The funny thing is he was walking the line in the middle similarly to what Dabo tried to do, but did it in an actually intelligent, sensitive, insightful way.

The difference in the two takes is stark.

That's a beautiful interview. The Spurs are lucky to have such a great head coach.

Much better take than Mike Ditka's from a few days back.

Pop is a national treasure. Completely nailed it. Displayed the empathy and grace to explain it perfectly. And the NBA has been 1000000% better on these issues than any other league. It's the one league that probably swings more left compared to the NFL/MLB, and I'm not sure on the NHL (though I think it'd be closer the NBA's side of things with all those Canadians).

NHL is firmly conservative.

All this time trying to figure out why Pop wouldn't speak more than 10 words for every question and Duncan had the answer.

Wow, he spoke this much during an interview?

Anyway, spot on.

Prepare for 1 word responses during half time interviews now.....he has spoken more words here than an entire NBA season XD.

But damn, he hit it on the fucking head dead on.....reporter got a lesson right there. Greatest coach in NBA history in my book

Dammit, I'm trying to hate the Spurs over here.

This probably tracks my top 5 things hes done

Took the Spurs as a team to the Holocaust museum.
Toom tame out of NBA finals prep to let Patty Mills discuss the Austrilian holiday mentioned above.
Made assisant coach Mike Brown skip a road trip to spend more time with his kids after a recent divorce.
Held out Tim Duncan from the playoffs after an injury becaise it was the right thing to do.
The laundry list of suppoet he gave Monty Williams after his wifes tragic car accident left him a single dad.
The donation he gave to the Food Bank in San Antonio so they could start a garden.
Donationing enough to the Boys &Girls club here in SA so they could open another chapter.

I love Pop as he embodies many of the reasons why I adore the Spurs organization even as someone who lives in Costa Rica and has never set foot in San Antonio. Not only have they delighted me with basketball greatness during the last 20 years but they have also taught me so many life lessons through moments like these that I have lost count.

That was his off the cuff response? Goddamn.
Let's not pretend he hasn't thought about this, though.

This is a weeks' old phenomenon. He coaches in a sport that's probably 85% black. He resides in Texas. And he's a thoughtful person. Obviously he would get asked eventually.

That's not to say he had a prepared statement of to take anything away from his great answer, but he's had time to formulate his thoughts on the matter.

I've read this about five times now and is about as perfect an answer to these questions as can be given in this type of format. Coach Popovich has always been on point when it comes to societal issues, and as the patriarch of the NBA's coaching fraternity hopefully this sets the standard for how the league approaches this issue all season.

Pop in my opinion is the best coach in the history of the NBA. He make every player turn to strong weapons in the court.
