They were evolution cards that would have less HP for better effects and occasionally more damage. They never were fully realized and weren't used very often, but the idea is neat and I hope they return someday. Team Plasma cards were somewhat close but it wasn't the same.

thanks, reading that seems that buying a deck it's the way to begin. What's the better deck for a future charizard one? Is there one that contains charmander etc?

Gym Leader's was hype as fuck, I remember seeing them in Beckett and Pojo before they were released in the U.S. and wanting them so bad, one shop at the beach I always went to sold Japanese cards so I got my hands on quite a few of them.
Disappointed they didn't do a Gym Leader's set for each Generation, but I guess Generation I was the most iconic in terms of characters---who'd want a Ramos' Weepinbell, for example?

Japan had the VS set which featured the Johto leaders and future Kanto leaders, but it was just a bunch of basic cards of evolutions with the little face icon of the leader like they did later in Gen 4. Was never really a fan of instant evolutions like that, made the meta really weird when they brought them back.
That set did have the first TM cards, which I really wish they would bring back in some form someday.

I tried getting back into the TCG with the Venusaur EX R&BC set (I stopped collecting after Neo Genesis over a decade ago). My rares were Pinsir and Rapidash. Twice. I have such bad luck I got doubles, defeating all the odds. I've had more luck with the online game, but I'm a collector more than a player so having digital cards isn't so fun.

I wish they would update the controls a little bit on iPad, so that it would be more smooth moving around cards and such. So it would be more swiping than clicking.

Yeah those are the classics, very nice! I once bought two booster boxes of basic for $44 a piece. I wish I would of saved them and kept them sealed lol

I have a first edition base set Blastoise sitting around in a hard sleeve somewhere. I remember it being one of the most expensive cards in the base set back in the day; is it worth anything now or has there been a lot of power creep that made these cards worthless? I don't think I ever played with it (never pulled a Wartortle), but I can't guarantee it's in great condition. I'd take a picture but it's 400 miles away.

I loved the Pokémon TCG and dominated tournaments around the St. Louis area ~15 years ago. It created my addiction to competition which eventually led me to competitive video game tournaments. I kept all my 1000's of cards (most tournaments paid out in more cards like promos or booster packs). I quit when they banned all first generation sets like base, jungle, etc. and the tournament scene died for a bit. I had a really amazing Steelix deck that even dominated most OP first generation decks but sadly never got to use it in competition.

The rise of Sneasel/Slowking certainly didn't help either. Glad that ban came relatively fast, it was getting ridiculous. I never had enough cards to build a competent deck but I used to read the reactions on some site (maybe Pojo?) around that time and everyone seemed pretty upset.
Only CCG/LCG-type games I've played are Magic, Pokemon, Netrunner, and Star Wars LCG, and only Netrunner on a competitive level, but is Pokemon the simplest one by far? Certainly feels like it is, which is not necessarily a bad thing mind you though I do find it slightly annoying how in a lot of cases some cards are just objectively better than others (10 more damage, 1 less cost, whatever) since there doesn't seem to be a ton of room in the game space for subtle balancing.

This is going to sound super crazy, but does anyone have any empty packs that are in good condition? (either opened in the back or on top but looks intact in the front).

Yea I think I played a deck like that before they starting banning older sets and Sneasel himself (but nothing else from his set), here http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Standard_format_(TCG) is when they first started doing that.

Those two definitely have some really good styles, even if they overlap a bit with each other. I've always been a fan of Aya Kusube's stuff, she's been around since the early days but doesn't often contribute consistently, usually coming back for a set or 2 every few years.
Mitsuhiro Arita has been around since Base Set and even worked on Yugioh and I definitely think he's had the most improvement over the past 20 years.

I'm considering getting an elite trainer box but can't decide what set to go for. My initial thought was Generations, but I don't like many of the actual cards in the set that much. The only rares I would have real interest in would be the kanto starters. But Generations comes with by far the coolest sleeves and dice and stuff..hm.
Does anyone here do PSA grading? I'm kinda sorta considering sending some of the rares I've opened since i started buying cards again to get graded.

What's the value/point of the Elite Trainer Boxes? I've seen 'em listed on wholesalegaming.com, but we're still noobs to this whole game
Made a /very/ rough fire deck for my boy based on his pool of cards that we've accumulated from random packs & a box of decks I got off a mate (split between him & my daughter). A local game-shop has been plugging free 'pokemon card game training' on first Saturdays & I'm considering taking them down there for some learning tomorrow & the premise of a free promo. Not sure how well my son's new deck will do, ha. The Girl's got a prebought that's solid enough.

Its a good starting point for new players as it has everything you need. I would only suggest buying them on sale as the recommend retail price is abit more than it should be. The acrylic tokens are great and it comes with a nice hard box to store cards in.
I am going to wait for a sale on the Generations one as it looks sweet.

Yeah! I think the sleeves for the other boxes look kinda bad...but the Generations ones are awesome. Only problem is, like I said, I don't think I like many of the cards in generations all that much.
Edit: I have a Steelix EX and an Yveltal BREAK in TCGO that I probably won't ever use...Don't know if I should do the legwork and try to move them for individual cards I want, or just trade them for packs quickly.
Edit2: Also what's the chat key for TCGO? Can't figure it out!

Question for you guys, my son loves getting cards, but he doesn't want to play 'the official way'. So he doesn't really like those 'energy' cards, he just loves the Pokemon creature cards. Feels like some packs have less or none of the energy cards. Can you guys point me in the right direction?
I really wish the evolutions packs looked like the base, jungle, and fossil sets, with the boxes and pack art .
most booster packs have a negligible number of booster packs. you really only get them from decks and trainer boxes

How come you can't redeem codes?
Mitsuhiro Arita is one of my favourites too. I loved his older work from the sets I grew up with (Fossil set Zapdos immediately comes to mind).
Maybe look into that. Code redemption is a huge part of getting cards easily. I can't imagine trying to play without the feature.
