PS3 Home Official Thread

I just read on the PSforums that you can unlock a "mothership" hat if you get 100% on the first 4 stages. Pretty neat. I wonder if you can unlock a whole outfit. BTW, seems there are 20 stages and the mmost I've seen someone get is to lvl13 which must be really hard. My best was lvl10 and got raped right at the end.(boss fight with 'mothership')

Just checked out the new patch version.

The chat window has gotten a total re haul. So much more convenient now, more text fits and it's overall very smooth to work with (how you can interact/view details of another person by just going through the messages). I haven't seen the friend icons yet as none has been in my vicinity.

Nothing that special, just the smiley face in a square you see when someone logs on.

Really enjoying what Home's brought to the table over the past few months. As an overall entity that costs me nothing to access, it's got more value than many full-priced retail releases that inevitably disappoint.

It's not perfect, they have some videos buffer while others download, every game should be instanced, bubble machines should be removed and the regional focus should be eliminated so it truly becomes a worldwide social gathering instead of the segregated community they have going right now.

But there's also so much it does right.

The minigames have consistently gotten better and more involved, many are now instanced eliminating the need to wait in line to play, some support online multiplayer, and even feature real-time leaderboards for the general public as well as your specific friends and they've figured out how to allow internet access from within the world.

Areas like the Hub have proven they can update a space without forcing you to re-download a new version, rewards from PS3 game trophy progress is becoming more frequent, and Xi has delivered tons of content in a relatively brief period of time.

If you log in once or twice a week, there's easily enough new things to do within Home to literally keep you busy for hours, which like I mentioned earlier, is more than I can say for many full-priced games these days.

They are also doing a nice job of delivering free content to those of us not interested in spending real-world dollars on in-game items, through either promotions, hidden goodies within the world itself, or rewards from the minigames scattered throughout.

Home has performed beyond my expectations, I feel for the people that tried it once when it first came out and tossed it aside in such an incomplete state. But like I said, it's definitely still far from perfect.

They need to address the streaming issues with their video content, for users on a lower-speed DSL, the buffering simply doesn't work, they also need to integrate Home into the XMB, so that it's best features (voice chat anywhere, anytime), game launching, etc. can be accessed from any PS3 title, and just not within the standalone confines of the Home app. They also need to continue speeding up everything, streamlining the interface so it's faster, easier and more convenient to log in and use the software.

But they're definitely on the right track with this thing, just hope it doesn't take years to get it all figured out.

So the third and final Alpha Zone was unlocked today (for Xi) and with it a bunch of new games to play (which are all locked, except for the Maze.) The Maze was pretty cool, you had to use teamwork to get people on switches and stuff. Oh another thing is the Presentation Podium space, I had forgotten how cool it was since I haven't been there in a year or so but it kicks the Central Plaza's ass at being a main meeting place. Some dude did a HD video here if you wanna check it. Link

I really thought the Adventure Lobby text adventure (Alpha Zone 2) was a nice cool touch......really brought back memories.

I really like the quirky-ness of Xi so far......(except for some of the scavenger hunts)

Agree with the post. I'm sure the Home of Q4 '09 is going to look nothing like the Home that 'launched' last year. Every year should bring dramatic improvements to Home. Personally I'm still waiting on personal media in private Home spaces. Don't know why they would've announced something like that over a year ago and had not looked into the legal ramifications of such a system. Also every Sony game should have Home rewards. Only Resident Evil 5 and SF4 unlock Home items. It would be great to decorate the apt with Sony home trophies.

Yeah. My fave puzzle so far. At first I was a little skeptical but I did enjoy the teamwork.

I wonder if XI's gonna end around E3..

I would love to see them add trophies to Home, both virtual representations of trophies earned from your PS3 games, but also trophies earned inside Home itself.

I'd love to earn a gold trophy for all of this Xi work.

I'm still fascinated and want to talk and know more about Home as a whole project because I think it's still too clunky and has too high a barrier of entry (bandwidth requirement) but anyways...

I'm convinced Home will NEVER be non-regional, it will necessarily have to be regional because part of the expected major income revenue expected to keep Home running is advertisements. And ads in North America won't have the same impact as they do in a region say like, Korea. They can try running a system where players share the same gamespace but see different ads but I think it may damage the sense of community and cause some confusion.

Honestly I think the best solution is them devising some "Global" spaces which are not region-restricted and which revenue for can be devised appropriately. For example, these Global spaces can appeal to global brands like Nike, Coca-Cola and more. More importantly Sony can have a direct sales outlet in this Global sales area, be it advertising about products from their other divisions or selling Playstation products (games, Home micro-transaction items etc.).

They should make content releases global though.

For example, home in germany today isn't much different from home when it was first released :(

Really? I thought all Eu countries share one Home server.

Two news bits about Home on Gamesindustry.biz:

Home active users on the rise said:
Peter Edward, director for Sony's PlayStation Home Platform, has told GamesIndustry.biz that the PlayStation 3's virtual world platform has now been downloaded over 6.5 million times, and that after the initial interest peak the active user base has now started to rise again...

..."That's really nice for us, because until that happens, you're hoping that it will happen, but you need the reassurance - so in that sense it's nice."

He added that he was also pleased to see third party support for Home, and hinted that there would be announcements about new additions at E3 next week.

"We've had a couple of client updates with some new features, we've got a few more features coming along soon," he said.

Profit not "driving force" for Home right now said:
Peter Edward, director of the PlayStation Home Platform Group, who told GamesIndustry.biz he believed that monetisation of the PlayStation 3's virtual world environment would happen as a consequence of fulfilling the top two priorities.

"On the one hand, yes - Home is an ambitious platform and has been in development for some time, so obviously that's a lot of money," he explained, ahead of a speaking engagement at GameHorizon next month. "But it is a platform, it's not a single software product. We do have a profit and loss on Home, and obviously revenue is an important part of it, just like with anything else.

"But our belief is that if you make the community happy, and get good content on to the platform, if you get a platform that people want to keep coming back to, then the monetisation aspect of it will almost take care of itself.

"It's certainly not something that should be the driving force, not something that's the driving priority at this stage of development. We have to focus on making sure we're giving the community what they want, and making sure the platform itself is sufficiently capable and robust, and that the content is there. That's definitely our priority...

...he did reveal that the micro-transaction model is proving effective, particularly for third parties who create that monetised content, with the recent release of Star Trek uniforms proving a notable attraction.

"From a third party's perspective it makes it worthwhile to produce those items in the first place," he said. "I can't give you any specific figures on how much has been sold - that's obviously a matter for our licensees - but there are plenty of items being made that are making money.

"I think there's enough content being given away for free on the Home platform that people don't feel forced into buying stuff, and the fact that they are buying things shows there's a market for it and that people like it.

"What's really interesting is that in some cases we're actually finding that the paid-for items are shifting more than the free items, and what that points to is that there's a value in the perceived exclusivity of an item - users can say they've paid for it and it gives them the opportunity to show their individuality a little more."

Paid items shift more than free items mostly because more effort is put into their production. I worked for an online game where micro-transactions for clothings was the primary revenue stream so I'm not talking out of my ass.. :lol We'd also make sure the better looking clothes were higher priced.

Haven't been on in a while... just wondering if the various updates have fixed the generally shit framerate and stuttering while things loaded up?

Sidenote: I love the EU Home Central and quite prefer it over the US/Japan one. It's not as big as either but it's just the right size and performance is quite better.

Another sidenote: Home development is divided into: Home platform group, SCEE/SCEA/SCEJ content groups (and then third party). SCEE content group and Home platform group are divided entities despite both being Europe based.

It doesn't have to be that difficult. The Home spaces with advertisements always come through a screen, whether it's for video or a billboard. All that needs to be done is check the user's location before loading up the content, and then load the appropriate region specific ads for that client. So the EU guy sees Fanta while the US guy sees Mountain Dew on the same billboard.

I can't wait to see what HOME looks like when monitization is their focus. :lol

Reading these articles makes me happy in that Home is continuing to grow/evolve and not just die on the vine. I never thought it would be some people certainly did, I still remember the 1UP guys saying 'Sony won't have a choice but to shut fown HOME in 6 months' back when it first came out. :lol

They need to push hard to standardize features though. Make Game Launchign support a requirement for all upcoming games. It's really mind boggling that they haven't made that a standard, I wonder if it's actually difficult to implement? Home would suddenly get so much more 'content' if game launching was Universal.

Also has home been laoding new spaces much faster for anyone else since they started pre caching data?

Great news BUZZ! fans!

We’re going to launch a brand new space in PlayStation Home called BUZZ! HQ, where players can chat and meet up with other trivia fans in a new lobby area or take part in a massive 64-player BUZZ! trivia showdown!

The game works by making you run around the studio on a massive BUZZ! Buzzer to answer questions, all of which are taken from the best content that you’ve created on the MyBuzzQuiz.com website.

Four colored answer buttons are laid out on the floor and you need to make sure you’re standing on the right answer when the time runs out. The winner’s decided over four rounds, and there are a number of exclusive Home prizes up for grabs for the greatest players. We are very excited to be bringing a fantastic new BUZZ! multiplayer game to Home and we know this is going to be a great social experience.

So keep an eye out for the new BUZZ! space, which will go live very soon. In the meantime, check out this virtual tour of the space and let us know what you think.

Just posting the full article. Trailer on the PS Blog too. Looks cool.

The Buzz game sounds kind of cool actually. All those early screenies of it mad me kinda hyped but knowing it wont be soon is nice to know.
Sony delivering the Home Goods still.

And if I enjoy it enough I may go pick up the game from walmart or something. It only costing 20 dollars is a also a great incentive.

If they have BUZZ in Home, what will Buzz at retail do?

Yeah..

It could be locked to only Buzz owners...

Or they really could just swamp the place with Buzz adverts...

Personally, I think it'll increase sales for Buzz. The idea of paying for a game where you answer questions is something the public do think is stupid, unfortunately. :lol

Can't you just run to the question that has the most people on it? It's like the "Ask The Audience" lifeline, that should work most of the time. :P

There is a similar sort of round in the actual game, people will start to play tactically by standingon the wrong answer before running to the correct one at the last moment.

:lol If only everyone made their avatars look like themselves IRL.

I wish the trailers and clips that played in the various spaces were live streams. And I don't mean live as in those games are being played live, but rather in the sense that a TV channel is broadcast to everyone in sync (what you see is what everyone else in your time zone sees), whereas a YouTube clip or on-demand TV show is a pre-recorded file you start from the beginning. Having a synchronized broadcast stream would ensure that you're seeing the same thing at the same time as everyone else. Say you're watching the Pulse video in the mall, and someone says, "GOTY right there!" The average person doesn't know it's at a different spot for each person, so it could lead to confusion, having to ask, "Where are you at in the video, I haven't gotten that far yet, thanks for spoiling it, etc." It just takes the social interaction out of the experience and shuffles it up. It's sort of like inviting someone over for a movie and then watching it on two different screens and starting each disc 5 minutes apart.

I still don't get it. I walk around, look at videos, and have someone try to rape me.

Or on the other hand, you could talk to folks and make friends, play all sorts of games there (texas hold em' bowling, various minigames etc) to win stuff for your avatar and you apartment (my personal quest is to gather as much free crap as I can get) look at previews of upcoming stuff, all in all its not a bad place to swing by and waste a little bit of time off and on. I myself just logged for the first time there a few weeks ago.

Before that I was like a lot of folks here wondering "whats the point?". But as of late it seems like Home has been stepping up its game and could really be something interesting if (big if) Sony can actually maximize its potential. Judging by the content thats been popping up just within the last few weeks its looking like they aim to do just that.

Hmm. There are actually three locked doors in the presentation space..

One is a big thick wooden door with greco-roman style architecture around it (dare I think, God of War?). Another is like an iron gate in a completely different style. And then there's a third which is a big thick metal gate with a red light over it (think military style).

If I had to guess, I'd think this is where E3 stuff will be going down in Home.
Don't know if this was posted anywhere yet, but James from the European blog confirms that Sony's E3 conference will be viewable from within home.

PSblog.Europe said:
You will be able to watch the SCEA press conference in Home, in a new space called the Presentation Podium. We’re still waiting for confirmation of when.

I know quite a few of you have been asking this question, so apologies for not replying to every one - busy times!
