They normally perform better than these consoles and the investment lasts for years. You don't need to buy a pro console upgrade every 3 years and also pay 120 dollars a year to play online and rent free games.

Not entirely true. Almost every recent port I can think of has been a disaster and the only reason some people get a playable game is because they brute-force it with top of the line hardware.

If you can get a 4090 with a ryzen 3d you'll probably be ok, but I doubt most people coming from a console will jump to that class of hardware. As for the longevity.... It depends. If you want to keep playing all the modern games at a decent framerate, I'm already starting to see CPU issues and I have a rather recent 11600.

There are plenty of reasons to go PC, but price and performance are currently not the best ones. Depending on your budget you might have been better off staying with a console.

To be honest I perfectly agree. The thing is they added no value to explain this increase. Big discounts on 1st party games, even on day one, trials versions of 1st party games, more games, full backcompat of PS2 games via streaming etc, anything would do.

But just "today you have this for 119€ a year, for no reason we will now increase the price to 151, and add no value, you're welcome" of course there will be backlash.

If you consider yearly sub though, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is more expensive, if we talk about "official" subbing methods GPU is more expensive : 15€/month *12 = 179€, compared to the 151,99€ of PS+ Premium.

But yeah if you do some kind of manipulation, buying gold cards and coupling them with 1 month of GPU to convert them, etc, you'll get GPU cheaper but for how long ? Soon Gold cards won't be purchasable anymore so this day the only way to sub will be the 15€ monthly sub since MS don't have a yearly sub for this service.

I think it's a different situation. This price increase will make many people actually reevaluate if they need PS+, especially if they play singleplayer games. It doesn't have to be an empty statement or a rash decision you'll regret 5 minutes later.

Seriously considering my next gaming purchase to be a PC for couch play. The consoles (other than the Switch) really are beginning to seem more and more pointless as this generation unfolds.

I just got myself a second rig in a Fractal North case with a 7800x3d...just deciding on GPU. That will sit next to my tv and be a little more portable for my sim rig and Lans if I ever get back to going to them.

Pc is clearly the future. Even Japan is getting on board.

I have in the past, on quite a few occasions.

For example, a lot of Sony’s own first party games require you to complete multiple play throughs for platinum trophies where your progress carries over.

I sometimes would leave the second play-through for a couple of years until my fatigue had worn off.

I see a lot of "I would cancel but I'm stacked." Let me be clear on here, if you're stacked you can still turn off the "auto-renew" and enjoy your stacked years of PS+. Sony can absolutely see how many people turned off auto-renew after this announcement, it could affect decision making, you should do it.

I would argue that even people who intend on keeping PS+ should turn off auto-renew to send a message. You should really only re-up during a sale anyway and there's at least two a year.

The biggest thing right now is that people aren't aware. If you don't follow PlayStation religiously or aren't active on a video game forum, you have no idea this price hike is coming. They're hoping it will auto-renew and people will not even notice, or notice, get mad, and get over it, because what are you going to do, stop play CoD with the boys?

don't worry consoles will go there too. and honestly there's not much wrong with being digital only. anyway, PC is cheaper. if I had an Xbox i'd be paying £70 for the standard Starfield or £100 for premium. I bought Premium for £64 on PC. So any money I'd have got back from selling the game I've already saved.

At least on PC you have multiple stores so there is actual competition and no matter what store you use you don't need to pay for cloud storage, online, crossplay, etc.

i'm not saying PC gamers are "rebels" lol but the PC community definitely puts up with less bullshit. We have standards. Console players are told £70 for a game and you need to sub if you want to play online and they are happy with it. One big reason digital was accepted is due to how Steam Keys in particular (but mostly similar for GoG and say EA Play) can be purchased in multiple stores. Hence you have competition.

This is unlike console digital where games are mostly only available in PSN, Xbox or eShop stores.

Edit: Anyways, I have a sub till end of '24 since I got in on converted PS Now deal, but probably will just convert to Essential afterwards. Kids play some MP stuff on it occasionally.

It makes sense. The growth phase is over and now it is about monetizing the members. The subscription was always secondary to Playstation so as long as they believe the extra profits balance out the membership loss then it is fine. Sony wasn't going for the world domination angle and thus didn't need everyone to subscribe.

If you don't think it is worth it then don't pay, and Sony is fine with that. Playstation is running a gaming platform, not some cloud gaming fantasy.

Different stores as you have dozens of shops selling Steam keys for different prices. Developers can generate keys for free. That's why nobody minds digital with Steam, plus great options for overall platform.

That'll be 7.143.592.651€ for Sony with all people paying the increased price.

If, like you said, 10% of the subscribers drop out and the remaining 90% of the players happily pay the increased price, Sony just gets 6.429.233.385€

7.143.592.651 - 6.429.233.385 = 714,359,266


714,359,266€ is a huge loss if only 10% drop out right now, even if the remaining 90% are still paying. That's more than the cost of a AAA game today.
