PS2 Component Cables... MIA

DaCocoBrova

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Bought a PSTwo on impulse when I learned they had some in stock. I figured I'd snag another set of component cables while I was there, only to hear:

"They have been phased out by Sony and are no longer sold at retail. They went the Nintendo route and sell them direct only."

Damn.

This true?

Even if that were true (and who knows if it is), I'm sure you can find them out and about somewhere...

I tried. That's what prompted this thread. They were never distributed in large quanitities to begin with, as I never saw more than one or two anywhere...

Any 3rd party component cables for the PS2?

I find it odd that w/ the proliferation of HD capable sets and progressive scan playback, that:

Nintendo killed component/progressive compatability in current-spec GCs.
Sony isn't selling the cables at retail anymore (if true)
No 3rd party solutions

I'll check for them. I've only seen the Sony branded component cables.

I have seen new component switchers however, which was something else I found oddly absent from b&m gaming stores.

I ordered the Nintendo ones a couple of months into my GameCube, and got Sony ones directly with my PS2 once I finally caved and bought one (about 2 years ago.) My first Sony ones actually burnt out after a few months, and I wound up picking up a second one about a year and a half ago. They've been going strong since.

I ended up buying the universal mad catz component cables to use for my xbox/ps2. These were tough to find. I think I saw only 2 official PS2 components cables from the stores I was at.

Who cares about the Sony cables, just get the Monster ones, they are almost the same price anyways.

Isn't Monster usually expensive? My Sony Component cables for $14.99 at CompUSA back in oh december of 2002. Around that time. How much is retail on them? I wish Nintendos were easier to find though, sold out at store.nintendo.com and sell for $80-$100 on ebay :-(

Good lord. NoA's not restocking on them anymore?

Yikes, I bought the Sony ones (both sets) for $30 or $35...

The current GC doesn't even support the cables, so I can understand why they did that.

But aren't they keeping a set amount of the old GCNs as stock for those that want to swap out the new non-component GCNs with new component GCNs?

Yeah, but how long do you think that will actually last?

I bought a pair of components for my PS2, but it actually made the images look worse on my HDTV. The aliasing really shows when playing on an HD monitor.

Check the used sections at Gamestop and EB. I found a set of PS2 Monster component cables for $7.99 at GS a few months back.

^Says its Sony's AV cable for PS2, but the picture shows the Official Component Cable:

It's priced at $29.99 which is what the stores sell it for.

The PS2 isn't what one should use to show off their HDTV. However, the right combination of settings on your TV can yield a gorgeous PS2 picture (depending on the game). DNR (digital noise reduction) and turning the sharpness down a bit can make a huge difference.

If you're looking for GC component cables and you can't order from NOA just get some JPN cables. They work just the same.

Also NOA hasn't given up on GC component cables they're backordered, yes but that doesn't mean "never selling again":

The Component Video Cable is currently on back order. We expect to begin shipping again in early March 2005.

They've been backordered before.

I went out shopping tonight at a few stores, looking for, incidentally, the Sony-made S-Video cable for the PS1/2. Found no trace of S-Video cables (dammit, can someone help me out here?) but found several places with multiple Sony component cables in stock, namely Circuit City and Best Buy. I'm here in Ventura County in Southern California. So evidently there still are cables out in the channels, but if what the OP said is true, once those are gone, you're SOL.

Dacoco, Long Island, Bestbuy/Circuit City are your friends if your looking for Sony Brand. Any CC/BB in Brooklyn can get you the Madcatz brand for $5 or less

I've seen the PS2 component cables from Sony at both Frys and Best Buy (in Dallas). They're $30 though, which is a bit too rich for my blood since I figured the improvement in going from S-video to component would be marginal (for PS2).

I'd expect the GC component cables to stay in stock for a good long while. Nintendo is very good about keeping stock in parts for their older systems. Maybe they're selling out so often because people are buying them up to resell on eBay :).

I figure this thread was a good place to ask this - can the PS2 component cable be used with the PS One? I can't find an S-Video cable anywhere for the damn thing, and component is everywhere. I thought that the component cables only worked with the PS2, which is why I even bothered to go the S-Video route...is this true?

I saw the NGC component cables all over the place in Japan. Should have picked one up. I wonder why they never really stocked stores here in the states.

GC components on ebay are selling for upwards of $105 and there are not that many available.
