"Spider Silk Is Never Perfect" by shirakaba

Great painting but WOW, someone needs to lighten up on the sharpening + filters. The picture is decimated by it, and the subsequent lack of a focal point.

So much good stuff in here. I'm gonna have to get some english translations on this thing so I can find more stuff. Keep it all coming :)

I particularly like the contrast between the fantastically detailed backgrounds and the more simplistic/iconic characters (as anime/manga is wont to do). It's so lovely. It's liek children's book illustrations on a very, very sophisticated level.

Makes me sad again about how a lot of "Western" art doesn't capture the same amount of whimsy and colour, being so obsessed with realism or pseudo-realism.

If looking at amazing art boosts your confidence thats so good.
I used to get so freakin depressed when I used to spend all my time looking at amazing art and just dreaming of being that good. You get used to it, now I use it as a 'I've gotta be this good otherwise I'm not gonna succeed'.
This thread is making me wanna paint so hard,
gotta go fast!

I'm trying to use it as a motivator but it's getting me down hard. I just gotta step up

Keep in mind that some of this art strongly falls within the "trying to impress as hard as possible"-category.

Personally I tend to focus more on smaller images that are still amazing in terms of technical quality for inspiration rather than the huge pieces that are meant to blow you away.

The "blow you away" pieces are a combination of talent, patience and lots and lots of time.

I've done something in that direction in the past and it paid off relatively well in terms of how much it impressed people, and in a way I'd still consider it my best piece in terms of how impressive it is, but that has no real bearing on genuine technical skill.

If you can get good enough to casually make say, a single character around the quality of some of the images posted here, that alone is a much easier and reasonable route to travel.

Also better for your self esteem, hahahah.

You just gotta remember, the thing that sets most (99%) of artists apart, and the reason they are so good; is hard work and practice. There is no reason anyone or you can't do that. And you gotta remember, from what I see, these pixiv guys are the MASTERS of patience and dedication.

Some stuff I've found now I signed up;
So much amazing stuff on here, major inspiration drive right now:

Keep in mind many of these artists are professionals who have been practicing for many, many years. I wouldn't let it get you down.

Holy mother of god!

I would so fucking love to have some of these printed!
Does the site offer prints? OR HOW DO I DO IT JUST TELL ME

This thread first poked, then pushed, and is now mouth punching and donkey kicking me over the line between admiration and envy. No wonder I still haven't stopped calling myself an "aspiring" artist. ;_;

I used to think Pixiv was the most compelling thing on the internet other than porn, and then I discovered that Pixiv has porn too...

Dat perspective.

Surprised it took this long for the first Touhou picture to show up in the thread, though I guess that speaks more to the incredible variety of amazing art on Pixiv than anything else, really.

Also, the general concept of Pixiv Fantasia, not to mention the fact that it's on its fifth iteration so far, is really cool.

Some artists offer prints. Check the descriptions of images for details. pixiv itself, however, does not offer a print service.

It is a mighty fantastic place.

Also,

There's a good one from this artist i was going to post, the girl in the bikini, but its a bit too racy :P.

The problem is not bikinis but the examples they set.

If you've ever followed the hot women threads you'd notice that it always goes full bikini -> bits of cloth tied with string -> just string and so on.

Until they got locked.

It seems like Pixiv artists use more color and focus more on high fantasy concepts. Don't crucify me though if you disagree, I am no expert.

Cultural differences I expect.

Cultural differences I expect.
Not really.

If you want varied, unique, interesting, colorful, whatever, western art: http://forums.cgsociety.org/. It's a forum for Those Kind of People, though, to be fair.

The problem is DA is full of a bunch of uninhibited wannabe artists who have no shame in posting the most embarrassing shit. Pixiv may have some duds, but overall the quality just seems to be better on average from my random browsing? Granted, I don't browse either often so I could be completely off the mark on quantity vs quality on both counts.

Anyway, I like this thread. :D

Funny thing is, while just skimming through the stuff there, all the pieces that really catch my eye are from Chinese artists.

Maybe I'm just biased.

Yeah, a lot of these are kind of...empty.

I do love many of the ones with people in them though.

Well, at least for me anyway, there's a proclivity for finding stuff that makes a good wallpaper so my pixiv treasure trove is heavy on the landscape type stuff.

There is a lot of that to be sure. In particular the fanart there is often pretty horrendous.

What bugs me about DeviantArt is that there is a so much stuff not related to normal drawn and digital art like photography, banners, signatures, etc etc that bog down the site and make it more difficult to find good artists than pixiv. In general I don't like navigating the site, and it takes longer to find good stuff since you have to sift through so many pages. Combine that with all the "premium" bullshit, good artists only making smaller sizes of their work available for download unless you pay, and a larger amount of bad art in general on the site just makes it much more of a hassle than pixiv. I don't doubt there are good artists on the site, but personally I just have never really had a good experience using DA. I do believe the average quality is lower on that site though, at least in the types of artwork I am interested.

I like that site you posted btw, quick browse brought up some good looking stuff. Thanks for linking it.
