PS3 Home Official Thread

ugh I'm prolly gonna stay away from Home until it evolves and becomes more relevant to games.

Are there any games using Game Launching feature yet?

Seems to be running fine this morning (uK)

Things that bother me :

Having to switch theatre rooms just to watch a different video feed. I should be able to choose want I want to watch from the same screen via a simple menu option, with categories like movie railers, misc, etc etc. Right now it's too much hassle waiting for the loads in between entering and exiting a screening. If it stays like this I wouldn't even consider doing any sort of video streaming via Home. And where the hell are my pause/stop controls? Honestly the whole theatre setup is so terribly designed it's unreal.

In fact fuck all that give me a projector item and screen I can hang in my own personal space so I can watch these feeds without going anywhere.

Secondly is it just me going on about performance? i'm seeing next to no complaints here on the framerate/amount of stuttering. I think it's pretty bad and it's starting to bug the shit out of me. In fairness this could be lag/server related and may pass while the load on the servers are balanced out, but to me it seems to be linked to the amount of HDD access. Any time I enter a new area the framerate really bogs down while everyone's avatar loads up. Once the hDD light stops blinking it does smoothen out but even then just walking around I get frequent stuttering specially during crowded places. And there's no good reason why walking past a stream that's just started should result in a half second stutter. Happens every time. If there's no solution to this i'd rather have some kind of LOD sliders or just choose to see everyone walking around in their initial hologram phase which I think looks pretty cool. (I wish there were more archetypes to choose from, not really digging the 'realistic' look they've gone for)

Thats odd,i have a lousy internet connection of 1MB bandwith and it worked lovely to me.
In fact i was really amazed that i was downloading a Home game (Ice breaker or something like that),downloading an HD video from AND downloading the Mall. ALL AT THE SAME TIME !! while i could read the other users AND the framerate didnt dip.
Kudos to their godlike streaming solution.

Warhawk. I don't know about any others.

Worked like a charm for me. Stuttering was minimal and I think its due to the initial load of avatars when loading an area. The more the avatars, the more of a dip (expected). Once loaded, it was silky smooth for me (US HOME user).

yeah not a smooth experience, I guess it will be addressed through future patches but the engine definitely runs poorly in certain places/situations. shame since this is no Warhawk, just a bunch of people walking in a somewhat small 3D world.

I like it. Then again, I'm not the one that bitches and whines about free stuff.

Since it's region locked, it would be great if they would set up actual playstation store.
Maybe in future.

While sitting outside bowling alley I had a conversation with a guy from my friends list that I never talked with. Really fun how intuitive it is to nod and write. Even with a pad only.
Then it kicked me out. Oh well.

What do you know? I socialised a bit more. :lol

Does the stuff from namco museum beta works only with japanese home? I got few gidts but there is nothing showing in euro HOME.

Besides the first week is always the roughest since every single PS3 user wants to get in.
Yesterday 20 or 30 guys from my PSN friend list were trying to get in.

Excellent idea! This and Sully actually serving drinks in his own bar seals the deal :)

I actually met a few people and made friends with them (never thought i'd do that kind of shit haha :D

Download the Namco Museum Beta from the japanese PStore, launch it with your euro account (XMB) unlock stuff, log inside your euro home (profit!) :)

I can't get chat to work :(

Ok, I paired up the unit using the XMB, and I have voice communication enabled in Home, but I can't seem to talk. I hit L2 and R2 and nothing. Do I have to initialize chat in XMB or something first?

I'm not used to using voicechat on PsN, so help please.

But I did that before downloading the Home.

What should I do? Delete and redownload Namco Museum Beta?

You should be able to buy the drinks and get your avatar more and more buzzed (to a point) which would affect the way it moves and animates...

Oh man! :lol GTA IV style drunken louts would be amazing in that pristine environment!

--

I managed to get on for about half an hour or 40 mins last night... sadly, I wasted a lot of my time with my avatar sitting down while I cooked myself some dinner :lol thats pretty bad really when I see all the people who couldn't get in at all!

A few points of view:

Its nice that Sony think we're all chisel jawed adonises (adoni?) but I was disappointed with the avatar customisation. There is an insane amount of control over the look, you can add imperfections and twists in the nose, ears, wrinkles, freckles, baggy eyes etc -- but I personally couldn't make a face resembling anything like my own. Its over complicated, and it under-delivers. IMO anyway. I much prefer the NXE avatars and Miis.

In Europe there's not much to do / buy yet, but my overall impression is positive. It ran silky smooth for me, despite their clearly being server capacity issues last night, videos played brilliantly (shame most of them were adverts!). Had a look at chess, pool, the arcade games, bowling... thats all pretty cool! I'm looking forward to game spaces appearing on the world map.

At the moment though this seems more like a commercial gimmick designed to sell me on PSP games and virtual furniture.

I have to confess, had there been picture frames and such in stock in the store, I might have paid for a few to display funny pics of my friends in my home space. Is there any PlayStation Eye functionality with this beyond the microphone or is that too risky for a social networking app?

I really like Home. Yeah it's bare bones at the moment but I can see the potential, Decon launched a game of Warhawk earlier, worked ok. I'm interested to see where they go with the whole thing

You have to enable voicechat in the XMB, and you do press R2 to talk. I wondered why no one heard me, until I read the menu.

I actually found Home very interesting because I met someone while playing bowling.

Yeah, we need beards to customize or characters >:(

I tried my best to make myself but he turned out looking like the missing link. :lol

I agree, it is tough to nail facial features just right. I don't really care for the way they have it set at the moment.

I am definitely getting this vibe too but since it's still early; I'll try not to be too critical on my opinion.

I don't quite understand the 'it's free, don't complain' argument. It's been pushed as one of the consoles belated features since its inception.

Maybe when it was first showed, and when the hype was at its peak. I think it has been pretty obvious during the time after that Sony has put it at the back, to try and lower the expectations. I guess they realized early that it wouldn't be something very interesting.

I haven't tried to do the Warhawk game launch. Any reports on game launch functionality. Does it work well? Does it suck?

HOME Thoughts and Suggestions Round 2 ... Fight

- Anyone else found the Far Cry 2 mini game (not sure what its called) confusing? Moving bullets?

- Regarding Gamespaces (US HOME users), I wouldn't have known they are active until I started monkeying with the PDA. If the gamespace is LIVE, it should be advertised on the big screens in Central Plaza with a quick tutorial on how to get there. Not everyone is a going to mess around with the PDA.

- Any timeframes on the EA, Resistance, Warhawk, Siren, and NAMCO gamespaces for US HOME?

- What other games would you like to see spaces for?

- Need more facial feature customizations. People do have full beards :)

- Need to get the trophy room up and running

- Anti gravity room anyone?

- How about a fighting room? Fight Club comes HOME!

- Tetris needs to come HOME!

I spent about an hour with it last night. I.... don't really like it. No matter what I tried, my avatar looked creepy as hell, so I decided to go full tilt and just create the most cracked out looking freak possible. Super skinny, sunken eyes, tiny nose, that weird greasy mullet, two golden earrings and that really faint wispy mustache while wearing the tanktop and baggy pants. It was really quite disturbing when I was done, but it had me and my girlfriend laughing.

So after that I decided to head out the plaza filled with people, listened in to conversations until I found the people spouting the most racist and homophobic rhetoric and then proceeded to follow them around everywhere, never saying anything, just dancing the cabbage patch and the pop and lock, occasionally blowing kisses and making sexually suggestive movements. Needless to say, they started to get a tad angry. The best was at one point some other stranger looking like a fellow crazy crackhead came on and started joining me in on doing the same thing.

Actually, maybe I had a bit of fun after all. Just in no way, shape, or form that Sony probably intended. I kind of want to hop on again tonight to check out the Uncharted space, but at this point the whole thing just seems kind of pointless.

Anyone else NOT able to log in last night? I tried for over an hour, and kept getting some error after the EULA popped up. I was in the closed Beta for a few weeks now, but i guess all of the 200,000 PS3 owners :lol logging in at once overwhelmed the system. :D

Anything fun going on there now? I'm at work so I won't be on until tonight.

Agreed. The closest thing I think I found was a fu-man-chu or something. My character just looks like he's in Snow Patrol or some Brit-rock band. Haha!

Ice Breaker is way too easy. I beat it with 18 spare lives and got 48080 points. Not horrible, but not the most fun either :(

Yes, but you can't use the unlockable arcade cabinets from a non-Japanese PSN account.

People screaming profanity into their mic comes out your TV speakers...

I'm pretty sure that I saw the option to change the voice volume in the menus. It's probably a good idea to turn those down until those people get bored of home - which I imagine will be pretty quick.

What will make Home fun:

Being able to hit each other.

The night before the open beta launched, I was wallglitched off a ledge and just sitting in midair, mostly idling but occasionally answering the people who asked me how I did that ("Incredible balance".)

I wandered off from my PS3 for a little bit, and when I came back, OatmealMu was doing the "ROCK" fist-thrusting dance directly below me. From my perspective, it looked like he was hitting my foot.

But from his persepctive...well, when he claimed I was never going to be able to have children again, I just about fell over.

(Sony said in the past that the avatars are supposed to not be able to touch each other to avoid people molesting each other unwantedly.)

Almost every single Sony published software in portugal is translated/dubbed to portuguese, but Home is in spanish >:(
It's ok. It's not like Portugal even matters... (just kidding, just kidding :D.. btw, I'm from Spain :D!, though living in another country now).

Hmm, so I guess I'm not the only one who was stalked and harassed when playing dress up as a girl. My favorite thing to do is to dress up as a very sexy girl, with the yellowish revealing top and shorts, and no shoes on... sit in the middle of the plaza or on the steps of the mall.

When guys flock around, either flirt and get their hopes up, then change location (ninja vanish), or reply to the guy "I am a Hax0r, I'm invading your PSN account as we speak". :lol
It's funny when they run away.

Question, is there a way to see who on your Friends List is in Home (while you're in there yourself) and find out what location or server they're on? If not, they really need that. It seems that the chances of meeting other GAF'ers or friends here is pretty rare... and makes it all the more pointless when you can't sync up with buddies there.

Went in last night. I can see that it will have funtionality, but its lacking right now. Didn't see any GAF club invite so I just started playing LBP. Sony needs to get the game rooms up. I would love and R2 room and a LBP room. Randomly meeting people who may or may not have the same gaming interests as me isn't my cup o tea. There were a lot of people on last night though.

Everytime I see someone sitting down, I rush them and rave dance in front of their face. Seeing my Mr.Burns-type character dance like that is gold.

What is going on... NXE didn't have my hair, Home doesn't have my hair or facial hair. And there are like five shirts available.

Theres another handful of clothes available free by playing the various minigames.

I think people will expect free clothes to just appear in inventory, and not realize they can earn some.

sack it I've looks can't be arsed.

Would like to see what they've improved from the beta but after updating and deleting the beta it looks like I can't get home.

Even re-downloaded the beta from the download history and tried again.

Restart your console. Icon should pop up above PS Store icon.

nope, just Account management.

  • I'm in the UK.
  • I updated my firmware.
  • I had the old beta so deleted it from that location pressing triangle.
  • Then went to the PlayStation store and not there hmmm..
  • Redownloaded the beta from account history, didn;t work. so deleted it again.
  • No sign of Home

Home really needs some kind of actual loading streaming engine implemented. It feels so awkward when you walk up to a door of the bowling alley, you can see what's inside, but as soon as you step in - 10 seconds of loading. Trailers that need to download fully before they start playing is a complete joke as well. There should be another, faster, running speed as well. I guess this is not much of a problem as you can teleport anywhere, but still it feels sluggish.

That's just on a technical side. It of course needs more content as well, particularly more game spaces and arcade games to play.

I liked the implementation of the voting radio and the flying saucer game with the actual world. They should do more of that kind of thing.
