Usually I play 20 dollar buy in, 25/50 cent limit games with my professors and some local guys. But a cowoker invited me to a poker game he goes to regularly that's 50 dollar buy in 50/1.00 no limit (100 dollar buy in after 10pm).

It was my first no limit poker, so I was a little freaked out when I saw people going all in preflop, or throwing 20 dollar raises like it was nothing. I quickly wound down to 10 dollars about an hour in the game, and thought I was done for. Luckily I was hit with pocket Aces, and threw all in got up to around 100. From there I climbed up to 200 dollars, and really really wanted to get the hell outta there, but my ride was still in the game... so I just had to play conservativly.

I started losing money, got down to like 150, and figured I was just going to sink down into nothing the rest of the night. Late into the night I get hit with pocket Kings and threw in a big chunk of my remaining cash. Won with two pair. So I walked away from my first no limit game with 315 dollars... wasn't bad.

Though, I'm not going to do that crazy shit for a long long time.

wow, good job! i used to play poker a lot, but i haven't played in a very long time now. i was never very good at it anyway... it's great that you won some money. i think it would be too daunting for me.

I'm playing my first ever tournament (and my third ever GAME involving money) tomorrow morning. Costs $25 to get in, I think there are around 40 - 60 people, you get $1000 in chips, $10/$20 to start off (but I think you can go all in, I'm not quite sure how it works), top 6 people get cash prizes. It's only $25, so I don't mind. I'll be really surprised if I make it out of the first table.

also happened to play my first no limit game of poker a few weeks ago, it was also my first ever competitive game of poker ever. It was a fun night. I knew what I was doing due to watching endless hors of the WPT (World Poker Tour) and I decided to go all Gus Hanson in my playing style. I managed to win one pot with pocket deuces after checking on the flop and forth street and then going all in on the river. I also managed to lose everything by going all in with pocket aces after I saw an third ace come up on forth street then I got beaten by 3 kings and two queens.

But I love the game, winning a huge pot with a bad hand and after bluffing you way through it all is one of the best feelings ever.

Maybe I'm just tired and my brain isn't fully functioning but, how did your Ace trips get beat by 3 kings and a pair of queens? What cards came out on the table other than your Ace?

Actually, that doesn't sound right to me either. How could somebody else pick up a full house without you getting one that was better?

maybe i am not remebering right or mixing up two different hands, what i typed does not add up now i think off it all i know is i lost when i was sure i would win the hand.

I never have seen any world championship poker or anything, my only experience has been from the weekly games I've gone to with my professors.

It seemed really odd for people to go all in preflop, I mean... REALLY weird..... and I still don't understand why someone would do that. I can sorta see it if you have pocket Aces but what will you gain... a couple blinds and calls. But these people were going all in with Ace Queen or something... which is a nice hand but fuck that shit the flop is brutal.

Going all-in preflop, early, and at a full table is a bitch move that depends solely on blind luck to win the hand. Like you said, all it takes is that one person to call it with their rockets to beat your A-K, A-Q, QQ, ..,etc.

Using the move heads-up is entirely different however. Good bully move to finish off a person if you have the other player covered in chips and if you're holding a winning hand. If they don't have it, you steal their blinds and ante, If they do, you're top hand has a chance to take them out.

All-in preflop is rarely a good move. Only time it's really good for is if you have a short stack or a small pocket pair. Generally with a small pocket pair and a decent sized stack in early position, it's a hugely -EV move to push all in.

But if you're playing cash games all you have to do is put more money on the table if your stack is short.

Long story short, all-in preflop in cash games is for suckers. In tournament play it becomes a pretty powerful move, especially if you have a powerful stack.

My favorite thing in the world is being the big blind, watching as it goes around and everyone calls with no raise and it gets back to me. I raise everytime if that happens, even if my hand is the shittiest thing ever... just cracks me up.

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
A month or two ago I had pocket jacks and flopped two more. Everyone was playing crazy that night, going all in on all kinds of things, sometimes pre-flop. I slow played good enough that I got two people to go all in on me. The look on their faces, especially the guy that had an ace high full house, was priceless, like a kid being told for the first time there was no Santa Claus. He was just a broken man after that hand and just up and left for home even though it was only 10pm. :lol
