PS3 controller a "Conceptual Design"?

Let's hope it's not another Dual Shock. I'm almost convinced you have to be legally retarded and/or not know anything about video games to like that controller.

Well here's a question.. besides us what was the "on the floor" impression of the controller. What were people AT E3 saying about it?

Pretty much the same thing from what i've gathered on various forums. The press and a few developers seemed unhappy with it. At least from the design side.

Like I was harping on about before E3. If it ain't broke...DON'T FUCKING TRY TO FIX IT. DS2 is perfectly fine the way it is. If nothing else, I'd slap the same, perfect layout on a GC controller, which is probably more ergonomic. But that's about the only thing I'd worry about changing. They really don't even need triggers, that's optional IMO. But the design they showed was worrisome to say the least. I still think it needed to be held by the public/press before totally shelving it, but if they didn't change a damn thing about the DS, I wouldn't shed a tear. Perfection comes in many forms. :) PEACE.

do any of you remember sonys 1st dual analog? it had concave analog sticks and much longer handles- I will post some comparison pics when I get home if I can find that monster in my closet.

:lol The one thing this aborted boomerang has served to do is make Dual Shock 2 look good. :lol

I bet Sony would prefer to stick with the DS design...that lawsuit thing from a couple months ago probably prevents them from doing so. You can still see some of the DS ear marks for Boomerang 3 or whatever they're calling it.

I have seen the conference twice and I saw nor heard no mention of the controller.

Me thinks if it were final, it would have been mentioned.

I don't think they'll do this but I'd like to see some customization features in DS3. Like for example the top shoulder buttons could both be triggers, but you can 'lock' them to be only shoulder buttons. 4 triggers or 4 shoulder buttons or 2 of each. Also, Adjusting the analog stick response strength would also be great. Sony should also add a button that turns the system on/off like the 360 one.

I'm hoping that X360's controllers can somehow work with PS3. They're both USB after all... :/

Sony, hire some guys that can make a good contoller. Stop fucking around!

I like having both analog sticks in a symmetrical layout, and having the dpad in a place where I can use it. Speaking of the dpad, the DS1's dpad sucked but the DS2's dpad is much better.

Either:

A) Sony revealed the most radical (ugliest) DS3 design, fully planning to release a less radical DS3 closer to launch in hopes of softening the blow; or

B) They wanted to see what Revolution's controller would be like, hoping to gain some 'inspiration'; or

C) We're screwed.

Yes that pre-dualshock controler was great except I prefer the dome grips of the DS. Just add wireless and triggers and it would be the perfect controler.

Well, who ever conceptualized that piece of boomerang needs to be fired, or at least enrolled into a decent art school.

Well, just about everyone and their grandmother panned it so thats probably enough punishment for the poor lad. ;)

But yeah, a dual shock with triggers would make this boy grin ear to ear.

Oh, went to EB today to put down a deposit on a 360. Was talking to the manager about the PS3. We then talked about the controller. I told him they should have stuck to the dual shock.

He says they could not do that design anymore due to the Immersion lawsuit about the rumble stuff. <rolleyes>

Now I am wondering if I should have left 50 bucks at EB. :(

Indeed. I can live with the analogues at the current position, but I would RALLY like triggers. They make racers SO much better (I hate playing racers on the DS2). I honestly thought I hated racers for a while since I was playing them on the DS2. I played on on teh Type-S and realized that I didn't hate the genre, I just hated teh controller that I was using to play them. Triggers make THAT much of a difference. The tactile response they provide is essential for racers (not a fan of the wheels, so that's not an option).

Well, I can deal with buttons but triggers would be even better.

Of course, nothing can compete with a Logitech Driving Force Pro. :p

God damn better work with the PS3.

Probably won't though. :(

It's USB right? Don't see why it wouldn't.

You are my hero man. That is the Dual Analog, ladies and gentlemen. Some forget, but Sony had legal problems bringing the Dual-Shock over here. Something about patents...*snicker* ;) I guess it caught up to them in the long run, but anyway, I (like a dumbass) went out and grabbed one of these babies to play with GT1. Oh man, it was heaven. Slightly bigger as you can see, so it was definitely more comfortable. But it didn't vibrate. I then bought a DS shortly after that came out, and liked it. But the Dual Analog is better IMO. If the DS3 looks like that, I won't have a single complaint. It's very comfy, and the analog sticks were definitely better. PEACE.

Button layout might be fucked up though. Button IDs on PC gamepads are a mess.

Qua? He's talking about the PS2's Driving Force Pro, the GT4 wheel.

I liked the Dual Analog pad, too. It's a tad ugly, though. (not that it makes a difference)

i wouldnt mind the boomerang controller as long as they put some better analog sticks. if im gonna have to play games like killzone and i-8 with an inferior style of control for fps, at least give me good analog sticks like on the xbox controller

Just take a normal DS2 (perfect) and replace the vibrating motors with the wi-fi and batteries and there you go....DS3...

It does look very nice. Here's hoping (with triggers, come on Sony! ;)).

They should make an exact replica of the 360 controller sans the X (put a big PS logo in the middle and have it function the same way).

Please, Sony, please, TRIGGERS!!!!

What's so great about triggers?

I love the Dualshock but would like to see some improvements.

I love the analong sticks of the Xbox controllers, maybe Sony can improve the sticks.

The final version should look like this:

Flip the left analog and D-pad, and add 1000% better analog sensitivity and L2/R2 triggers and its PERFECT.

Or just put in out of the box 360 controller support.

One thing I can't believe is how well MS nailed the controller for X360. Going from the Duke (monstrosity) to this (best controller ever) in one gen is absolutely amazing. Major props for them.

Yep definitely take the Dual Analog, stiffen the sticks, add rumble of course and make L1 and R1 triggers and you've got a great controller.

It's cool how all you guys can magically experience the feeling of holding an object just by looking at a picture of said object. Really cool.

I had a really good joke. I clicked Post Reply and then some ho rang me and then i totally forgot what i was going to write. It was really funny. You guys would've liked it. Seriously. No joke.

It does look bad, but

I like some of the ideas.

The clear buttons like on the xbox,

the size looks good, and the design kinda goes with the ps3 unit. other then that, they have to shorten the handles on that thing

Well shit, I don't need to stick my hand in a blender to know it'll be fucking painful.

Take that, rubberise the sticks (like the DS2) and add a cross shaped raise (kinda like the dots on the Xbox controllers, but extended into dashes; so it doesn't connect in the middle). That'll solve the problem of the thumbstick slipping out from under thumbs during intense moments, also solve the problem of the texture wearing away on the concave thumbsticks; you don't need it with the concave and cross.

make it wireless, new piano finish 3 color variations (black, white and silver) and figure a couple of triggers into it, and it'll be a sure winner.

Less bizarre, triggers, more natural thumbstick placement, better looking. This is a sensible decision, backpedaling or no.

And I bet you a banning they change the ports on the "base" machine either immediately or within a year.

Yeah, the Phoenix Revolution pad is cool as hell for that...if Sony goes with a similiar design, I'd like to see them try out this concept. That said, if Phoenix have any brains they would've patented this shit up.

How's it any different to all the console bashing and game judging that goes on here?

:lol Bingo...

Even if they stay with this retarded design, if I can use the 360 pad on the PS3, it's all good.

Concave sticks would be nice, or at the very least have the sticks equipped with more grip. And triggers. For every PS3 controller that doesn't have analog triggers, I will smite the world.

The controller is actually much smaller in real life than what you'd think from pictures. It's not much bigger than DS2 as a matter of fact, just has somewhat longer handles. It appears big in pictures because we all thought the analog sticks are the same size as DS2 sticks, but they are in fact much smaller. The sticker that it's a concept design is indeed there at the display.

Console itself looks absolutely outstanding, btw. It sounds cheezy, but words really don't do it much justice. If you remember how people were trying to explain how good PSP looks, and you could only understand it when you saw it yourself, it's much the same with PS3. It looks like something that is supposed to be very, very expensive.

You know, I wanted the new Sony controller to be different. However NONE of the changes I wanted look to be implemented! I wanted triggers, nope, none to be found. I wanted the left analogue stick to switch places with the d-pad, nope, still in the same place, and I wanted them to shitcan that stupid separated d-pad and replace it with a solid one. Nope, still the crappy separated d-pad.
