

For my part, I love the controls in the PixelJunk Shooter series. For ship controls it's the equivalent to jump in Mario. Sidescroller is a game that takes that, a pretty rad art style and puts in a completely different kind of game than the Shooter games were. That's more than enough to make me interested, and from the previews I saw the reception seems pretty positive as well.

It's a shame you're not interested but it is what it is. Thanks for clearing it up.

No. I'm passing on this game (for now) because I saw the gameplay footage from E3, and I dislike what I am seeing. That is the first and primary reason above all else. The concept is interesting (sidescrolling shooter), but I don't like how it looks, and I don't like how all the enemies are right out of Shooter. That is a turn off because I've had enough of those designs and it didn't look particularly engaging or fun to be fighting the same stuff again.

The other elements that have nothing to do with this game, are elements which make me a bit more annoyed at the direction of the Pixeljunk series in general, because there have not been any announcements which appeal to me personally. I don't like what Lifelike is because I'm not interested in music stuff. I don't like how Sidescroller looks. So I'm disappointed because I'm not seeing stuff I'm interested in, unlike previous years where Shooter and Shooter 2 looked really cool and I was excited to eventually play them.

That's basically how it is.

I don't see why me being a mod is even a factor here. I sure hope that people don't agree or disagree with me because of that, since it has no bearing whatsoever on the quality of my opinion. :(

I've just noticed the same kind of "hostility toward opinions" with Amir0x in similar threads. But then again, this might be GAF's way and I'm only noticing it because you're so clearly marked (or just so funloving people).

Regardless, this looks uninspired to say the least. And that's the first time I've thought that of a Pixel Junk game. But then again, I've felt that all of them range from okay to good. They've all been fun but never the artistic pieces of pixels they aspired to be.

So we're only a couple of weeks away from launching this little baby - it is SO good some of you will have to eat your hats! "flat out lazy" indeed! ;-)

This game is such an utter blast to play from beginning to end, everyone's going to love it to bits.

I'm sorry, but I like how you completely ignored the fact that there is reusing tech, and then there is completely reusing assets. I'm definitely not going to buy Sidescroller if the ship, enemy, and environment sprites are simply recycled from the Shooter series. It's lazy and your developer is better than that. I don't think anyone has an issue with reusing tech on principal, but this is a completely different matter.

I think it's pretty clear that Sidescroller is in every way a sister title to shooter. This is not Dungeon or any other PJ game, it's an entry into their shooter series. I see zero "problem" with them reusing any technology (wtf?) or assets (for a title that is a shooter, clearly inspired or a part of the shooter universe).

Also to call them "lazy"? I'm sorry, but if they want to make a shooter that is clearly inspired by the Shooter series, with a visual twist, then why not? Lazy is an extremely insulting word, considering they're still doing a decent amount of work. For all you know, the art team is busy hammering away at PixelJunk Dungeon, and this spin off / side game for PJ Shooter is done by a much smaller team.

I get that you don't like it, but a lot of your posts come off as pretty offensive to the folks working on it, and a bit disingenuous to the work that they still have to put in. It's very "side line" coach, if you get what I'm saying.

Game looks great to me. There's a total dearth of original side scrolling shmups on PS3, and what's there is mostly meh and amateurish (Soldner...), so I welcome this with open arms. The asset reuse doesn't bother me at all, and the fact that they use fluid tech is a big plus, especially with the forced retro particularized look making it look the way it does.

Yo Dylan will you release maps for PJ Eden? Especially the Encore levels. It is very frustrating to play a level for an hour and still be missing 1 or 2 seeds.
