PREDATOR: BADLANDS Trailer (2025)

Passed your image through chatgpt with other reference shots and the result wasn't too bad 😂

I'm struggling to understand the abject hate for this. It's not even clear what the plot is from what I can tell - is it mainly just the CGI?

My gripe with everything now is it's all just so flat and dull to look at. Most filmmakers have an aversion to contrast, saturation, texture and all but the most basic of framing (not to mention forgoing the classic 1.85:1 AR of the first 3 movies). All while going ham with yellow filters, cyan filters, desaturation and absurdly over the top vignette-blur on their lenses; which looks out of place with the lifeless digital imagery. Top it off with sloppy CGI and I just can't muster up any appreciation for what I'm seeing.

You could even have some great subject matter on the screen but I feel disconnected from it because it feels as if there's a layer of piss and Vaseline between me and everything; like cinematographic brain fog. There's also miniaturisation effect I get now with modern movies: I'm meant to be watching a blockbuster where it feels big and epic, yet there's somehow no sense of weight or scale to it. I can watch Jurassic Park on my 55" TV and the dinosaurs feel massive, but I can go to the cinema to watch a new Kong vs Godzilla movie and they feel about 3 feet tall.

I've come to the conclusion there are probably less than 10 people on this planet who can make digital look really good; and even then it's only when the project suits it, everyone else either sucks at it or isn't even trying. Meanwhile low-mid budget thrillers from the 90s look a million bucks compared to this slop. I'm not an outright film purist, but it's clear that if the budget is reasonable they should be picking up film cameras (it's really not that much more expensive once you're past a certain budget) if they can't bring the lighting, lensing and grading game up to the level we used to see; and perhaps further, given these cameras now are so unforgiving. Film falters more technically at this point, but even when it does it looks better than technically competent digital cinema imagery shot be people who don't seem to care or put in the work.

I know these are different settings and not like for like in a lot of ways, but you can get a general gist for how lifeless this is compared to the original:

Anyone who can't see why this looks utter wank, needs to stop posting

I was thinking about this while doing the dishes - what if that's some kind of Predator/Human hybrid? What if that's the story is his own kind hates him because he's not a pureblood Yautja and he's got to prove himself to avoid being executed? What if the predator being killed in the middle of that trailer is his dad or something?

Not that it's a good place to start, but I could see that being an explanation for why he looks more like a dude and not like Predator.

Looks like they have gender reassignment off-world, who would have thought?

Don't even care its a female predator, it's the utter horrific design of it, same as prey, that was also a insult to the original design and craft of Stan Wilson design.

If you can make it look as good or better than an 80s film, you have to asl yourself, why am I bothering

Ps..no predator design has been able to reproduce the same look as predator 1 and 2, they always get the mouth wrong and build of the predator, they never look as real either.

Prey brought the franchise back from not just extinction, but made a connection back to the original and well away from the later sequels 👍 (predator 2 gets a by, as the second best movie in the series 😎). For what it was, it was a real revival and actually a pretty good movie for what it was

I was hopeful for this movie, doubtful after hearing some of the early story points. But hopeful. After watching that though. I'm gobsmacked that this trailer was approved for release. Let alone the movie green lit !!!!

Really, this is what they have ?? Maybe they are holding a lot back, or are waiting for the sfx to be finished ? (Oh, so naive 😂)

This looks like a you tube fan trailer, in fact that's probably an insult to a lot of them.

This looks like a predator movie. If done by the Paul that makes resident evil movies. In fact swap out Dave Batista and put in a predator and I swear that movie was out at the start of the year 😳😂

Surely there must be something we are missing ? (Some crazy sci-fi mad max angle a real subversion of what people think is happening ?) this just looks like a story ripped straight from the early comics/graphic novels

I would like to be hopeful, but after that. Confidence is weak and spongy

Man, I don't even know which movie the second gif is from, but look at how realistic it looks; look at the contrast and the unique use of color, the shine of humidity on the carapace of the predator, then look at the flat, grey, stiff, boring third gif and you see why people are annoyed with modern sci fi movies.

Why are the predators ever cg in the first place? It looks awful. Can we not do good prosthetics anymore? Is that knowledge lost? Get a seven foot dude in a suit. It looks miles better every time.

Its from Predator 2. That version looked amazing.

It's not just the design IMO. Nobody was as good as Kevin Peter Hall playing Predator. He was not just tall, his movement was so characteristic / believable that we forget that it's just a guy in a suit.
this is true, but even the way the mandibles move looks so realistic.
