PS3 HDD To Be Sold Separately

The issue of whether the PlayStation3 will or will not come with a hard drive as standard has been flip-flopping ever since the console was unveiled at E3 2005. Since then reports that the storage device will be sold separately have been appearing both online and printed press, but official confirmation either way has not been made by Sony.

However, delving into the PlayStation global website and taking a look at the products list has revealed that the next-gen console will arrive sans-HDD, requiring gamers to purchase one separately instead.

It has to be said that the site (which is still copyright dated 2005) could have been displaying the detail for nearly twelve months, but the news comes better late than never.

Thanks to TVG reader Mehul Samani for the heads up.

If this is old, suck it.

what awesome news! I sure believe this random site, thanks. good thing they got the scoop months after everyone else had already overlooked it!

The English language is not your madame and the words are not your prostitutes. You cannot use them any way you wish. "Random" is completely inappropriate in that context.

Personlly, I think the 360 core pack is a great idea for folks that only want to play games. I hope Sony do the same to keep cost down.

I'm sure a HDD-less cheap bluray player will sell shedloads. Where do I sign up?

What about the higher-fidelity video cables? With the memory card alone, you'll be halfway to a Premium Pack.

I have a feeling that PS3's hdmi cables will be extra's anyway.

Anything that can reduce the initial cost of ownership is worthwhile. If you can shave 50 dollars off, then they'll be a lot of parents who might have bulked at a higher cost would pull the trigger on a lower price point. Especially knowing there is a upgrade path.

Eh..this is pretty old. I'm fairly certain that's been on Sony's site for some time now, possibly since E3. I think the problem is there've been somewhat different comments from Sony since then (well at least ranging form it being undecided, to it being unlikely).

'When I use a word,' JackFrost2012 said, in a rather scornful tone,' it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Battersea Power Station, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said JackFrost2012, 'which is to be master - that's all.'

anyway, in an effort to contribute to this train wreck i went to the PlayStation global website and had a look around, could see what the hell this guy was talking about. It does have the PR with the official specs on there from E3 that says "Detachable 2.5" HDD slot x 1" under storage, but we all know thats subject to change and means absolutely nothing.

I wouldn't call this anything official or to take seriously at all.

I still say though that a HDD will not be standard with PS3, thats alot of hoping if you think otherwise. Nothing Sony has said or done up to this point should make you think it would be included.

Its far from confirmed officially, but I would be utterly shocked if it wasn't.

It already has BR+WiFi+ expensive CPU+expensive GPU+tons of input/ouput = not a cheap console to make. They have to be able to keep the price somewhat reasonable.

supposedly if you go to the link above. click on the pop up in the bottom right hand corner and click on "product outline" it brings up the PS3 page. Scroll down and there is says HDD sold seperately

This is true, but it also says due Spring 2006.

And "Design and specifications are subject to change without notice".

I personally doubt there will be a HDD as standard, but until they have the proper unveiling with launch line-up and final hardware it's too early to call anything.

"Detachable" does not necessarily mean "sold separately." Or they could be sold separately only as replacements.

No, the fact it says 'slot x 1' means its sold seperately, but this is all just information as it was announced last year, doesnt mean things havent changed since.

I'll bet a 3-month-ban that it doesn't come with standard HDD. I've already bet a 3-month-ban that it won't be out in Japan in the spring, so this is your chance to get my ass out of here for six months total. :D

If they don't go with the harddrive I really hope they copy MS's scheme. I'm not a fan of the Core pack, but it was a neat little trick. It allowed them to not require the HDD, but made it a very enticing option for consumers. Why buy the Core when you might have to buy a $100 HDD down the line, when you can just pay the $100 now and get the HDD, wireless controller, headset, and AV cables too? Sony should really do something similar, rather than just selling the console for X dollars and the HDD for $100 or whatever. That would guarantee no one would buy the HDD.

The HDD as a seperate purchase would be an even harder sell on the PS3, because it will able to use cheap large flash media. While 360 owners can either go with a HDD or an insanely overpriced 64MB memory card.

X360 needs a HDD because the memory cards are shit, too small and too expensive. Also, you need the HDD for whatever backwards compatibility the 360 has.

It isn't as much of an issue for PS3 since Memory Sticks are much cheaper, and have a useful capacity, and backwards compatibility won't need the HDD.

Now, if Sony changes last minute to 50 dollar memory cards with only 64 MB of capacity, then the outcry should be just as bad as it was for the 360.

I hope you get banned anyway.

I saw the same information posted on Engadget this morning. It's not exactly news really, just someone reading between the lines by looking at the official website. Until Sony says something one way or the other, I'm not going to worry about it too much.

It isn't shipping with standard HDD anyway...it uses 2.5" HDs

Ok so it's a removable drive but nothing indicates if one will be packed with the PS3 at launch or not.

*clap clap clap* Great news!

Other than the bit on the website that says (for the hard of reading who've missed it on the several occasions it's been posted):

Storage media (HDD, "Memory Stick", SD memory card, and CompactFlash) are sold seperately.

So they only just discovered SCEA's PS3 press release from 10 months ago, where it says "HDD drive sold seperately"?

WHAT AN AMAZING FEAT OF JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATION!

Still doesn't mean it's not packed in at launch.
The HDD of the 360 is sold seperately because it's removable (given). And you can buy in packed in. Same can happen with PS3 and it can also happen even if there's only one sku.
