Pocketpair and Sony announces a new joint venture company “Palworld Entertainment”

I can't believe they would slight Nintendo like this. Sony just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the Japanese public, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase Palworld for either system, nor will they purchase any of Sony's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Sony has alienated an entire market with this move.
Sony, publicly apologize to Nintendo and cancel "Palworld Entertainment" for PS5 or you can kiss your business goodbye.
Interesting, could you please explain the issue to someone who's hardly heard of Palworld or what this has to do with Nintendo or their relationship to Sony?

Well, I assumed so, I don't think I understood the tone of your first post. I'm still confused by it tbh.
Sorry, what I meant to say is that MSG is bad at building on established relationships or making 'organic deals.' Palworld on Xbox was a rare example of a hit game that could only be played on PC or Xbox, but they did nothing to capitalize on that. It just feels like another slip up from their management team. ABK is of course a bigger deal, but I don't feel its impact. It's like nothing has changed.

A bit surprised either MS or Sony actually want to be involved with this game. I wonder what the risks are, if any. Even in terms of indirect effects, like for their image. For example, I strongly doubt Nintendo would have stepped in to make a partnership with a game developer that is plagiarizing, and even more than that, transforming an existing Sony/MS game in something sick/unhealthy like this.

I thought this game was dead?

Anyway, I don't think Nintendo have anything to worry about. This will just be another flash in the pan imitation.

Nintendo can go first

Toriyama designs make me feel so nostalgic from the OG Dragon ball series

This is literally about making Anime…Which quite frankly does not need to be kid friendly as a few have suggested not at all. The most popular Anime right now all cater to adults so the market is there.

This literally has nothing to do with PlayStation.
But you dont really think, that Playstation somehow will not profit from this joint venture, do you??

I wouldn't be suprised if the next games or spin offs etc. come to Playstation first or PS is the lead console.

IMO this is one of the first steps from them to capture Palworld as a future exclusive title

For some historical context, SMEJ (a different company to the American SME, btw) had a video game production business since the late 80's, and used to be the partial owner of SCE until 2004; Sony Corp. and SMEJ had each one 50% ownership of the company, though it didn't matter as much since SMEJ was a subsidiary of Sony, anyway.
Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital and director of the Gran Turismo series, even came from SMEJ's gaming division, and GT1 also started development over there.
SMEJ itself doesn't produce any games these days, but that's because Aniplex already covers that business for them, which also has been recently expanding to console development.

Even crazier is that Aniplex's games are multiplatform with Sega publishing the Demon Slayer ones outside of Japan.

But that could be because Shueisha owns the Demon Slayer IP and they mandate it to be multiplat.

I don't think so no. They are very separate entities, just under the same umbrella corporation. In the same way Sony doesn't own the Spider-Man game license just because they have the movie license (the games being PS exclusive happened for other reasons).

Apart from "We are thrilled to announce Palworld will be making it's way to Playstation 5 this fall with the exclusive AstroBot Pal"

Edit: not a Tweet from them

But yeah, OP missed the "Sony Music JP" part in the title

I do believe that was just an unaffiliated Twitter user urging them to announce it. That was not a Tweet from the company.

Yep, my bad, didn't catch the Tweet owner. Edited.

Is this partnership about video games, or expanding the franchise into anime, toys and merchandise?
The latter. But typically this would impact the games as well thru tie-in promotional events etc.

Also a PS5 port is basically guaranteed by this news.

Why Sony Music though?

Because it's where Aniplex is (creators of FGO) and it's mostly for mobile games. There are smart people there, unlike at PS studios.

Its a brilliant move. Moreover, before Mihoyo swallows everyone with their own iteration of Pokemon in a few years.

In a way you gotta give it to Sony though. They really try to be everyhwere in console gaming: marketing deals with the biggest 3rd party IPs (COD, Fortnite, GTA, Fifa etc), timed exclusive deals with IPs that are related to PS the most (like Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, etc), keep opening up or investing in studios in places where gaming is booming like Korea, etc...they have almost all the gasha games out there on their platform, they have studios that work on remasters and remakes of their IPs, studios that work on expensive AAA experiences, other smaller ones that work on AA experiences like Mediamolecule or Team Asobi...were just #1 in the USA for releasing Ghost of Tsushima on PC, are venturing more and more on mobile gaming, their VR2 wasn't really successful but no one can't sat they aren't investing in VR as well.

Meanwhile...how come Microsoft didn't lock anything with an IP that was literally console exclusive to them? This was the one surprise release from this year and they couldn't even handle this one? No wonder they still can't have stuff like Genshin Impact on their platform.

Sony Music is a separate company. Basically four Sony companies are separate entities - that even sued each other in the past. In fact I think even Aniplex had games that did not come to Playstation or something. Sony at its core is a holding company.

What ? Really?
Why would they sue each other.
I thought they all operate under the Sony umberella.

Aniplex is already a multiplatform publisher, doubt it had anything to do with Shueisha regarding the KNY games.

I have to say, the ability of GAFfers to spin this kind of news in a negative against Xbox is actually quite special.

They're entering a joint venture with Sony Music Entertainment you baboons, not SIE. This has nothing to do with Playstation or Xbox.

This is as wrong as saying that XBOX has nothing to do with MS. Sure, they are two different branches of the same holding group.

Before this, there were talks that Palworld would be an XBOX exclusive. Guess what? It won't.

stop right there my chief, but you should acknowledge the discourse around Palworld's peak in popularity, a lot of Xbox influencers and pundits where saying that this was going to be the next MS acquisition, that this was going to sell consoles like crazy; it was heavily associated as an Xbox game.... even Sarah Bond name drop it in the business update.

This joint venture is another example of the laverage and benefits that Sony has over MS.... as and ENTERTAINMENT company.

This looks more to me like they (Palworld) want to expand into Anime/Movie and Manga territory.

Much cheaper right now.

If they try to buy them after Pocketpair has delivered a 1.0 version, it can go way higher.
But they may be a 1 trick pony who will never make another hot ever again while popularity for the game could just vanish overnight. It must have been pretty cheap for such a risk.

Will be a good team to have either way.

Palworld is extremely system driven. You can do a ton of automation.

But there is still not a lot of clarity on how it all works and comes together. When I played it, it wasn't clear what you could and could not do. It was arbitrary.

Any team that can build a game like that would be very valuable I reckon.

I hope that you realize what a stupid argument this is and how little sense it makes. Microsoft as company doesn't offer services services that Sony provides for the purpose of this Joint Venture. To include Microsoft/Xbox is this conversation is as asinine as riduculing Sony for the scenario where their developers use Windows OS to develop games. They're not competitors in the respective domains.

To give another example of how stupid the concern trolling is, by your own logic, you could blast Xbox in a case where Palword devs would want to release a miniseries partnering with Sony Pictures.

I get Microsoft/Xbox being blasted for bad competition, lack of competition, failing in competition with competitors in the same product or service group, but blaming/blasting Microsoft/Xbox for not being the partner of choice of product or service they're not even on the market with is laughable.

It's entirely possible to appreciate the cross media leverages that Sony Group has relative to gaming, without ridiculing a competitor that hasn't because they're not in the same markets.
Sony being good at something doesn't mean another entity has to be bad at something.

From my understanding, Palworld was never an xbox console exclusive. MS just allows early access games in order to pad their catalog whereas Sony doesn't.

I guess all the GAFers who shat on the devs for supposedly ripping of Pokemon do now have to extend their critique to Sony as well as they seem perfectly fine with it. Oh wait..

You gonna be ok bro ?

Good business move to at least attempt to expand this crazy property. 15 million sales on Steam in a month is wild.

Honestly don't think they'll have to rely on AI moving forward with all that cash lol

that's what I said. And that is what these dumb "pundits" keep failing to realize. is not about having all the money in the world or having infinite data centers in order to compete in the entertainment industry.
