PS3 Home Official Thread

No video streaming but picture frames ARE in as $3 add-ons. Although if THATS all you're looking for out of Home then you're REALLY missing the point...

Uh, how exactly? I barely use Home, the European version is a complete joke compared to it's US & JP counterparts (seriousley, fuck you SCEE) - but what would make me use Home a whole lot more would be if I could invite my friends to my Home apartment, chat via microphone, play music from my HDD on a virtual stereo, play videos from my HDD on a virtual TV, watch PlayTV on said virtual TV and easily launch into any game with my friends and back into the Home apartment once the games finished. Yes, it's cool chatting with and meeting random people, but I also want features that will encourage my real life friends to use Home and that will help make the PSN experience more seamless. I don't want new apartments and new costumes when theres really fuck all reason to use them.

Agree (but you can already chat via microphone).

But I think what really needs to be fixed is first and foremost the start up process. It takes AGES to enter Home. And I totally hate navigating the Mall stores interface. Slow as fuck.

It takes ages to do *anything* in Home. Startup's the worst offender, but it's like the system doesn't cache anything properly. World Map viewer is useless for several seconds while it figures out to download all the icons over again, even though you were just looking at it. Ditto for most other item browsers like stores and such.

One thing that drives me nuts about home is that i'm stuck in all french, I want to have it in english for fuck sake, gimme the option to do so.

I'm only gonna say a few things here since you seem so hell bent on hating Home.

A. Its a beta: That's not a cop out but a statement of fact. Home is an ever changing, ever evolving entity where today's bugs can be tomorrows fixes and whats on one server now can end up on another one later. (Siren anyone?)

B. It's a community: Now I'll grant you that not being able to invite a friend to your house sucks, but in the mean time there are clubs that can be made TONS of spaces available and lots more on the way. All geared toward getting PS3 players together and having fun.
I dunno about you, but since I been on Home my friends list has exploded. Now some folks I'll keep in touch with and others I won't but in all the service has done a very good job at what its designed for. Connecting people from all around the world.

C. ITS FUCKING FREE: So if you think its a waste of time then by all means quit wasting your time there. Or even better if it lacks the features that your looking for then come back later, I'm sure that Home is gonna be a MUCH different place a month or 3 from now. And when that happens enjoying it will cost the same then as it does now.... NOT A DAMN THING.

Ok that was more than a few things. Fucking sue me.

As soon as they started offering paid services in Home, there's no way they can cop out with their "beta"-tag.

Maybe in the US or Japan, in europe, there's nearly nothing going on and in germany there's like.. what three of that spaces, and one of 'em you can't use because as soon as you click on anything there's a message popping up that says "Needs localisation". That's not even a beta, that's an alpha. And they want me to pay money for virtual clothes there, lol!

MightyKAC said:

So are feces, but I won't eat them for lunch or build my house out of them because they smell and taste like shit. And when I leave for a while to come back later and see if they changed into cheesecake, they'll still be feces. Maybe with some maggots on top.

I would hope now that they've got picture frames out it will be only a matter of time before radio and TV applices start working for Home.

There has been a lot of changes for the service (at least for US) and from the apparent success of the system I expect it to keep changing and providing more and more entertaining content. The Home of today is not the Home of last year and won't be the Home of 2010.

Huh? How does being in Beta preclude them from charging for content? Good Old Games is in beta, should they give away all their games for free?

Hamster vs Human Dance-Off for Control of PlayStation Home
We told everyone that it was an April Fools’ joke; that there was no way a malevolent race of giant hamsters could take over PlayStation Home, replace all the music within it to Animal House’s “Chain Swing” and host a dance party in Central Plaza. We don’t know what their game is, but we do know this: the hamsters are back.

Ladies and Gentlemen, PlayStation Home has been taken over – conquered if you will – and this Saturday night, the humans are making their stand. Which is why this Saturday night, at 8PM PST, in Central Plaza, the Home community – both hamsters and humans alike - will meet on the battlefield of Listen@Home for the ultimate Hamsters vs Humans Dance-Off. It’s bound to look like a Pat Benatar video, but where shoulder dancing was utilized to combat violence against ladies of the night, the running man will be key in fighting off these furry invaders.

I find Home excruciating to start. I launch it, leave the room for some reason, and come back to see it stuck on some fucking HDD warning. Click that away, wait some more and then there's the start page. Click that away and then there's some message of the day. Click that away and it asks you what zone you want. Click through that and you might be asked do you want to download the zone. Click through that and eventually and finally you are in Home.

Aside from the initial setup process and rare events, Home should start and deposit you in your favourite zone with exactly and precisely ONE CLICK. Preferably in under 60 seconds. Preferably almost like Home is a natural extension of XMB rather than being Some Other Thing designed idiots from marketing and implemented by apes.

Someone in Sony really needs to get a clue. The user experience is abysmal. I don't care what design or technical reasons they may have had for doing it the way its turned out, it needs fixing.

They need to fix the instances in home. I don't know if it's been discussed why they can't before, I'd love to read about it, but it kills the Home experience. I'm so sick of going into new areas and not being able to try out any of the interactive experiences. Home continues to be just a flat out mess. I wish they had people with a better vision on this team.

Every few weeks I log in and it's the same crappy experience it was before.

I loggeed in to Home today just to sort of MST2K it with my brother, and we ended up messing around for several hours and didn't have too bad of a time between making fun of people and checking out mini-games. Bowling is actually pretty cool as are some of the arcade games. And we had voice chat going so we could talk the entire time.

I'm still not going to pay for any of the nonsense, but if they started offering more free stuff or a way to buy/win stuff by playing games, I'd be up for it. I am surprised that companies like Capcom and Naught Dog don't offer things like FREE T-SHIRTS and FREE FIGURINES for your place on it.

I used to mock the very idea of Home rentlentlessly, but if they get more content, espeically more FREE content, it could develop into a half way decent experience for something that is free. Still has some ways to go, though.

MST2K, huh? Oh boy.

I'm wondering if the speed of the inet connection affects getting in to HOME.. I constantly hear ppl here complaining about how long it takes to get in and move between sites.... yet I don't see these hesitations at all...

I didn't have that much delay and I was even using a somewhat distant wireless signal.

Capcom has free shirts in the mall and bugs for your home you can win by doing the mini game at its space.

Here is a list of free stuff.

I just want my music and movie streaming in my apartment; and for most/ all games to support party launching; so I can hang out virtually with my friends who go to different universities... when they add music and movie streaming Ill go back "HOME" .. I mean heck if its a copy write thing; then make it so you can only stream movies off of teh psn store; but give us something.. I want to watch movies/ music with my friends too!

Wow todays contest was a clusterfuck ala Killzone.

So it began around 12EST till 8EST. All you had to do was find pieces of a code(Bomberman Ultra) through out home and those 100 first ppl who got em all won the game! Easy eh. Well it was hard in that every hour or so you had to quit out of Home and enter again to see the piece of the code scattered throughout core spaces. Well after getting most of them, the last one was to be handed by a Home "guide" around 8EST but a HM decided to delay it which if you were there since noon, pissed tye hell out of you. Fine we wait the extra hour(9EST) and everyone is read with their PSPs and PC managers to input the last 2 letters...then as the "guide" says it, I(we) input to redeem it just to get an error!!! Apparenly the code got max out 2 secs after being out. At that point the shit hits the fan and madness begins.

Biggest BS 'contest' of the year. In the end alot of ppls got screwed, big time. Its believed during the delay, some1 started to leak the code.

I'm noticing it here and there with certain games but WTF happened to unlocking outfits of game characters by playing the game or accomplishing certain feats? And where are the 3D trophies to show off? THat plus the lack of watching movies/videos with in my apartment is disappointing. Just connecting with people around the world is actually useless to me when I can do that within many of the games themselves... to each their own.

Street Fighter IV awards clothing for your avatar (see post #3220 above). When Namco Museum Essentials comes out, that'll have some unlockable rewards for Home as well.

Apart from that, I'm really surprised there aren't more unlockables in Home. Even first-party games like Killzone 2 and inFamous missed the boat here.

Games should come with a free costume or outfit for your Home avatar. Something like this could benefit both the end user and the publisher. It would be a good way for Home users to show off their favorite game of the moment, and possibly meet other users who are also interested in the same game. For the publisher, it's free advertising if users are wandering throughout Home wearing the outfit based on your game.

Of course, besides the freebie outfit, there should be additional clothing or items which can be earned through skillful play.

3D trophies died when 2D trophies were implemented outside of the Home environment last year.

It's been neat showing off my Ghostbusters space to people. I've never socialized this much in home. Which brings me to another thing, I never realized how boring Home is. The best I can describe it is it's like a museum. Home would be awesome as the default GUI in place of XMB but as an external app you have to launch it's not so hot. Hopefully they'll do that for PS4.

You really aren't saying anything I don't already know and obviousley took my valid criticism as some form of trolling. Bravo. Also, FYI - i'm not "hell bent on hating Home", i'm just disapointed that proposed features that would encourage me to use the service a whole lot more and maybe spend some money are taking an age to arrive. You said people who are waiting for media sharing capabilities are "missing the point", well sorry if I don't like chatting to random people as much as you, but anyone who followed Home from announcement could easily be forgiven for thinking that media sharing & game launching capabilities are, at least in part, the point of Home.

You know what's more amazing? To find these "guides" you had to be on their friend list b4 they become a guide(meaning best friends!) or find one through someone who knows them. The only way I found one? I had to follow a friend who followed a friend....WHAT.THE.FUCK! That means that half the contestants were fucked from the start.

Even more retarded was the fact that details were vague and no one really (Home managers even) gave exact details. ppls began the search at 7AMEST due to not knowing the official start. I actually got details from my club leader. I have no idea who was telling him all the details but it wasnt online if you looked for it. I guess he knows alot of "guides" or something.

At the end, all threads at the Official PS forums got locked. They dont want to hear it and believe it was "all fair" and that it was "a fun day".

FUCK YOU HOME MANAGERS.

Not you Mr Jared, unless you were involved. Im talking about the big 3

Sony's Edward Talks PlayStation Home As It Hits 7 Million Users

Sony's online social gaming service Home may have had something of a troubled gestation, but it's maturing quickly and offers many opportunities for publishers, according to Peter Edward, director of the PlayStation Home platform for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Since the launch of the open beta in November 2008, the PlayStation 3-exclusive online world Home has gained 7 million inhabitants worldwide, 3 million of which are in Europe, and they have downloaded 6 million virtual items.

Edward said the global figure for downloads scales with users, but he was unable to disclose a precise total. The average Home session duration is 56 minutes.

Of course, the demographics are skewed towards the hardcore, but not significantly so: 80% are male, 18-35-years old rather than the 90% Sony expected.

More figures demonstrated their appetite for content. In five months, Red Bull's free Air Race game has been played by 873,136 unique users, clocking up over 2.5 million visits and 575,000 hours of gameplay. Average session duration is 39 minutes.

The game cost around 110,000 euros to develop, but has had an estimated marketing value of 1.5 million euros, according to a third-party media consultancy.

The three-month campaign around the Watchmen film clocked up 812,544 unique views - compromising 9.3 million viewed minutes - of an exclusive video with director Zack Snyder.

Over 3.2 million visits were made to the Watchmen area in Home. The two free avatar items - Rorschach and Nite Owl costumes - were downloaded 1.65 million times.

The two-week Star Trek campaign resulted in the sale of 450,000 costumes, 250,000 views of the video, while in two weeks, 125,000 people played Transformers puzzle games to gain a free virtual t-shirt and, if they completed all of them, a virtual trophy for their living area.

Home is the visual representation of the PlayStation community and it's the place companies can connect with their fanbase, Edward argued, pointing out the success of the EA Sports area and Capcom's release of custom Street Fighter clothes as examples of publishers making the most of the virtual environment.

Of course, there's also the opportunity to make cash by selling virtual items: something that will increase as Sony releases its in-Home currency to support Pay2Play features.

But it's not just about the money, Edward warned. "For Sony, revenue isn't the main driver for Home. We're in this for the longterm," he explained. "Home is the starting point for PlayStation 3 online, and that's something that gamers are going to expect as more games support Game Launch from within Home."

This sees Home acting as a lobby for online PS3 games: first seen with Warhawk, and since rolled out to the likes of LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Street Fighter 4.

"Players can set up their teams, choose the map and talk tactics before jumping into the game," Edward concluded. "This will become an essential component for all PS3 games."

Cool.

Also another heads up for NA Xi players. There are 5 virtual trophies to be gained! You get 3 from getting all butterflies/fragments+beating game. The other 2 are got by beating the Xi game a 2nd time with only 16 butterflies and 16 fragments. To do that you must delete your Home application from the XMb and start again. To be honest I didnt go back and do it but those interested better do it soon as Xi is shutting down soon...for good.

People who call Home a failure are both missing the point of it and unaware of how much money it's making. Basically, they don't know what they are talking about.

I am somewhat of an Home hater, bitching about the many faults it has just like any other, but I'm not calling it a failure cos clearly it isn't.

"The average Home session duration is 56 minutes."

I wonder how many people that includes who went once for an hour (plus time waiting in their apartment to download new areas) and then never went back. Technically their 'average visit time' would be over an hour.

No.
it literaly takes like ~10-15 secs to DL a new space. Max 30 secs. They are really small.
