PS2 Component - Third Party vs Official

You did the right thing. The official one is overpriced. Also did the 3rd party one have composite out for gcon? That thing is good to have if you want to calibrate the gun properly. Of course you can buy the offical composite pass thru accessory, but I think it is expensive.

I own both the Official Sony Component Cable and the Monster Component Cable and the difference is very subtle between them.

Unless you have a larger TV you won't notice much difference. I use the Monster ones because they are excellent for color balance and give a slightly sharper picture.

Plus, I had money to burn. :)

hmm the link I posted directs you to the mainpage of Lik-Sang, just type "component" in search and the first cable you'll see is the one I have

it doesn't have composite.

Well.. I use a LCD Sanyo Z3 projector, it projects the image on a 85" diagonally screen, so it's pretty big.

If you watch a lot of DVD's on your PS2 I'd highly recommend the Monster cables.

Also, I play SOCOM 3 on a daily basis and games like that require a fine picture to pick out details in the foreground (such as concealed enemy players).

Those were my reasons for owning the Monster cables.

so, since I'm playing on a pretty big screen means I'll see graphical differences easier, does this mean it's worth it to buy the Monster Component cable? Or is the difference too small?

The Monster cables definitely make the colors more vivid on my television without any calibration required. Reds (in particular) come out very crisp and not overly saturated.

Text also in particular comes out looking better. Lines are sharpened, however, as a result you see more of the flaws in each game's graphics (even with Progressive scan enabled).

Best advice I can give you is to try them out and if you don't see a difference, return them.

Outside of SOCOM 3, I also noticed a very big difference in Gran Turismo 4 and Metal Gear Solid 3.

Not entirely true. The Xbox HD Component bundle outperforms the Monster cables in my experience and as for GameCube - there is no option but the Nintendo cables... :lol

the problem is.. I live in Belgium, component cables are rare to find. Where in hell can I find those monster cables quickly.

People actually buy special "component cables" instead of just using the composite ones lying around the house? They are both using the same exact connector and both have 3 prongs! Hello~

Oh wait, I forgot that PS2 component cables are built in to the adapter like the newer XBox component kit. Nevermind. :lol

Please use the term "kit" instead of "cables" to avoid misunderstandings in cases like this.

Why, when the PS2 component cable is clearly a cable and not a kit?

The cable is part of the kit, that's why. You can't seperate the cables from the adapter part that goes into back of the PS2, otherwise one could save money and just use a good quality composite cables in place of cables sold exclusively as "component" ones.

I was thinking.. IF I would buy the graphically superiour cable (Monster) I still have to connect it with a regular component (male to male) cable because my psTWO is standing 10 metres (+- 33 feet) from my Projector.. how longer the distance how bigger the loss in graphical quality.

So I wonder: will it be worth it to buy a Monster component cable if I still have to connect it with a second component cable (33 feet long) ?

News flash: all of Monster Cables "video game specific" wires suck. That's right. The Monster component cables for Playstation are terrible. Build quality is an absolute joke and I must wiggle mine to get the picture to display properly and not be missing a color. Picture quality is no different then the Sony ones on my Toshiba 57H84 HDTV. My monster optical PS2 cable broke as well. My Monster Xbox S-Video cables broke. My Xbox Monster optical cable broke as well due to poor build quality. I do not abuse cables and NEVER in my life have I had a cable stop working on me (aside from very very very low end Monster Cables - 1 composite video cables and 1 coaxial has broken on me).

I am not anti-Monster Cable. I am anti - Monster Cable Video Game cables though. I should've listened to everyone who warned me about their sub-par build quality.

I purchased a madcatz PS2+Xbox component cables for 8 bucks and the official one as well. Picture quality is identical. I also purchased Monster cables for the hell of it and picture quality is the same as well.

Erm, I don't think you have any fucking idea what "component" means. Composite cables have ONE cable for video and 2 for audio. Component uses THREE cables for video to seperate the color signals and provide much clearer and defined pictures. I really have n idea wtf you're talking about in your posts. :lol

It's simple little buddy. :) You use the 3 cables in composite which is meant for video and 2 audio channels as 3 video signals of component. And then you use a seperate cable for audio. Smart people who realises there nothing special that distinguishes cables sold as component versus composite ones do this all the time. :D

For instance, when I set up my parent's HDTV and HD digital cable box a while back, I just used a high quality composite cable for the component role (The system I use is red for red, yellow for green, and white for blue), and of course it works flawlessly.

Got it? Good.

I think he's saying that instead of buying special component cables u can use ur spare composite cables as component cables are just 5 composite cables... or something...

Send me one of them Xbox cables. I bought some home-made shits off eBay and the improvement from composite isn't as marked as it is on my PS2. The picture isn't as sharp and the colours definitely aren't as vibrant.

There is more to a cable than the connector type. You cannnot simply use a spare red/white/yellow cable as a component cable and expect it to work (and yes, I have--it didn't).

In reality the PS2 component video is a breakout cable. I would also like to express that the PS2 component cable SUCKS because you cannot split the audio away from the component video. Makes it a real pain in the butt when you want to connect the PS2 to a stereo/surround kit that isn't anywhere near the TV.

=) You can buy it at your local Best Buy, Fry's, or Circuit City. It looks like this. It's becoming a hassle to switch my Xbox and PS2 everytime I want to change systems so I was thinking of just getting another one. I returned the official and Monster cables though. I only purchased Monster because I wanted the best quality shit for my new HDTV but it looked the same so whatever.

I realise that for PS2, you have to go with what they specify since it's part of the kit and can't be seperated, but for regular component cables vs composite ones in the same role, you'll find that it works perfectly.

I've tried using a red/white/yellow combo as a makeshift component cable for a DVD player; it did not work. But, perhaps I needed to use 3 yellow cables instead?

Yeah, I checked out Best Buy's website and it's pretty cheap. Since you're buying another, I guess that means you can't have the cable connected to both systems even if only one of the consoles is in operation? That would've been pretty convenient.

It should work fine. Just make sure you didn't cross any of the colors.

For video u should use 75ohm cables for optimal results. The composite cable's video (yellow) ones are 75ohm, the audio (red & white) are usually 50ohm. So yeah maybe using 3 yellow cables should help.

Hmm... Maybe it's because he is using crappy composite cables. The composite I used was heavy duty job that I had for a while.

The PS2 component cable on lik-sang has seperate audio cables red and white:
