problems with Nintendo wi-fi dongle

Got a chance to borrow one this weekend from a friend along with MKDS. So I tried installing the dongle software on three dfferent PCs we have at home, and it works with precisely NONE of them.

Two Winxp PCs - software installs, and then the program instantly crashes a module each time it loads up. On TWO different PCs.
One Windows 2K PC - doesn't even install. 'incompatible operating system' - what the fuck? The dongle doesn't work with Macs or anything else, and it doesn't work with any Windows OS except XP?

Not exactly all-access gaming is this, Nintendo?

Id expect it to Work on win2k and XP. For any other version, I don't believe support is necessary.

Internet-derived fact 2983: Computers, although magical, are simple machines. They only include basic commands such as "run." If a program fails at any point, it must be poorly designed since the computer already covered its responsibilities by running it.

It plainly doesn't work with Windows 2K when the follow error message comes up on trying to install it on my Win 2K machine: "INCOMPATIBLE OPERATING SYSTEM."

Damn, thats such an oversight. Damn you Nintendo, I have an XP though will it work with htat?

I would be all over this dongle if it worked on Macs (for school purposes). Hopefully Nintendo develops and releases a Mac compatible version soon. :(

Really this is what you get for outsourcing but it's not like Nintendo has any other options as the aren't big enough to have their hand in making wi-fi dongles.

That said it will probably be fine for most people and their set-ups. And its better than having no dongle at all. My personal view on having to install additional 3rd party software into any computer is usually a lot of hesitaiton. Very few companies can make really good consumer level apps for a PC. Itunes is one of the few, and even Sony took years to finally get SonicStage working right.

Hopefully they'll add support for other OS's later, but the XP-only thing was already known for a while now and should've been included somewhere on the outside pckaging. Hopefully people will not assume and inform themselves before buying computer-related hardware.

Windows XP has the best USB support of all the windows, so it's likely only 100% supported. Also, the software release that is out right now is for PRESS, and will not be the version on the final retail CD..

Also, did you AT ALL connect your USB dongle BEFORE you opened the software? If you do that, XP will recognize it and install base drivers, that cause an internet connection sharing error upon install -- this is the most common problem.

If you get the dongle, DO NOT CONNECT IT UNTIL THE SOFTWARE SAYS SO.

If you mistakingly do, you have to go into the device manager and remove the drivers manually.l

It's clearly a windows problem, blame microsoft!

In all seriousness though, I don't understand why people are bothering with the dongle, just get a router, it's better long term.

Wouldn't they just need to release a Mac driver and software? All they'd have to do is include in the box a url for where to get it in the future.

Exactly.

But it seems that USB wifi devices aren't that common for Macs. I have a USB Wifi modem that didn't have any drivers for Macs. It was LinkSys, too.

I wonder if it would work under a Windows emulator for Macs...

That's what you get for using a Mac.

*spits in your general direction*

just get ab aiprot express, works perfectly with it.

I had to delete a Network Bridge (which was disabled anyway, I haven't used it in ages), but otherwise the installation went smoothly for me. It did take about ten minutes for the installation program to run, though, and my computer is still relatively fast at around 2 GHz.

It's perfect for those of us who have incompatible wireless routers (the few that there are). I'm not going out and buying a new router just for the DS, when the one I have works perfectly fine with all my other hardware.

Hi. Ignoring the fact that you're using an operating system that, come next year, will be two major revisions behind for just a moment...

http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wc...694&lastAction=ProductDisplay&orderTotal=null

Let's take a look at the system requirements for the dongle:

* PC (The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is not Mac compatible)
* Windows XP
* A high-speed internet connection (such as DSL or cable)
* A Wi-Fi compatible Nintendo DS game
* and, of course, a Nintendo DS.

Now, is it a little silly that there's no Windows 2000 support? Probably, yes. I'm not a programmer, I couldn't begin to tell you why the Buffalo/Nintendo software needs to be XP exclusive. What I do feel comfortable saying is that I'm not terribly surprised, as it's a good bet that largely the only computers left not running XP are a minimal (by Microsoft installed-base standards) amount of home PCs, and corporate-owned machines that weren't upgraded because it was just too expensive.

As for why the XP boxes crashed? Well, welcome to the wonderful world of Windows. I've had Polycom software eat it on my machine because it tried to do something Windows didn't like. A reinstall fixed the problem with, by all accounts, magic.

Just go to www.nintendowifi.com and look at the list of normal wireless routers that are compatible, pick up one of those, and skip the bullshit software.

I love my Mac and airport express router. No need to spend the money for the dongle. I can understand not having a wireless router if you have a desktop, but laptop users should most certainly invest in a Wi-Fi router.

Haha, Nintendo ignoring the Mac market is like the console buying public ignoring Nintendo. :lol

They need all the users they can get.

Specially since after years of polls all tend to lean as the typical Nintendo user being more of a mac lover as well.

strange indeed.

Amen. I mean seriously, why release something that barely anyone uses? It'd be like releasing a bunch of games for the N-Gage or Gizmondo. I'd bet that if you added all the Mac and pre-XP uesers it'd equal like 10% of all computer users.

Yeah, well I'm one of the 10%, and I'm not at all fucking happy.

Nintendo must be retarded, because they're not just closing themselves off to what is a significant section of the market, but aiding Microsoft's monopoly on the desktop and as a result, essentially helping fund the competition.

I was going to buy Mario Kart DS on launch day along with wonderdongle, but unless they support Mac or GNU/Linux, they can stick it.

Haha, wait, why don't you just buy an Airport? It's cheaper and fully compatible. :lol

It's not at all cheaper, at least where I live. It and all the other wireless router solutions are at least twice the price of wonderdongle.

it's called windows emulator.

Yeah, because I'm going to shell out $200 for a Windows license and a copy of VirtualPC. :rolleyes
=P It was going to happen sooner or later so why not now.

When you bought a Mac, somewhere it the fine print you agreed to be screwed with non-existent software support. It's the console of the pc world so cope. One computer future!
