I've never seen the thread you speak of.

But c'mon, this can't be misconstrued as anything BUT showing off. You didn't pop in and talk about her and neither did anyone else. You didn't say "hey, I totally dig this girl, we have a great time together, blah blah blah, and hey, here's pic of us or her." You came in, posted a pic, and asked others to do the same. Not of people they care about or girlfriends, but "Asian girlfriends." What, some girlfriends aren't worth seeing or speaking of? It's just sly objectification made obvious by the fact that you don't speak of what she means to you until you're challenged about the thread's merits.

I've dated a number of Asian and Indian girls, but I would never just put up a picture of them on the Internet like this. There's no purpose except for others to ogle and comment on. None whatsoever. And beyond that, I never sat around referring to them as my "Asian girlfriend." They were girlfriends, simple as that. No add-ons, no classifications, nothing else.

And another level that this thread is beyond screwed up, is how Oli jumps in and posts some pic of his girlfriend "pretending" to be Japanese. I mean, c'mon. Not only is it off-topic and more of his attention seeking crap, but it's also stereotypical. Besides which, one definitely has to question why Oli would ever take some of these pics in the first place. "Hey darling, let me get a shot of you face down on a bed of your ass so I can post it repeatedly online." His rep speaks for itself and his responses are pretty indicative of what this thread was obviously going for. Playboy gives more personal information about strange naked women, you guys are just posting pics and giving name and age and claiming them as your "Asian girlfriends." Oh, let's not forget great comments like "I win."

Sorry, this thread is pretty revealing, and I stand by saying it's wrong on a variety of levels.

Baby photos are almost always attached with actual text speaking to how much having a child means to them and how it's such an amazing event in their lives. There is almost always actual substance alongside that. Pets? Well, pets are also emotional attachments and people on this board tend to talk about those quite a bit, and even when they don't, pets aren't going to be offended at being objectified. Fact is, people were just posting pics of "Asian girlfriends" here. There was no discussion of how proud they are to have them in their lives or what they mean to them. Just pictures and some names and ages.

OK, this is getting out of hand.

First of all, Dan is quite correct -- the root motivation for this thread is definitely "look at me." With that being said, GAF is indeed a weird fraternity of sorts where people do ask or share highly personal stuff with a group of near-strangers. That's really a personal decision. Speaking personally, there are some things I've asked here, and a great many more things that I would NEVER share. Still, it is kind of cool that there is some kind of community here...as wacky and dysfunctional as it sometimes is.

Second, you should not be posting someone else's picture without their permission, PERIOD. It doesn't matter if it's your girlfriend or not -- it's a right to privacy issue. If it's OK with her, then I don't necessarily have a problem with it. I definitely agree that it's a strange thing to want to do, though. My girlfriend is a beautiful Chinese/Dutch mix, and there is no way in hell that I'm even asking to show her off on the net.

Finally, I don't quite understand why you are vehemently pushing the "objectification" angle. The definition of objectification is in the intent, and I'm not sure you can prove a case here. Believe it or not, it's perfectly fine to fine the physical aspects of women attractive...as long as that isn't the whole of what you're looking for.

I think all sides have been a little bit right in this discussion...do we need to keep pushing it?

Well, just to try and explain, I think the very usage of "Asian girlfriend" starts by turning them more into objects than real people with feelings and personalities. Following that with simple posts of pictures with no text seems to indicate an inherent "This/she is mine" comment, and of course the "I win [because I have the best one]" line. There's just no attachment of humanity to these pictures, and it's almost actively avoided. They're not displayed as people, but rather things that they have the power to show off. That's sorta my take.

As far as I can tell it's a pic of a Japanese porn actress, and the text makes it look like a joke pic.

To me an over-the-top worship would be if someone was going on and on how cute and nice asian women are, and how all non-asians are more like men in comparison. How they'd take an average looking asian girl over any non-asian, regardless of how she looks. That sort of talk. An unhealthy obsession.

If anything, the vibe I'm getting from some people is that it's strange for a non-asian to like asian girls, and that it has to be some sort of fetish. It's the same thing in the gaming forum; mention that you prefer Japanese games and at least one person will call you a "Japanophile".
