I beat ME1 and 2 on 360 and jumped ship on ME3 PS3 when it was made available to PS+ subscribers. After 4 hours, I don't see how my decisions in the previous games would have altered what I've seen in the game so far.
You have to make a certain choice when creating a new Shepard that reflects a decision that you should have taken in ME1. Outside of that, not much.
But I can't be sure until I've beaten the game. So far I'm not regretting leaving my old character.

The longer PS Plus goes on the more inclined I am to get a Vita too (and being honest, a PS4 on launch, despite having so many games to play) - though this batch of games seems to be just PS3 only?

The game is alright at best and certainly not one you want to play if what you're looking for is a pleasant trophy hunt. The campaign has a large number of collectibles that would be highly annoying to track down even with the help of a guide due to constantly respawning enemies everywhere that you have little choice but to engage.

The multiplayer was almost dead when I gave it a shot early last year, after it came out for PS+ in Europe, and its trophies are of the extremely grindy sort.
