Think I'm out after Arceus. They've no reason to change the formula of the main series and it'll just be the same exact game they've been making for 26 years.

Give me a new Legends game that adds hundreds of trainer battles to the overworld and we've got a real Pokémon game on our hands.

Pokemon fans: PoKeMoN ShIeLD/SwOrD iS aN OpEn WoRlD

Pokemon Company: Pokemon Scarlet/Violet will be the first open world of the series.

I've seen exactly nobody say this. You should probably stop making shit up to be angry at and using it as a talking point.

pathetic. maybe the next game... :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Seriously even just the sort of "hmm!" "Ahhh!" "Yes" "ohhhh" stuff that you get in BOTW would have been better than nothing. I remember watching a walkthrough of Legends Arceus and being amazed by the complete silence. The (human) NPCs make literally zero noise.

The fact that the Pokemon do make noise makes it even more fucking bizarre.

The fact pokemon still make the same noises they did because it was a fucking Game Boy game when we now have the ability to record and play full voices on our hardware and have an ENTIRE ANIME SERIES WITH POKEMON THAT HAVE ACTUAL VOICES! Still get me.

I mean why would no one want these to be the noises ingame?

Varies by country and often sounds terrible for normal species.

If that trailer and it's typical shitty English anime voice acting is anything to go by, thank the fucking gods these games won't have voice acting.

Seriously, what is it with English anime VAs and their retarded pronunciation and word emphasis? It can't be because it's aimed at children as Thomas the Tank Engine, Postman Pat, Fireman Sam, etc. do it better.

Maybe because I'm British myself, but I absolutely fucking hate the British VA for Xenoblade 2. What an absolute aural car crash that was.

Especially Rex and whoever the Welsh girl was (you can tell I bought it and sold it pretty soon after I realized how bad the VA was...

The English VA in Xenoblade 3 seems to be marginally better but I'm not even risking it at this point, I'll just use the Japanese.

Yeah I get the idea that each Pokemon voice/sound (or multiple variations) takes up file space, but really how much space....?! Here's a back-of-the-napkin calculation.

If we assume PCM audio files (I'm not a game dev, but my spidey sense tells me they don't use mp3 files..?), then even an hour worth of audio only takes up 500mb (at the second best setting x bitrate).

If we assume the entire 915 Pokemon are in the game (even though I don't think they are/will be?), and assign them each 5 seconds of audio (let's say 1.5 seconds per audio variation, then each Pokemon gets three, or take from one give to the other to account for Pokemon with both shorter/simpler sounds and ones with longer ones etc.).... then all in all we get 76 minutes of audio, which equates to about 650mb.

Pokemon Arceus only had 242 Pokemon so that's only about 20 minutes worth of audio, which works out to a measly 173mb. Plus, even if it were an issue of fitting everything into the game cart, they could absolutely just have a free audio file download screen in-game so that players could choose whether or not they want the sounds (99% of them would want the sounds).

So the question is are they doing it because of space or because they simply cannot be fucking bothered (and know it will sell well regardless because Pokemon fans will never complain and vote with their wallets. I'd say it's the latter. It's hilarious that they couldn't even be bothered to at least do proper sounds for the most well-known/famous/popular Pokemon (like Pikachu).

Sure there are a lot of markets (and languages) to cover, but plenty of games just have a select few (one, two, three) languages worth of audio tracks and then lots of subtitles on top of that. It's something plenty of game devs must deal with so Game Freak should not get a pass for it.

Yeah, that's terrible as well. It is pretty anime anyway, so my point applies. Just embarrassing that fellow countrymen voiced it. No better than the American VA shit.

That said, I think a lot of the Japanese VA sounding better is because most people outside Japan do not understand it, or if they do are not used to the types of voices and words/grammar used. It's often still a bit cringey, though nowhere near as much.

Yeah I was thinking the exact same when I finished watching Spy Family (in Japanese because I'm in Japan) and then I went on youtube and saw the English dub of Anya and.......... yeah wow that is not the same at all. They lost what made the (JP) Anya voice (and character) funny (mainly the way she says things and gets things wrong like だいじょうぶます instead of 大丈夫).

Though the issue with almost all anime English VA stuff isn't really the translation (though that often is an issue). It's poor acting in English.

I don't want to get too down on anime VAs, but most of them (not that there are many) suck at expressing emotion... well... normally, let alone well. There's good reason most of them never make it into Western animation productions.

It's not like it's impossible. Look at Avatar. The voice acting in it isn't too bad. The reason is because it's not an anime and they didn't cheap out too much on the VAs.

You're right but at the same time I think I'm used to dodgy voice acting in anime. I couldn't imagine proper serious (English) voice acting in Pokemon for example. I actually prefer the English (maybe because I grew up on English dubbed Pokemon as a child) partly because the Japanese (like all Japanese VA) is far too whiney/screamy.
