Love this game, it was probably my favorite game to play as a kid

Also loved this one as well, the original Castle Wolfenstein! Yes kids, this is where it all started!

But if you really want to go real ugly, I think Superman for the Atari 2600 was one of my favorite games as well, ugly, but loved playing it back in the day.

Clock Tower - PS1

I just love the concept of this game! You don't have weapons. You can only defend yourself from Scissorman with objects in the environment and you can hide.
There are some more games in the same vein, Clock tower series, haunting ground, NightCry....

Wish there was more!

I don't find the game to be that ugly, but I really enjoy Space Empires IV and still occasionally play it today even without all of the community mods that used to be hosted for it.

The UI is a bit cluttered, and at first the game can feel a bit overwhelming with colonizing planets, designing and then building ships, designing and building space stations and such. Much the same way that Out of the Park Baseball was the fruit of one man's labor, Space Empires was really driven by one man. Unfortunately, there is a sequel that attempted to bring the game a more modern 3D look, but it killed the franchise pretty hard.

What I really like about this game is the diversity of technologies and space ship designs. There were also some cool mods that turned the game into a Star Trek-based strategy game. Nothing quite compares to a stack of 20 Borg cubes entering your sector on a path for your homeworld!

To name a modern one, Siralim series.

And when I say "ugly", I'm not just saying the graphics look "simplistic" or "outdated". I think the pixel art is just not that good. However, the underlying mechanics in this game are insane, maybe even putting Disgaea to shame. So I don't mind.

The character design. Everything is over designed. Just looks fucking ugly.
To me, the designs are fantastic, but the models themselves (especially the faces) don't do the game justice...very AA compared to the models you see in say...Mortal Kombat 11 which just screams AAA.

I don't think it'd be fair to point fingers at early 3D games, the tech has unavoidably aged poorly. As for modern games I could name a few, but by far the ugliest and bestest is Mount and Blade Warband. Even mods can't make it look halfway decent, but still one of the most original games of its generation.

Honorable mentions go to Dark Souls 2 and The Surge 2, because there are some really good games hidden under all those layers of ugly.

they are not the best looking games but they are far from ugly cmon, the design of some armours\weapons in surge 2 is great if you like scifi.
