Pokémon Reorchestrated: Kanto Symphony now out (iTunes)

Note: Not performed entirely with a real orchestra, but sounds pretty decent anyway. May include some live instrumental pieces however.

I'm not sure how many of you have been following this, but Skotein's Pokémon Reorchestrated: Kanto Symphony album is now available on iTunes. I haven't kept up to date with his project for a while now and randomly decided to look up on it a few moments ago and it turns out the album was actually released today. It's released under the Joypad Records label which tries to make it easier for people to release arranged video game music, so that's cool. Anyway, why not head over to iTunes and his site to have a listen and see if you like it?

Well, that's certainly very high-quality orchestration from what I hear in the youtube preview. Impressive. But this is a soundtrack that I think doesn't really work that will with this aesthetic style. Doesn't really evoke the feeling of the original games for me, but I'm sure many people will enjoy it.

I'm always curious with these sorts of projects; does the artist just hope and pray that they don't get a C&D letter, or do they have something set up with the original copywrite holders?

This is confusing I like it but I dont.

They should have incorporated some 8 bit sounds to bring it all together.

I get what you mean. I enjoy listening to them but they are very different to the actual music in the games, and not just because they're orchestrated. I just try to enjoy the music for what it is.

And they went with a label that apparently sorts out licensing and stuff so they're able to release their music. I'm guessing everything went through fine.

So if I buy from this joypad site can I get both the MP3 and FLAC versions? I don't want to re-encode them for my other devices.

I bought the FLAC version but I want a .mp3 version as well to keep on my iPod. Any way to convert or something? Because it doesn't look like my purchase allows me to get the different versions they offer...which sucks.

You can convert the files utilizing the music player foobar2000 (drop the FLAC files into the program, mark them all, right click -> Convert): http://www.foobar2000.org/

I was going to buy this until I discovered that it's no even played by a real orchestra...
Too bad, this orchestration played by real musicians would have been boss.

I remember him trying to get real people quite a while back but I don't really know what happened about that.

FLAC or WAV?

People in this thread are saying FLAC. I haven't purchased it myself yet so I'm not entirely sure.

Hum I don't know. I never heard of this project before this thread. But in his FAQ he clearly says so:

Do you use a live orchestra to play your music?! It sounds so real!

As much as I want to say, “Oh yeah, I get together with the Goldenrod City Symphony every Monday,” that’s simply not true! I have to rely on some high-end sample libraries to accomplish that big, cinematic sound for my Pokémon arrangements from companies such as Project SAM, audiobro, CineSamples, and Sounds Online. These sample libraries come with pre-recorded articulations of real, live instruments, which I then spend hours meticulously arranging within a sequencer called a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). After slaving over the orchestration and arranging of samples, I then bounce the project as an mp3 audio file.

I have to give the guy some credits though, for a fake orchestra it still sounds really good.

Nah there was definitely at some point a stage where he got some people on board.

Fake edit: Yeah, here

Thanks to hundreds of Pokémon Reorchestrated’s fans, Kanto Symphony will now have enough funding for the live soloists and music software upgrades necessary to make it sound realistic and emotional!

So I guess it's a mixture of live instruments and software, assuming the live instruments part went ahead. But yeah, it's definitely a good orchestra imitation.

I thought everything but Pallet Town sounded great. I just think the vocals were too cheesy, it ruined the feeling the original had. Red's Journey sounded exceptional as well.

I have mad respect for the dude because he clearly knows his stuff and has a talent for arrangement, but...

Do you use a live orchestra to play your music?! It sounds so real!

Noooot really. The horns especially are a one-way ticket to sound library town.

On his website, he has similar work done for every region. Does he plan on making more? Johto Symphony will be the one to look out for.

Isn't the nostalgia the entire point of the album? Or was I missing something on an album that has a track title "Shelf of Memories"...?
Personally, achieving a nostalgia climax doesn't take much more than reminiscing, which this lets me do just fine. I suppose some people need a more... direct approach.

I prefer Pocket Monsters Original Soundtrack Best Vol.1 (which I imported from Japan), but I'm buying this too.

I really hate these faux-orchestra midi samples with obnoxious amounts of reverb, like playing inside a metallic shipping container, and the bass levels get super out of wack in the louder sections. That being said, I can appreciate the arrangements for being what they are. And they are some fairly awesome arrangements. Would love hear this played by a live orchestra.
