PowerBook and MKDS online

Is it possible for me to connect to Nintendo WFC at my university through my PowerBook (when it's appropriately signed in to the university's servers)? I read on the official site that hotspots with login requirements cannot be accessed by the DS, so I was wondering if my laptop could do the deed for me. I triggered internet sharing on the PowerBook, but don't know what to do next.

That said, someone, anyone, please create a Mac driver for the USB dongle. =(

what you said. you will either need to figure out a way to turn a second wifi connector on your powerbook into an access point or you will need third party drivers for the penisdongle.

short of those two things, no.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I realized I didn't turn on internet sharing after all (gotta press start first).

Unfortunately, right after my DS found my PowerBook as an access point, I got disconnected from the university network. I'm guessing that either the university connection has some type of security that blocks access to this type of stuff, or my airport can't receive a signal from two things at once (which is pretty odd).

Man, someone needs to make drivers ASAP. Kinda like when WarpPipe commenced. :D

You can't be using the same WiFi signal for your Internet connection and connecting your DS to your computer. You either need another WiFi adapter to use soley for your DS or you need to have your Powerbook on wired connection and then you can use the WiFi signal for your DS. I had a hell of a time getting my Xbox working with my powerbook for internet sharing, but it can be done. Good luck.

I have a powerbook as well, why don't you invest in an apple airport express router? I haven't set one up on a college network yet, but I will when I bring my router back with me after thanksgiving. It should work well.

what tagrat said.

you should be able to by a mac capable USB dongle, connect up to your university through that, and then connect to your powerbook through the builtin wifi adapter.

I tried this myself last week. Even with the PB hooked via Ethernet to the office network and Internet Sharing turned on, I couldn't get it to work. The DS would find and connect to the PowerBook's wi-fi, but actually connecting to the servers was impossible. It could have been a simple matter of firewalls, but probably not since I've been able to play online from here by other means -- OS X Internet Sharing is pretty much a jury-rigged cheat and the connection is just too makeshift to support the DS's finicky hardware.

Is internet sharing easy to set up for mariokart? I mean I know how to set up ICS (been a while but...) is there some kind of compatibility list around for which wifi cards will work and whatnot?

Cool... I'll stop by an Apple store today to see my options. Thanks everyone! :D

I've heard that Buffalo (the guys who made the rumordongle) have OS X drivers for a product that's almost identical to the rumordongle. Check that out.

i checked a few weeks ago when the dongle was first announced, buffalo had like nothing recent at all on their site for osx. im sure theres some other dongle available, or pcimcia card at least (if you have the slot).

a super ghetto way would be a wireless ethernet bridge to hook up the powerbooks ethernet to, which would free up the airport to serve up a network for the ds to connect to. but at that point you might as well get a real access point/router.

I tried to do a similar thing as well - plug in via ethernet to the intrarlude and use wifi to connect to the DS and enable Internet Connection sharing. This failed on both my Power Book and my XP box, even though I was able to connect with other computers just fine. I believe even though the DS can detect the shared wifi connection, it is hard coded to connect to an ACCESS POINT rather than an ad-hoc network. I ended up digging up my old Linksys B router and using that to connect just fine. Good luck.

Pardon my relatively little knowledge of this kind of stuff, but isn't Nintendo's USB WiFi dongle effectively ad-hocing as well?
