I've worked several Christmas, New Years etc when I first broke into my industry. It definitely sucks, but a lot of job don't expect too much especially if you are just there for coverage. I remember we used to bring in Whiskey and video games on Christmas when I worked nights. It was pretty fun actually.

What sucked was when I was the only one working on New Years eve, so spending that alone and working was definitely a bummer.

wrong. some places you have to work christmas or new year.

alright if you want to fuck around then yes you can choose to work christmas but if you don't you have to work new year.

at my work i know a lot of people who work at christmas. thankfully in my department i don't need to. we get both off but i could be asked ("told") to work if needed as it's a hospital environment. however, should i work it then i will be given an extra holiday to use later in the year (next).

imagine a hospital shutting because it's christmas lol. people would literally die and for many people a hospital ward is their "home" where they need 24/7 care and attention. but sure...everyone go home and open presents.

all during covid i didn't get a single day off. was out working from the start to end.

i actually do get christmas off but essential services need to be running no matter the holiday.

This is essentially why I chose to work on Christmas day this year. I don’t have to choose who to spend the day with, and I can be spared the excess food and drink. I have no issues with my family, but I’ve had enough to eat and drink in the last few weeks anyway.

I used to volunteer to work Christmas because if you are in health care like I was but not in the ER it was a day to get paid double time and a half to do nothing except watch football on your phone. Nobody goes to the clinic on Christmas Day lol

We are lucky at my job since the supervisor takes the whole week off. Today we just made food and played smash bros. We did a tiny bit of work cause it's a public park but it's also Christmas eve.

I have had to work holidays plenty of times when I was among the lower rungs of the seniority ladder, and it was never by choice. Sometimes people are just paying their dues.
