What were you doing - staring at walls for hours on end?!

There's 20 - 25 hours in that campaign, tops.

I usually killed everyone. visited every nook and cranny. Tried to find everything and visited many areas twice plus biggest of them all

I died a lot :P LOVED this game so much still do. same thing with zelda tp but without dying part. I rode around so much. fuck skyward sword there was no exploration.

Am I the only one who's not really feeling Demon's Souls?

I know sucking at it and dying a lot probably has a lot to do with it, but I don't know... I appreciate the challenge but this game takes it to a whole new level. With this game is just "what? this whole area from the beggining? Again? Fuck!" I'm also finding the controls unresponsive at times, like my character won't always attack or block when I command him to.

Usually, when I die in a hard game I try to get better until I can get through that part. I have now probably died 15 times just on the first area of the Boletarian Palace and I really don't feel like playing anymore. It's just... I don't know.

Once it clicks... IT CLICKS.

But patience and learning is a cruel mistress in Demons Souls. It's true it may never click with some, but I prefer not to believe that :P

While it spoils the game somewhat, if it's the difference between you getting into it or never, use the Demons Souls wiki http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/

It's not an action game. Attack animations are slow and you can't cancel them afaik. You've got to plan ahead a little bit and watch the enemy animations too. It's why ranged weapons and magic make the game so much easier.

Also, if you get a certain distance you can open up shortcuts in the level.

To be honest I have to agree. I really don't understand why it got so much critical acclaim. You'll see reviews for a lot of games complain about stuff like how they don't have enough checkpoints or they don't explain how things well enough, but when Demon's Souls forces you to repeatedly go through parts you've already done when you die or throws something new at you without really giving much warning it's suddenly a fun challenge and something's wrong with you if you don't like it.

And the attack animations thing... there's just no excuse. People will say that it's slow for a reason and you need to watch carefully (actually after reading the posts above me I think someone just did) but there's another game that is similar without feeling cheap - Monster Hunter. Your attacks are slow as hell if you're using certain weapons like the Great Sword, but you still never feel cheated because you're not mercilessly penalized for losing against tougher enemies and they don't hide other monsters behind random debris to ambush you for the sake of difficulty.

The game also reminds me of Mystery Dungeon and other roguelikes in terms of how it deals with difficulty, but even then Mystery Dungeon games almost always feature randomized levels so you're not doing the exact same thing again each time you die.

what is wrong with bigger games. Games are not like assignments where you need to complete within certain time. Take your time enjoy the journey specially if it is as beautiful as this one. I took 50 hours to finish re4. zelda twilight was 70 + hrs.

Some people just don't have the time and wanted to speed through them.

but I agree that you should just play and enjoy the journey. I was just saying if he has problem playing okami because of the length, then the same pretty much applies to every other video game that's over 20-30hrs long, most games are over 10hrs these days.

Edit: Just finished the Gale Shrine in okami, man the game looks pretty as hell, I love environmental changes and progression in games.

I know this is a bit late to the party as these games have been free since Novemeber, but am the only one who didnt enjoy Retro City Rampage, Mutant Blops or Uncharted Golden Abyss? I was really looking forward to playing them too.
Luckily those games got featured on Playstation Plus as I was planning to waste money on them. Unfortunately they have not been much enjoyable with the most offensive one being Uncharted with its autoplay climbing, generic shooting mechanics and terrible implementation of touch screen controls. Hopefully the other free games are more enjoyable.

Nobody likes Retro City Rampage, but if you don't like the best Vita game ever, Mutant Blobs Attack, I don't know what to tell you.

I found myself not having fun after 3 - 4 levels in. Maybe it gets better so I can always try it again. There was something about it that didn't work out for me and I tend to enjoy indies with some gameplay quirks.

And Uncharted GA is the best game in the series.

If that is the case I wont touch the Uncharted series ever again. I was under the impression that the second game was the best and without those touch screen gimmicks it would be a lot easier to enjoy.

Actually there aren't many out there with the same opinion as mine. lol I've seen some people sharing this opinion here in GAF, but they are rare.

I have some problem with the Uncharted console trilogy, I don't know, I just can't like them they way people like. But Golden Abyss was a fun game to play, and gimmicks aside it had a pretty solid gameplay.

It could be true as I have yet to try the console games. In regards to GA I have become very little tolerant with gimmicks and small distractions to overall gameplay mechanics over the years. I enjoyed the shooting and graphics the most while playing it.
Then again we all have our different opinions but I had hoped that Uncharted would appeal to me.

Luckily PS plus offers a wide arrange of genres so I will likely stumble upon some games to enjoy too. I have yet to play Gravity Daze and I look forward to try Wipeout.

Just finished run of the Cave featuring the Knight, Hillbilly and Twins. A great game and if it wasn't for plus I may not have ever played it. After I finished the last character specific segment the game was really starting to drag for me but luckily it ended before I got completely burned out. Looking forward to doing another playthrough next weekend.

I wish I didn't miss out on free Mutant Blobs. It's one of the Vita games I want most :(

I hope Sound Shapes shows up on Plus soon.

I didn't like Retro City Rampage myself. Mutant Blobs is awesome though. Haven't played Uncharted yet.

This is my third attempt at getting into the game after two experiences much like yours. As someone who despises using guides or external help and believes good game design is explanatory, there is no way to describe From Software's approach towards guiding you through the game as anything other than unnecessarily obtuse, and therein lies the major stumbling block towards enjoying what is otherwise a very lovingly crafted game. Now on my third attempt, after finally having absorbed some of the basics and having picked a more novice-friendly class, I'm 10 hours into it and, well, enjoying it. When someone on this thread described it as an NES-like game, I decided to take the NES approach to it, namely grit my teeth and power on through. There was some frustration. I contemplated giving up. And then, it kind of clicked. I understood what was expected of me. It's a flawed game, without a doubt. People saying "it's fair" have clearly forgotten the myriad of cheap deaths strewn throughout. I still feel the penalty for dying is unfairly harsh and the game would have been better off had it not halved your life in soul form (yes, I'm aware of some spirit trade-offs and the cling ring, it's still ridiculous). But once you accept these flaws you can work through them.

I will say this: the multiplayer component is almost mandatory for the game, not because watching other players die is instructive or having them step into your game to help is particularly necessary (though both of those things are on occasion quite helpful), but because most of the messages strewn through the game have helped me avoid a ton of frustration. What initially seemed to be commentaries on the obvious ("Watch your step" and "My heart is broken" types) turned into genuinely useful messages at some point.

I'm reserving final judgement until I either complete it or decide to quit playing. But I'm still compelled to continue, and that's something.

The only real problem I had with Demon's Souls was that none of the game ever quite lived up to how awesome the Boletaria Castle area was. Man, what I wouldn't give for an entire game in a setting like that, with that kind of atmosphere.

Words of wisdom

I've been playing the game more (no idea why, though) and at this point I'm not sure whether I like it or hate it with a passion. Defeating the Phalanx Demon and getting to the next area was great and made me feel very compelled to keep playing. Then, twenty minutes later I got killed and lost over 4000 souls. It's a like-hate (not love) relationship at this moment. I'll keep playing and hopefully it will get better.

Tower of Latria, was the best area in the game by a mile.

Just tried Lord of the Rings: WITN and The Cave. The former is absolutely freaking horrible. Ten minutes in and I can easily mention ten things that are just stupid. The cave is charming but it's so tedious. You have to go back and forth far too often, and not only as one character, but three. It simply isn't fun.

...just how long has inFamous 2 been on PS+? Has it ever been taken off?

Don't know about US, but that's one of the yearly games in EU.

...just how long has inFamous 2 been on PS+? Has it ever been taken off?

Its one of the 3 titles that have been available since the start of the instant game selection along with LPB2 and R&C All For One (in US). Those 3 slots only change one per year, so it should be taken down sometime in May/June.

Do you think one of the reasons Infamous 2 has been ever present is to fuel excitement for Second Son? As in they planned in since that game was always gonna be around launch time? I wonder then if we'll see more Sony games at the E3 changeover that will get a PS4 sequel soon

Note: Uncharted GA was a trash gimmick of a game. Soured me on the franchise

It's going to be interesting which games are going to replace Infamous 2 and LBP2 since both are rather "big" first party titles. So the replacements have to be the same caliber for staying a whole year on PS+. My guess would be Uncharted 2 and a non-shooter first party game (Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time) or Killzone 2 / 3 and a non-shooter.

I think GOW 3 and All stars and LBP karting are absolute locks.

Haven't people been complaining about fighting games being put up too often?
All Stars looks more like a party game if it's anything like Smash Bros. I haven't played it so I can only comment from videos.

I don't really enjoy fighting games, but it looks like the type of game I'd have fun with friends.

LBP karting would be a great game for me, personally.

I don't think Karting and All-Stars are "good" enough to stay the whole year. The two games are the ones they have to use for the PS+ advertising and are not much of a draw like the other games.
Karting and All-Stars are surely going to come to PS+ but only as monthly titles (my guess).

I think GOW 3 and All stars and LBP karting are absolute locks.

All-Stars and Karting are no-brainers, but I'd be surprised to see GoW3. Yes, I'd expect something more mature than those two, but a hard 18, with a successor already out, and with no DLC to push seems weird. Maybe something third-party, or something like the Ratchet Collection.

On Vita I expect LBP and potentially something like Call of Duty. Maybe Resistance instead, but Sony seems to have a lot of control over Declassified. But that'll be September or something anyway.

Starhawk and Twisted Metal are good possibilities as well.

Starhawk has already been on Plus (or the single player at least), and we're unlikely to see Twisted Metal because a) it's another racing game alongside Karting, b) it's a solid 18-rated game, and c) there's no real fanbase for it outside of the US.

God of War 3 isn't in the PlayStation Store because it's too big. LBP Karting and PS All Stars would be possible.

All Stars and LBPK are pretty much 100% for sure IMO. They're 2 games that are pretty good and have a shit ton of DLC for them.

Also, PSASBR helps to sell other games too, i guess.

Well it is about the same size as Uncharted 3 and they put that game up too.

That is what I was thinking and you know there is going to be more GOW at some stage. Otherwise they'd have to go third party and an Uncharted game would be the obvious choice there.

I wonder if they even bother to remove InFamous 2 and whatnot. It's not like they benefit for doing that at this point anyway. They might just add few games on top of the old ones and be like ''plus just got even better, look at all dese gaems.''
