This is in no means to demean or talk **** about these bands, just that I, as a very out of touch follower of rock music, only heard of these bands through osmosis.

I know most of the internet hates these guys (especially nickelback, like jesus christ they are the butt of every rock joke) but i guess they were really popular.

and they will probably be played whenever who's someone who wants to nostalgic about the 2000-2012 or so era will think of. at least thats what i think.

not the vocal internet minority who hates them.

do you think there are old people in the 2000s and 1990s who got mad that that led zeppelin and rolling stones and grand funk railroad were played on radios that called themselves "classic rock"?

I've already heard four of those bands being played on classic rock stations (Nickelback, Weezer, U2 and Coldplay).

And is Panic at the Disco even popular enough to be played on radio? Aside from Nine in the Afternoon I have literally never heard another song from them on mainstream radio.

Well, there weren't really "classic" rock stations until fairly recently, actually (I'd say 1990s). They were just "rock" stations. But what with hair metal, then grunge and the nothing that followed it, classic rock became more and more popular. (U2 usually gets played up to Rattle & Hum.)

Lenny Kravitz was the most recent artist my local classic rock station would play.

OTOH, there were "oldies" stations. They used to play 1950s and 1960s stuff. Then 1960s and 1970s. And now it's up to 1970s and 1980s.

I don't think Coldplay/etc will ever show up on classic rock stations, just like Oasis never did, even though Bush got played. It's the sound, not so much the time.

U2's first album came out 35 years ago. Panic at the Disco seems like a weird one to even mention and I doubt they will ever get playtime on a mainstream classic rock station.

Classic equals 20 years after release. The real question is if anyone will want to acknowledge all of those bands existed, and which ones will be willfully forgotten?

And you're forgetting what is destined to be one of the most overplayed classic rock bands in the future - The White Stripes.

If I tune into a Classic Rock station and hear any of this bollocks on the radio, I'll never turn that channel on again... PATD? Nickelback? Get outta here with that crap.

I was going to write off Nickleback, but I remember hearing stained on the classic rock station a few times. Fucking Stained.

How can Seven Nation Army be played more than it already is?

"Classic Rock" is fading away as a radio genre along with the Boomers.
The hip stations call it "Rewind" or "Flashback" or "Throwback" to appease Gen Xers. This allows stations to play Steve Miller Band, along with some Hall & Oates and a little Pearl Jam.

i'm not going to argue with the mainstream long staying popularity of nickleback, thats a given. i don't think i've liked a single song from them (if i've even heard of it) but i bet they will be there.

and i just googled "panic at the disco" and the first few hits were about them making a "reunion" so they're already at the "so far past their prime, they broke up, but we love the shit they did before so its great that they're coming back together again" phase.

music is weird now.

again, i am no way endorsing or hating on these bands, i'm just giving speculation about what i think current pop-culture is.

maybe i'm way out of touch ( which would suck, i'm only 24) or just an idiot about current "rock"

I Write Sins Not Tragedies was played when it first came out didn't it?

I doubt they'll ever make it on Classic Rock radio though.

White men over 30 who don't like country will always need a safe space on the radio where they can hear Led Zeppelin, Skynyrd and the Foo Fighters.

U2 has been on classic rock stations a long time now. I heard Pearl Jam on my local classic rock station back in January and now they regularly play Radiohead and Nirvana.

Yeah, I haven't heard Panic on pop stations here (Western Australia) since they began rebroadcasting I Write Sins, Not Tragedies in anticipation of the next album (~mid-2007).
