PS2 Optical Out

I know this is super old, but it'll only take a second:

If you have the PS2 set for optical out, will it always use it for all games (i.e., analog out no longer necessary even for stereo)?

I'm sure the answer is yes. Just making sure.

Should work for about all games. I have a couple oddball games that wont work with it, like Parappa 2.

:lol That is why I could never get sound on Parappa 2!!!! :lol

I never realized this! D'oh!

Thank you kindly!

Finally got my home theatre together. Now trying to determine all console hookups. Damn you Nintendo and your lack of digital out...

No it won't. Try playing Initial D. Sega disabled the optical out so people couldn't pirate the soundtrack - they also hard coded the audio mix so the car sounds were much louder than the music. It totally ruined the game for me.

There are other examples, but they are few and far between, basically.

Just a question. Is there any way to attach a pair of Headphones directly to the PS2? There seems to be a drop in quality when i attach them to my TV

Hmm... So it appears that it can depend on the game. No matter, then. If two inputs are used, my receiver will use the digital one over the analog one if there's a digital signal. Otherwise it'll just use the analog one.

Thanks!

Don't feel bad, I went and exchanged it like 3 times before I figured why there was no sound :)

Since the GC can only do Dolby Pro Logic variations it doesn't need digital out. Seeing as though you are hooking stuff up you might want to invest in an A/V switchbox like Zektor or Audio Authority. The cheap and effective way is Pelican Accesories.

Yeah, I know. My complaint is that the GC doesn't support digital audio period.

I got Pelican's System Selector Pro. It's an expensive ($100), but wonderful switch. I can't see any noise or interference introduced by it.

I actually beat the first two songs w/o sound too... :D

Well, even normal stereo sounds much better with PS2's digital out than with analog. Now Gamecube's analog out is probably better than PS2's, but still digital out would be nice.
