I don't like that Sony internally is confusing these different forms of multiplayer. The ad-hoc/infrastructure distinction was not only infuriating (because online was often missing), but really user-unfriendly too. Who the fuck knows what "infrastructure" means outside an IT department?
Ad-Hoc is still an important feature for a handheld. There are lots of situations where you don't have broadband and might want some multiplayer (backseat of a car, subway, etc). But I'm saying it now: AdHoc-Only does not count. It wasn't acceptable in 2005 and it's just embarrassing now. Adding 3G to the discussion only complicates the issue.
Sony really needed to solve this at the SDK-level. Make wifi-vs-adhoc transparent to the developer.
