Is there a hardcover version? I'm seeing the $25 paperback version on Amazon, but I don't trust myself to keep a paperback pristine.

Huh, in australia the price is $50.

I kinda don't mind that seeing that's the average price of art books here, but hmmm.

I can't really ship from overseas either, so I'm probably stuck with that price.

Have you considered ordering from Amazon.jp?

Surely they ship to Australia.
 
Don't you need a japanese credit card?

Plus I'm sure whatever shipping it has will bump it pretty close to $50, seeing that it's already $40 converting from yen to AUD.

My address as of now is incredibly troublesome when it comes to international shippers anyway.

I'll probably bite. Art/design books here are ridiculously overpriced but I still buy them. :p

I don't believe so, no, but then again I imagine American credit cards are accepted everywhere.

I guess your only choice is to swallow the $50 :(
 
Well, you have to remember that people here are separating the wheat from the chaff.

Most of the regular stuff in pixiv is like deviantart. Some good, quite a bit eh, and alot of disturbing shit.
 
The book is great. Interesting seeing stuff you've appreciated just as a bookmark on a full page.

Something I don't get, all these amazing artists on Pixiv, how comes more Japanese games don't have better concept art?

This shit is fantastic, I'd hire every one of them if I was in charge of a dev company.

I would say "Illustrate a mind blowing world for me", and they would, and it would be glorious.

I know! I keep seeing these amazingly beautiful worlds, with gorgeous art styles and thinking "I'd buy that game day one." I have to keep reminding myself that these aren't screenshots/concept art for some new JRPG or something. :(

I would like to hazard a guess (truly a guess);
From what I know and see, a lot (not all) of Japanese artists like to do very illustration based work in a very detailed and spectacular way. I find they are always want to have very crisp, tight, detailed, and 'perfected' work. This is pretty much the opposite of what you need on concept art. You need full environment designs done in 1-2 hours, not 20-30 hours. Maybe it means that more artists are drawn into doing illustration based work because of this.
Also you look at a lot of the work and it wouldn't really make that good concept art. Its mostly style over substance in terms of the 'design' going in.

Potential other reason; it might be that it just isn't a big deal to them in their industry. Maybe environment artists and modellers are confident enough to do their own designing? It's only recently become a big thing in the western industry (5-10 years).

The 'cross over' point seems to be China. Chinese games have tonnes of insanely good concept art, and obviously with a more eastern approach to art/design.

This is all just my guesses from what I know/see (mostly see).

Illustration and concept art are two very different things.

You can change the site's language to EN. It won't change anything people submit, but it will make it easier for you to navigate at least.
 
I would wager they used just a few textural brushes and possibly used some light texture work that they masked with brushes (pants).

If you want/need some textural brushes, there are plenty out there. Judging by the look of it, though, it could potentially be one of the default textured brushes included in PS.

Bump. Can someone explain to me how to sign up for Pixiv? Apparently you need it to search for shit and view stuff in hi-res. I keep trying, but it doesn't seem to be working.
 
Oh wow, Pixiv Fantasia. Hard to believe the 8th one will start next February.

Is there a Pixiv Community Project thread on gaf? Any gaffers that like participating?
