PS3 Case Design Speculation

A tough call, but here are some recent examples of designs from Sony's consumer electronics division that could give a hint of what to expect from the PS3's design aesthetic:

DAV-LF1 Home Theater

I don't think they'll even show the design of the PS3 at E3. It's a bit too early. Perhaps at TGS, Sony will reveal it.

What is with the square/rectangle theme? These can't all be the final designs, can they? I like the PS3 fake the most although it seems like the artist just really loved the dreamcast(which is great)

I really hope it's something like that BluRay player or even better that transparent home theater system. Those things are very expensive though.

:lol

all those are official sony designs for other hardware products

They're all products that have shipped within the last 12 months. Expect the square/rectangle theme to continue with PS3.

Well I did realize they were for other products. That's pretty evident, especially with massiveattack naming everthing. So they are final then.

Here's to hoping they won't. Although the DAV-LF1 Home Theater is nice

I'm real dissapointed hearing the rumors out of Sony's presence at E3. I'm just getting "Sony likely will have a few impressive tech demos at E3" and to not expect the console or games or anything. I want a PS3 explosion damn it, right along with Revolution and Xbox 360.

And see how accurate that was. People were still expecting PS1 with a few changes. PS2 actually looked completely different, very sleek too. I expect the same for PS3. A very nice and unique design, better than these concepts. Xbox 360's look actually dissapointed me. Very generic, though I'm really just waiting for the games, so I don't mind.

all the recent Sony units have been BIG. Bigger than the Xbox in fact.
So it'll be interesting to see what happens.
The Bluray drives are enormous

Yeah....all of those designs look way too big. I wonder if Sony will start off with a small design a la PSTwo, or if they'll give us another fat box only to make us salivate at the prospect of a $150 slimline PSThree in the future. :)

As for the Home Theatre thingy....slick-looking, but I don't think it'd work for a console. A similar design aesthetic, sure, but the way it is set up plus the glass/plastic/whatever trim could be a hassle, especially if people try to take their system over to their friends' houses or accidentally pull the console off the shelf.

it'd be hillarious if ps3 resembles xbox1. then it'd be extremely sad because everyone would say how great the design is.

I think its gonna be gray and orange. A medium sade of gray with orange trim.

I don't think PS2 followed the same trend as sony's consumer electronics back then, so there is a chance Ps3 won't either.

There's a way to make a minimalistic box sexy - Xbox1 was not the way to do it - Sony knows how to do it. For that matter, Apple knows how to do it.

if there is a god - and i'm not sure these days - the PS3 -will- look like hot sex and they'll get around the problem by having a wireless controller hub for legacy controllers so you would never be able to dislodge the unit.

being that PS3 and Revolution are not coming out this year, what you're expecting & wanting is a bit too much.

look at Sony's E3 1999 presence with PS2. at that time, the case had not been revealed yet, and not even the official name, other than "Next Generation Playstation". there were the demos that had been shown a few months prior, and I think there was an interactive version of the GT2000 demo. no games playable or even on tape.

This year, it is probably going to be, modest PS3 and Revolution showings, with massive huge Xbox360 explosion everywhere, Zelda, DS and PSP.

E3 2006 will be the big huge PS3 and Revolution explosions with games all over the show floor.

I really don't care what it looks like... as long it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye and Sony continues with the high gloss shinny plastic look :D ie: PSP

And that blue-ray recorder doesn't look all that bad

PSP is not like that though. It has combination of rund and straight lines.

You're right - the PSP was a major break from past Sony designs. The closest thing to it was the Clie which really wasn't very close at all. Anything is possible with PS3 and using PSP as an inspiration would set the world on fire. :)

This might not be completely relevant, but interesting nonetheless.. a little, very reliable birdy has told me that Sony's Tokyo Design Center has already finalized the PS3's design.

Could this mean they'll show it at E3? Or will they keep it under wraps?

He's discovered The Secret Formula™, dispatch the DRE Ninjas!

Unless Sony can make a super tiny PS3 - I expect the obvious Fat Man and Little Boy model to continue, for no other reason than it's an easy way to reinvigorate consumer interest. I'd be pleased if the initial PS3 were Gamecube sized, or there abouts.

I really like compact designs.

It will most likely be unveiled at a special Sony press event in Tokyo or possibly at TGS in September. E3 will be videos only.

PS3 case will be a tissue box with an image of Master Chief on the top, with a piece of turd shaped contraption on MC's face.

And all of you tards would love it.

Out of all the designs in this thread I like the PSX best. Followed by that home theatre thing with the clear plastic border around it - but I'd prefer something that wont show dust and fingerprints.

If only because of colour, I think these may give some cues as to PS3's design/finish.

I expect it'll probably be something totally different, though - the finishes on some of these might be just a little too expensive. That said, PSP is pretty "expensive" looking. I just hope it screams SEX.

the Qualia line isn't a good indicator of what the rest of Sony's other product lines would look like.

Qualia is the top end product line from Sony. I'd almost give my left nut for a Qualia LCD monitor or TV...

I was under the impression that they would be following the PSP timeline. That means showing demo units of the system behind glass with not-real games, tech demos, and movies playing on screens. Then TGS would have the playable stuff.

I really really find it hard to believe that the PS3 won't have a decent presence at E3. I mean the system is possibly coming out before the next E3 and I dunno it's kind lame to have your first big E3 deal AFTER the system is in many people's homes.

True. I wouldn't be expecting a big Revolution "explosion" either. There should be PS3 footage on the showfloor, though.

cynical hat aside, the first machine is big because it has to be. Sony don't make them big for a laugh. Compared to the PSTwo, the PS2 is practically built from cogs and gears.

Costs come down, size comes down. It gets to the point where it'll cost you money to stay with the same design. So you release a small version. Yes, it re-invigorates your brand and market presence, but its also a standard engineering progression.

I hope it does not look like those 1st few images. the 70's really does not need to be brought back again. let it stay dead with disco.

That's HOT.

I'm expecting something along the lines of a slim DVD player, with rounded sides to sort of tie the design to the PSP. Like so:
