What are your thoughts on what's going on in the country?

"I think it's really dangerous to answer such important questions that have confounded so many people for hundreds of years, to ask me to give you my solutions, as if I had any, in 30 seconds. So if you want to be specific about a question, I'll be more than happy to answer it because I think race is the elephant in the room in our country. The social situation that we've all experienced is absolutely disgusting in a lot of ways. What's really interesting is the people that jump right away to say, one is attacking the police, or the people that jump on the other side. It's a question where understanding and empathy has to trump, no pun intended, has to trump any quick reactions of an ideological or demagogical nature. It's a topic that can't just be swung at, people have to be very accurate and direct in what they say and do."

Do you support that athletes that are taking stands?

"I absolutely understand why they're doing what they're doing, and I respect their courage for what they've done. The question is whether it will do any good or not because it seems that change really seems to happen through political pressure, no matter how you look at it. Whether it's Dr. [Martin Luther] King getting large groups together and boycotting buses, or what's happened in Carolina with the NBA and other organizations pulling events to make it known what's going on. But I think the important thing that Kaepernick and others have done is to keep it in the conversation. When's the last time you heard the name Michael Brown? With our 24/7 news (cycle), things seem to drift. We're all trying to just exist and survive.

"It's easier for white people because we haven't lived that experience. It's difficult for many white people to understand the day-to-day feeling that many black people have to deal with. It's not just a rogue policeman, or a policeman exerting too much force or power. When we know that most of the police are just trying to do their job, which is very difficult. I'd be scared to death if I was a policeman and I stopped a car. You just don't know what's going to happen. And part of that in our country is exacerbated by the preponderance of guns that other countries don't have to deal with. It gets very complicated.

"At this point, when somebody like Kaepernick brings attention to this, and others who have, it makes people have to face the issue because it's too easy to let it go because it's not their daily experience. If it's not your daily experience, you don't understand it. I didn't talk to my kids about how to act in front of a policeman when you get stopped. I didn't have to do that. All of my black friends have done that. There's something that's wrong about that, and we all know that. What's the solution? Nobody has figured it out. But for sure, the conversation has to stay fresh, it has to stay continuous, it has to be persistent, and we all have a responsibility to make sure that happens in our communities."

Pop has always been very mindful of race and how it affects his team. He sat the Spurs down a couple of years ago during a holiday celebrating indigenous Australians and explained what the holiday meant for Australians (because Patty Mills is Australian).

Pop is a national treasure. Completely nailed it. Displayed the empathy and grace to explain it perfectly. And the NBA has been 1000000% better on these issues than any other league. It's the one league that probably swings more left compared to the NFL/MLB, and I'm not sure on the NHL (though I think it'd be closer the NBA's side of things with all those Canadians).

Very well said, though that shouldn't be surprising for such a brilliant man. I'm not even a Spurs fan, but I can't help but have even more respect for Pop after this.

He's also an Air Force veteran (and rumored former CIA agent lol) so that makes the whole anthem protests disrespecting veterans thing even funnier.

Oh the NBA is much father left than the NFL.

Remember you have to be pretty darn wealthy or near wealthy communities to do as well in football due to equipment and other costs that comes with the desire not to rock the boat and speak up as much. The NBA is more egalitarian in an economic way.

I remember the NBA having a lot of I can't breathe stuff

Glad he's gonna be coaching team USA

Would love to watch a video of Pop and Uncle Joe watching the debates together. That would be true must see TV.

I don't know much personally about Popovich but after hearing him speak in interviews via NBA games (over years) I became a fan pretty quick. The guy seems really smart and well spoken; this really enhances my opinion.

He made a good point about not knowing how to fix everything right here, right now and that keeping a running conversation in both communities and in the news is key to making progress, especially considering how quickly things cycle in and out and how busy our lives are.

Not a fan of the Spurs, but I'll be damned if Pop isn't just the best coach in the NBA but one of the most caring ones too.

Can I get a hand clap! Respect, Pop.

Obviously he's smart but his reputation in NBA interviews is for how little he usually says.

He's famous for his one word answers.

Honestly, that is the one of the most level headed comments I've heard on the issue and topics that correlate with it.

Understandable. It's usually all the media deserves with their repetitive and useless questions, especially when in the middle of the game.

Yep. Pop doesn't suffer fools, he's heard all the cliches before and has a dry sense of humor. If a reporter can get past that and ask a decent question he's one of the most eloquent minds in the game.

Plus, fans left the NBA for 'basketball reasons'. And NFL fans like their heroes quiet with a face mask on.

Yeah, football requires more but the fan base has also 'choose' what they want.

No swag, no celebrations, no face. Just touchdowns.

This kind of awareness of reality is refreshing to see, which is also sad I guess.

Popovich is great. I love some of his coaching videos - which can applied on day to day life stuff, not just basketball.

The NHL isn't even close to the NBA tbh. John Tortorella shortly came out and said that he'd bench anyone for sitting out of the anthem in the World Cup. He lacked any sense of awareness in regards to why the sit out happened in the first place for Colin Kaepernick. Granted, John Tortorella isn't the entire league, but fans are also not as understanding. Hockey is generally a sport where you wear your patriotism on your sleeve and ignore anything else. That and the fact that only affluent people can afford to play it, means that you're dealing with a kind of culture where you're discouraged from expressing yourself, and encouraged to play and follow the code of "right way." As much as I love the sport, it has its problems.

MLB suffers from a similar issue but to a much lesser extent. The issue is generally when players of different ethnicities resort to "egregious" (and I'm being facetious by saying this word) actions like bat flipping, and celebrating, because it represents a drastic shift from the "the right way of playing the game."

As for the topic, love that Popovich knows what he's talking about. More people should try to be as understanding as he is in regards to race issues. It's unfortunate that the majority of people lack awareness in this issue and almost always shift the goalposts to something else.

When you come in expecting a hot take, but now you gotta sit down for church.

Pop is totally awesome! I knew he was a fantastic coach, but didn't know he was also this good of a person. Massive respect to him (well, even more than before!)
