PS3 controller a "Conceptual Design"?

TIME TO BACKPEDAL! Conceptual design! 1/3 power Alpha devkits! What else can we backpedal on? :lol

I've mocked it myself, but I'd prefer the bananarang (ie something remotely new) to another Dual Shock.

Welcome Chang3? Asking people to welcome the thing they most fear.

They we're going to add all of Nintendo's controller innovations for the final design. But I guess they're kinda stuck now.

The conceptual design is kind of growing on me. I thought the Xbox Controller S looked bad before I tried it and it became one of my favorite controllers. Same with the original PS1 controller, it looked terrible but turned out to be pretty decent.

The final version should look like this:

Seriously, though. My casual-gaming brother saw PS3 pics yesterday and said he loved the look of both the PS3 and ESPECIALLY the controller.

[shrugs shoulders]

Well, who ever conceptualized that piece of boomerang needs to be fired, or at least enrolled into a decent art school.

If I was a betting man I'd say a lot of things will change with the PS3 hardware before release. They've got an entire year to fuck around with the thing.

All I wanted was the dual shock with slightly longer handles....then they come up with that. Who in the hell told them that looked good? :lol

I think so too. Alot of this could be a smoke screen to get competitors to jump. Especially the freakish amount of ports the PS3 appears to have :lol

I'll worry about the controller when it's been made for people to use. All those official PS3 pics had "specs and design subject to change" or something like that, so it wouldn't be a big shock if that piece of shit got reshaped into something half decent.

no, they don't have an entire year. They have almost maximum 10 months if they're launching late spring, 6~ months if they're launching early spring. (which is probably their launch target, hoping to catch xbox 360 in an after launch drought)

This controller 'looks' better than the Dual Shock.
The Dual Shock needs longer handles - thought I'm not sure if they should be as curvy as these.
The only thing I don't like is the total lack of innovation (e.g. analog triggers) aside from the wireless.

And both the console and controller's original pictures had a 'concept'-type disclaimer. Nothing new here.

Well, even 6 months is a long time to change your controller. Specs not as much, but controller most definiatly.

Sony would be very dumb to ignore what people at e3 are saying about the controller. Its the sign of a bad company if they stick with what they first have.

MS made a huge fudge with the first xbox controller, but I do have to admit it was smarter changing it rather then forcing consumers to stick with what was launched.

I just hope sony has the controller ready for launch, I prefer the system to launch with the final controller if at all possible.

Nice to see them react to the WTF vibe the controller has most certainly given off. :lol

I imagine the final DS3 to look....dum dum dum...just like the DS2 now.

At least it's not running of two cell chips at E3.

Is it backwards compatible?

Does it run at 1080p?

Can I plug it in and use it as my new steering wheel?

No one has printed hands-on impressions with the DS3. They are obviously going for a more ergonomical design, so let's wait for impressions before we call for the designer's head on a platter.

BTW - I'm perfectly willing to fully support a re-design or "S" version if it indeed is uncomfortable to play with, but let's not burn that bridge before we cross it. All I wanted going into E3 was a wireless DS2, slightly bigger, with stiffer sticks.

Just take out the cord, add a USB slot and it's all good.

Oh, and maybe a "Home" button above the select/start and maybe a light informing which numbered controller it is.

.

They would be dumb to change it based on knee jerk reactions from people who haven't even tried it yet.
Though the one obvious functional change they should consider is swapping shoulder buttons with triggers.

Sony should not listen to the complaints since no one has actually held the controller.
(but they should still add GC-style trigger(s))

Yeah, Sony can't handle "teh innov4tion", they should just stick with DS2's design.

*sigh*

They need to copy the 360 controller...

I'm not a big fan of the X360 (mainly on the software side), but one thing MS got right was that fantabulous controller. I wouldn't judge you Sony if you copied it wholesale, I promise!

Have we got any impressions of people who held the controller? I mean, it doesn't look comfortable to me (and it's ugly as well), but I'd really like some impressions first.
