Playing at 40hz is garbage. Who started this shit?

60fps is the only way to go
In AC:Shadows, the difference in how smooth the game runs between Balanced and Performance isn't that big, really. But Balanced has much better draw-distance.

So Balanced > Performance, imo.

Soon Balanced will have RT reflections as well.

40Hz might suck, 40fps/120Hz does not.

This is it. I was realy surprised when I tried 40fps for the first time. As someone with a 3060ti and 3600x this is now becoming my go to for newer single player games that are slower paced, can get that easy with high settings 1440p and get more time out of this setup.

40fps is eyes bleed. Fuck that shit

Even 60 doesn't cut it out for me anymore. Thankfully I play 100+ in almost all games

I was getting around 40-50fps with RT and all that jazz in the AC Shadows benchmark (game was free, I've never spent a dime on any AC game). Playing with fluctuating FPS that low sucks so I locked it to 40fps (120hz monitor, gsync). Fluctuating FPS between say 80-120 is totally fine and smooth.

I played for about 4 or 5 hours at 40hz and it just looked so terrible. The motion clarity is garbage. I'm team green but FSR frame gen can be enabled along with DLSS in AC Shadows. I unlocked my framerate and turned on frame gen. Wow, motion clarity sky rocketed, beautiful game. And honest to God I did not notice any input delay which is insane. Most areas were over 100fps and it felt great (was playing with a wired controller so, kb/m might have been noticeable).

40hz is definitely slightly better than 30 but honestly it's not a big difference at all. You're kidding yourself if you say otherwise.

I see a lot of folks here get excited and praising a 40hz option. Pointless topic I know, but FUCK 40HZ, it sucks dick just like 30.

Have a great Saturday

When your options are limited on console you tend to enjoy the best option a bit more. 40 fps on PC's nowadays is not even worth talking about but on consoles, its still a thing unfortunately.

When you are in your late 40's . Your reaction time, eye to hand coordination and reflexes are schait , compared to young fellas. 40fps is super fast.

40fps is better than 30fps. But it's still shit compared to 60 and the motion clarity isn't good. Both 30 and 40 shouldn't even exist in this day and age. 60 is where it all should start with a potential upgrade to 120 when possible.

The issue is the developers. They push fidelity and later on they start thinking about performance. It should be the other way around. Everything below 60fps should be illegal.

That's also my perception, I don't like 40fps at least on PC, I lock it to 48 in extreme cases but not sure if it looks great because of VRR or because it's 144 / 3

I guess it was fine as an additional option for those who wanted ray tracing and higher Res while giving a smoother frame rate than 30.
I've tried it a couple of times and always go back to 60 on consoles.

OP, your pixel response time is too fast for 40fps. Turn off Overdrive or switch to a display with a slower pixel response time.
Is this actually a thing? Anything under 60fps on my monitor feels like aids, but I do have it on the fastest response time.

60fps bare minimum or avoid
Weird enough, I am getting no motion sickness playing it at 30. 40/60-ish was causing me issues with it. I will continue to play it the way that is working best for me. I don't need the internet cred.

The only answer is "it can be".
It really depends on your baseline. It might not help at all. But if you're playing a 30fps game and your display has a pixel response time that's a bit on the slow side, the appearance of stuttery motion can be reduced.
At 40fps, it might not matter unless you are exceptionally sensitive to low framerates. In any case, I always turn overdrive off if I'm playing a game with a framerate below 60.

40 fps is hardly any better than 30 fps in terms of latency and smoothness, but most people who are after 40 fps modes on consoles want to pair it with VRR support which does help a lot in maintaining frametime consistency and preventing tearing

Obviously 60 fps is vastly superior and should be the baseline framerate target but on consoles we still regularly target 30 fps and that's just how it is with a fixed hardware target

PC gamers of course have no such limitations

I used to be happy with anything over 20 fps in flight sims. I haven't played a console game with a 40 fps mode yet, but I guess it depends on what type of game you're playing.

40fps is a good compromise on consoles (except the ps5 pro I guess). Some games only thing you got to choose from is a “4K” image at 30fps (sometimes with terrible or no motion blur) or 60fps with blurry ass picture quality. Most games I’ve played that offered 40fps on consoles did it well. It’s my preferred way to play say Hogwarts Legacy where 30fps was near unplayable on an OLED and 60fps mode was too much of a hit on foliage and resolution while outside. Wish Square Enix would add 40fps to FF7 Rebirth.

It's a noticeable difference on console compared to 30fps. Offering smoother motion and much lower input latency than 30fps, and at the same time better visuals and, depending on the title, more stable frame rate than 60fps mode. Additionally, PS5 VRR lower bounds is 48fps, so if a game consistently drops below that then 40fps is a better option. Lastly, some displays have 120Hz capability but incompatible VRR/Freesync with PS5 over HDMI, so you can't enable VRR in that case.

P.S.- I don't know the exact reason, but a game like R&C Rift Apart looks better on PS5 in 40fps/120Hz than on a PC using RTSS for 40fps. Smoother output.

Speaking of hz, when it comes to hardware, I am probably looking the most forward to 1000hz monitors.

I mean we were already at the point when one simply can't really notice response time, but it will be great to finally enter the real of CRT level response time "officially".
