Pocketpair and Sony announces a new joint venture company “Palworld Entertainment”

Crazy, MS Gaming just cannot close a deal. Although after what they did to Tango, can you blame Pocketpair for running to Sony?

Nintendo about shut this down or they will have to change up their designs.

I think if Nintendo had a case, they would have sued by now. But... now that a large conglomerate is involved, could it change their calculations on the merits of a lawsuit? I guess we'll see what happens.

Nintendo can go first

I can't believe they would slight Nintendo like this. Sony just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the Japanese public, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase Palworld for either system, nor will they purchase any of Sony's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Sony has alienated an entire market with this move.
Sony, publicly apologize to Nintendo and cancel "Palworld Entertainment" for PS5 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Microsoft cannot offer what Sony offered Pocketpair. Beyond money, Sony has a hand in almost every line of entertainment out there.

Hope it comes out of early access by then.

Tried playing on Xbox but got tired of being booted out the game. And the fps was as Cleveland Brown would say "Turrible"

Right move for Pocketpair. Sony probably smells a Minecraft here.

Microsoft will not jump in till Pocketpair can prove it has the chops. Better to go with Sony and build the game properly.

I think people are confusing this for rights to the game. That's not what this is.

This is a partnership for the general IP separate from the game.

Sony provides the capital and resources to expand the IP, but they don't own the rights to the game. That still belongs to pocketpair.

Yes, although SIE is also involved (through WWS, not just the console side) by contributing Astro Bot to the Palworld PS5 release.

Shit, nope, that was a spoof post.

...Doesn't really matter, not much more than Aloy in Genshin Impact or Fortnite (albeit those are two significant games to guest in,) but it's an interesting turn of events.

Why Sony Music though?
And Aniplex.

It's to capitalise on the IP and expand it in to other areas like merchandise and potentially TV/movies.
Easier way to expand the IP,
For some historical context, SMEJ (a different company to the American SME, btw) had a video game production business since the late 80's, and used to be the partial owner of SCE until 2004; Sony Corp. and SMEJ had each one 50% ownership of the company, though it didn't matter as much since SMEJ was a subsidiary of Sony, anyway.
Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital and director of the Gran Turismo series, even came from SMEJ's gaming division, and GT1 also started development over there.
SMEJ itself doesn't produce any games these days, but that's because Aniplex already covers that business for them, which also has been recently expanding to console development.

Calling it now, SMEJ/aniplex are going to be involved with turning this into an anime, wonder how it pans out for them.

Didn't care for the game myself, but I wonder if it can make an impact/break out.

Ok, sooo...

...the idea behind this in itself isn't bad. In fact, it could potentially be prosperous. Sony do need an entertainment IP that is truly transmedia-friendly across gaming (console, mobile, PC), and other media like anime, film etc.

However, a big part of why Pokemon (and to a lesser extent, IP like Yu-Gi-Oh) are so massive is because they are also very friendly to younger audiences. Pokemon in particular, I'd say its main audience are 8-10 year-old kids. It's extremely kid-friendly. Yu-Gi-Oh's main audience probably skews a bit older, but not by much. Obviously I'm not counting adults with nostalgia and whatnot for these IP because ultimately, they aren't the target audience.

Palworld's big kick is that it's basically violent, edgy Pokemon. If Sony & Pocketpair want it to be as massive as something like Pokemon or even a Yu-Gi-Oh, well first the IP's world and lore need to be substantive on their own terms (not just in terms of being an ironic parody of another IP). But, it'll also probably have to tone down some of the violence so it can skew to a younger audience.

Now, they could make offshoot stuff that's for older audiences, sure. But the mainline stuff, it has to be more kid-friendly. It just has to. Though "kid-friendly" can run a gamut of things; for example in Japan what's good for a kid-friendly anime would probably get that same anime rated TV-PG or even TV-14 if aired unedited in America. That's kind of what watching DBZ in Japanese has felt like to me, for example. Actually, the original Pokemon anime has several things in it that were completely cut out from the American broadcast because they weren't deemed kid-friendly there, but were seen as kid-friendly for Japan.

Sony & PocketPair will probably have to take similar measures with Palworld if they want it to be a major Pokemon-like IP. Even so, they still have other things to worry about, like overzealous use of AI and cleaning up any potential copyright infringement that's already happened with the game so they don't get their asses wrecked in court by Nintendo lawyers.

You're not basing that off a random person on twitter saying that right?

isnt it completely different?

Palworld might be their own 'Pokemon' franchise IP

but the thread you shared is about making a home console
Huh? My thread was about Sony targeting the market left open by Nintendo not having a traditional home console.
