PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I always said I would buy a Vita when it hit $100, looks like Sony found my sweet spot with this. I'll likely pick one up when it hits NA. Really smart move from Sony, gets those people who don't like handhelds but want to play the games from it. Also it could convert those people. Once they start playing Vita and PSP games on their home some may go out and get a Vita system to have a portable method of playing the games.

Can't wait to play Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics on my tv.

I really don't know how to feel about this. Seems like it was made to combat the Ouya, but won't it also halt Vita sells? This and a 64 GB Memory Card = the price of only a Vita.

The Vita made most of its profit in the memory cards and software, which this also uses. Since this is pretty much a Vita processor in a box with streaming technology, it saves a ton on the screens, control inputs, and all that nasty stuff. The portable Vita will still serve its purpose, and will probably sell better once this comes out, with more people owning actual Vita software.

I beg to differ. Why would anybody buy this over a PS3? Ridiculous idea. Despite the GAF circlejerking, this is probably going to bomb spectacularly. Sony still doesn't realize that the Vita's biggest problem is its lack of compelling software.

Price?

My first PlayStation?

If it's built into the next Bravia then Sony has penetrated even more.

Not sure who this is for

It really seems like it's for the west. So of course it's launching in Japan first.

I'm somewhat skeptical largely because of the total failure that has followed previous Sony attempts at using Playstation to compete with Apple (does this thing have an IR port? It better be universal remote compatible if it wants to be a serious media box), but the pricing this time is decent and the PS4 Remote Play does potentially make it make sense for a bedroom purchase, even if the Vita aspect never gets used.

I don't think it's an obvious preordained success, but it also doesn't have the PSPGo's obvious doomed-from-the-start aura.

To me it sounds a bit like the games are just an added bonus. Like it's more about streaming movies and tv shows.

Who said anyone would buy this instead of a PS3? It's competing with Ouya / Apple TV, and offering TV-centric gamers a way to play Vita games.

I haven't posted on GAF for a week and won't be posting here for a while. I probably shouldn't even be here now because my intentions aren't all that pure.

First off: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=75509751&postcount=75

The people who gave me shit in that thread can eat it.

Also... I had the PS4 feb title list, the majority of the E3 games for MS and Sony, I was the only leaker that had the PS4 release date not in october. I also had the VR headset and now the bold Vita moves. Y2Kev can vouch that I had them specifically, and he may even admit that he didn't believe me.

Anyway, I'm done. My sister in law was murdered by her husband about two weeks ago and it's making me re-examine my life. I'm not leaving gaf forever (unless this post gets me banned forever)... but I need to get away from the petty squabling. I'm also sick of being the leak guy... and i'm also disgusted with myself that I enjoy being that person. I'm getting attention for shit I didn't do... I just have good friends in good places. That said, verendus sucks - he doesn't give anything specific and has been coasting off of what legit folk like myself have been posting. CBoaT is the greatest internet personality of alltime but he hasn't had a banner year and he clearly isn't a sony insider because it was logistically impossible for the PS4 to come out in October... so he was just repeating industry rumors. Not that I've never been wrong, because I have, and CBoaT is still the king. But I hate that i even care about this shit and compare myself.

I wrote a blog post about it here.

Also... Sony just killed it, again, with a ton of games without having to reveal any of their huge first party games. Anyone doubting this lineup is high. And in a final move of disgusting self promotion, if you haven't heard of NUad you should read this. Microsoft wants you to pay $100 so they can advertise to you... it's well sourced. I couldn't believe how much of this info was out there (though it's all from pre-NSA leaks... MS has STFU about data collecting since then). So check that out if you want to.

Back to my break from GAF. I ain't mad atcha, I just need to not be in threads like this making posts like this. And when I do come back my days of being a leaker are over. I don't want or like the attention.

Damn, man. Hope everything gets better for you.

I still think this thing will bomb at retail. It's not designed to cater to the Japanese market as they prefer handhelds, and that leaves Europe and America. Both markets have proved that the Vita library is not interesting to them, whether it be portable or not. So what then? People will buy because of PSP and PSX games? Well if that were the case the PSP would have done well in itself, which it didn't. And that was a cheap device. So that leaves... Remote play? That is yet unproven, but all signs point to only enthusiasts caring.

Ehhh, but it opens up another very interesting option in being able to play your PS4 on any TV without actually moving the PS4, even to another's house.

Ps4 is small, light, has no power brick. To ensure a lag-free controller experience. Best to just bring the actual box to another's house.

has anyone come up with a good reason for Sony to have left out1080p? Is it just a cost thing? Kinda kills it as a streaming device for me.

:-(

Gimme, this thing looks great.

"In the future, you will be able to use it to stream PS4 games on another television in your house via Remote Play."

Yes, please. So much need for something like this.

It doesn't need to sell like hotcakes at all. It is just another device out there that is better at competing with Apple TV than Microsoft's living room solution and also provides more vita software users to potentially buy games.

Well it is true it is yet to be seen how this would sell, however, it is $100 cheaper than the cheapest PS3 option and plays PSP/Vita games not available on PS3 and becomes a great companion to PS4 owners, and appeals to the Apple TV/Roku market that may also want to play full fledged games.

This device certainly has a market, whether that market will buy it is yet to be seen, but if they do then that answers your compelling software mystery because then developers will begin to see the Vita as a more compelling hardware to develop for. There is certainly compelling hardware on the Vita already that more than justifies the $100 tag, but that is in the eye of the beholder of course.

If I could use my Vita as the "controller" for a Vita TV and play games on the TV that why while keeping full front and rear touch functionality that would be a system seller for me.

Im so intrigued by this, even though Im confused by it still.

I assume amazon prime video will work on it...this..this could be my kids first console and my streaming device.

i need to read about this little bugger

While this may cannibalise sales of the Vita handheld somewhat, let's be real here.

Those who want a portable experience would have bought a Vita anyway. And besides, Vita is still relevant in the core handheld market, aka Japan.

This however, massively expands the reach of the market. Those who want a multi-purpose media box that can also do games, the US/EU/global market that prefers a home-console for gaming vs portables, and the price-conscious Vita potential buyers who had always preferred playing at home to begin with.

However, they'll need to do a very good job with marketing this. It's a potential gamechanger, but it can also sound a bit confusing.

Because it does things the PS3 doesn't and costs half as much.

If it is between a PS3 and this then you probably don't have a PS3 already. That means you probably don't have a DS3 which means it's gonna cost you more than the $99 bones for the base model.

'It's great because it's console-quality gaming in a handheld!'

*revise it into a console*

Ironically there's now even less reason to buy it.

This is genius...

Im a Vita owner and will be a ps4 owner in November and I am still getting this. If this thing takes off, there will be a huge potential user base for developers to make games for.

I would have never thought I'd wake up to this, but it's so goddamn amazing. I don't even think I need it, but I want it. It seems so useful.

With everyone having a smartphone they should have allowed for smartphone integration for the motion control/camera/touch screen games.

Well it's nice to be preemptive towards an inevitable revamp of the Apple TV model, this doesn't really fix the problems that plague the Vita. $150 is not significantly less than the standard portable hardware, it splits the userbase on functionality, and still doesn't necessarily drive more games which is still after almost two years on the market, the biggest problem with the Vita brand.

This opinion is all wrong. You're now predicting this will bomb? Do you have anything coherent to say that discredits this device? You come off quite ignorant by calling this a circle jerk as well. Then you go on to slander the Vita's SW.
