Politico: Democrats dread Hillary's book tour

Democratic operatives can’t stand the thought of her picking the scabs of 2016, again — the Bernie Sanders divide, the Jim Comey complaints, the casting blame on Barack Obama for not speaking out more on Russia. Alums of her Brooklyn headquarters who were miserable even when they thought she was winning tend to greet the topic with, “Oh, God,” “I can’t handle it,” and “the final torture.”

But with a new NBC News poll showing her approval rating at 30 percent, the lowest recorded for her, Clinton kicks it off on Tuesday with a signing at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in New York. She’ll keep it going all the way through December, all across the country.

Asked whether she was excited about Clinton’s book tour, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), one of Republicans’ top 2018 targets, responded first with, “Beg your pardon?”

Asked again, she started shaking her head, walking away.

“I’ve always been a looking forward kind of a guy,” said Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), asked the same question on Wednesday. “I think I’ll leave it at that.”

Even elected Republicans say they’ve had enough.

“I look forward to going to every place where she appears,” Sen. John McCain of Arizona said sarcastically.

McCain pointed out that he didn’t write a book after losing the 2008 presidential race.

“I respect and admire and am a friend of Hillary’s,” he said. “But with these kind of things that happen in life, you’ve got to move on. You’ve got to quickly move on.”

Even among some of Clinton's former aides, there's an exhaustion of not wanting to have to defend her anymore. They’ve spent the past two weeks chattering among themselves about the rollout, including frustration over the sheer number of Twitter jokes about Clinton visiting Wisconsin on the tour — something she famously didn't do during the general election.

Republicans and Sanders-aligned Democrats quickly started mocking the high cost of entry to some events — “VIP Platinum” tickets to her Toronto stop, for example, run up to $3,000 and include a meet-and-greet — that reminds them of the paid speech controversy that dogged her throughout the campaign.

Many also believe the party has largely moved on from 2016, and that this is a selfish endeavor more about Clinton’s own feelings than helping the party or country take their next steps. Others worry about the sections on Obama, including Clinton's speculation in the book about what would have happened had the former president done a prime-time address on Russian interference in the election. Clinton also takes a swipe at Joe Biden for criticizing her since the election.

And many current candidates don’t want to be anywhere near her. After the initial book tour schedule was posted last month, one Democratic operative working on 2018 races notified 15 campaign clients that Clinton would be within 500 miles of them, warning them to prepare: "The more the focus is on us, and not Trump, the harder 2018 is going to be."

At least we now know what that Verrit nonsense was all about. It's pretty obvious that the whole thing with Verrit was to prepare in advance for this insane book tour, which is going to run until the end of the year and continue to ensure that the Democratic Party is still distracted with re-litigating the 2016 Presidential primary and general election instead of moving forward with trying to do something about helping the country and stopping Trump.

No one knows what the final endgame for this re-emergence of Hillary Clinton is. If her goal is to prove to the entire world that everything that went wrong in 2016 was the fault of everyone except her, then the much more timely and unbiased Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign already covers exactly just where it was her fault and a new book following more than half a year later trying to claim it was everyone else's fault seems like little more than a self-serving ego trip more than anything else.

The problem now with this completely superfluous book and this pointless tour is that it is threatening to continue bleeding out wounds in the Democratic Party which still haven't healed from 2016 and also creating a completely unnecessary distraction which will only hurt the chances of Democratic candidates who are trying to run for 2018 elections and retake control of any part of the government which is entirely in Republican hands.

She is so selfish to do this now.

Her need for attention is sick.

I used to think along these lines, but it's actually brilliant. These sycophantic Republican assholes can't but help take the bait and attack a politician who isn't running for anything and is effectively irrelevant in electoral politics going forward, just to give the media machine some reliable outrage.

Honestly anyone who gives a shit that she's doing this is pretty pathetic. If she harms anything by having a book tour is because you let it.

Bernie supporters will never let it go, even though they love pretending they want to 'heal now,' OP is a good case study of that

Meh, ignore her. Let the Republicans and other such idiots waste their times focusing on her while we focus on 2018 and 2020.

Pretty much. Everyone else gets to write a book and not be harassed but her

I promise I'll throw as much criticism Bernie's way when he writes his side of the story, which is incorrect btw

Why are the Democrats quoted in the piece and all of the Bernie fans trolling her? Are they taking the bait too?

This is about Clinton's ego, nothing more, and lots of people of all stripes are sick of her.

This shit is normal isn't it? The fact that it's Hillary is what rubs people the wrong way.
.

This tour would've been fine but why she had to smear Bernie, the de facto leader of the DNC? The left truly eats their own.

Just like Hilary supporters will never let go Bernie being in the primary and tarnishing this good woman's name!

Dems in either the Hil or Bern camp are the literal definition of the pot calling the kettle at this point.

If its actually causing issues for Democratic operatives then this isn't a good thing. 2018 needs to be a big turnaround from 2016.

Why is she doing this?

Especially so since the book antagonizes Sanders in such a brazen and open way, and he is still a major part of the Democratic force right now, and antagonizing him will cause rifts among the ranks.

Is it really necessary?

Ah, I guess we've got another "Shut the fuck up bitch and go away" round to look forward to.
Yep. No surprise who made the thread either. I'm sure we can also look forward to he rest of the usual suspects chiming in here too.

Clinton's approval rating she significantly below Trump's; what in the world.
She had the second worst unfavorable ratings of any presidential candidate besides the orange menace iirc. Doesn't surprise me that many hate her after she lost the most important race of her life. The year 2016 will go down in history as one of America's most tragic electoral years for sure.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Why are the Democrats quoted in the piece and all of the Bernie fans trolling her? Are they taking the bait too?

This is about Clinton's ego, nothing more, and lots of people of all stripes are sick of her.

So ignore her. People who hate her seem to focus on her far more than anyone who supported her at this point.

I think I'll go out and protest when her book tour comes to the bookstore across the street from my apartment; what kind of sign should I make? Will Verrit memes still be funny by then, and if so, how do I print one poster-sized?

Except it is absolutely going to hurt Dems in the midterms. She does just need to move the fuck on. She should have never even ran again after 08.

Stoking the fires with anti-Hillary sentiment is exactly what the GOP needs right now.

Hillary has terrible judgment and this is just another example of that. Go the fuck away.

Last I checked posting in threads was not mandatory.....

That said, this book tour will make her some money. Sadly at a cost to the rest of us.

I mean, the main concern of the OP seems to be that this tour will open up old wounds and continue re-litigation, but look at what's already happening. I already got tired of the arguments about a week after Nov. 8th. We have people here that'll square off in a megathread during news about DACA recipients getting screwed over. At some point there has to be some introspection by the ones who choose to keep arguing over last year.
