I thought long about making this thread and ultimately decided to do it because my current contract will run out in two months and I'm seriously conflicted about what to do from there. Smartphones obviously cost alot of money and I don't want to throw it in the wind like I stupidly did so often before so I would like some honest advice about it.
First of all, I currently own a iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3 and I don't want this to become a iOS vs Android thread so I will explain what drove me to iOS in the first place as I used both OSs quite frequently. My "smartphone experience" actually started with a 1st gen iPod Touch which I really liked though later on when I bought my first actual smartphone I decided against a iPhone but rather went with a Telekom G1 with Android 1.5 and honestly I hated everything about it which made me sour about the whole OS. So much actually that I sold the G1 and bought a second hand iPhone 3G which I was happy with in the end.
Now before I go on I feel like I should mention that I'm aware of myself being a really irrational person when it comes to technology. For me GUIs and the visual look of a OS are really important and I love to customize the heck out of my devices and if I can't stand the look of technology I will end up unhappy with it no matter how amazing it is otherwise.
After a while Android matured in that regard and I tried it again with a HTC Desire running a MIUI ROM but even that, something felt off to me and I went back to my iPhone 3G which I eventually exchanged for a iPhone 4 once I could renew my contract which I'm happy with. Well now the obvious answer to me would be "buy a iPhone 5 and be happy!" If it only were that easy for me.
Compared to the iPhone 4 the prices for a 5 are really ridiculous here however I could afford one if I really wanted though my issue lies elsewhere. If I compare iOS with Android for myself in a pure condition I would pick Android in a heartbeat because honestly Android by now does everything I want and but the iPhone has one thing that gets me back, Jailbreaking! Without a Jailbreak I wouldn't even think about a iPhone as the default GUI, while nice, is not my taste though luckily I can easily play around with it thanks to Winterboard, have a polished GUI as a base and don't get overwhelmed with options.
Android on the other hand, I have all the freedom of the world with it and honestly as crazy as it sounds, it drives me nuts the same way Linux drove me nuts on my PC. Yes I can change everything to whatever I want on it but between decompiling APKs and crawling myself through flies, SDKs and whatnot it simply overwhelms me. To put it short I don't like the GUIs on either iOS or the various Android lines, the difference is, with the iPhone I can simply edit a bunch of .png files over Winterboard and get what I want which is the ideal middle-ground between freedom and ease to me.
Soo to get back to my core problem as I feel this post gets long enough already, I currently see myself having three options and I don't know which I should go with.
1: Get a iPhone 5 under a great risk that it comes with iOS 6.1.3 or iOS 6.1.4 out of the box which I can't jailbreak till iOS7 is released which essentially makes it "meh" to me.
2: Take the risk again and try my luck with Android once more. I thought of importing a Xiaomi Mi2 Android phone which comes with MIUI v5 out of the box since I found MIUI to be the most desirable Android spin-off for me yet.
3: Let my contract expire, buy a pre-paid card and stick with my iPhone 4 till I see other options. This proposes a problem in itself as my mother said she would like to have a smartphone once but as she has a pretty hard time with technology she wouldn't like anyone to spend money for a smartphone for her. I really would like to go on from my iPhone 4 so I can gift it to her.
Well what else should I say, both platforms have additional ups and down for me, I see the future of technology in Android, for example whenever I see the Nexus 4 of a friend of mine and also my own Galaxy Tab 2 I'm in awe about the possibilities of Android. But my fickle nature when it comes GUIs really sours it for me as far as mobile-phones go :/ On the other hand iOS has some apps that I seriously would miss and couldn't even rebuy if I wanted like the Secret of Mana remake (yeah yeah I know, SNES emulators on Android ) and the Cave SHUMPs etc. Then again there are also Android devices with hardware I actually want like the Xperia Z...
The TLR version: iOS somehow makes me feel at "home" and cozy when I have a jailbreak while I find Android absolutely amazing but the GUI feels so "cold" and "technological" to me From a objective point of view I like both equally.
But okay if anyone still has the nerve to read my craziness, thank you very much and I honestly would appreciate any opinion.
