PS3 Home Official Thread

I was in the Home beta right from the beginning and I complained about the start-up process all along, I don't think it's something they're going to do anything about to be honest. I agree though that it's massively too long, ideally you should press the PS Home icon on the XMB and be in home.

Mr Jared are you guys working towards the above happening?

In my opinion besides Game Launching this this one of the major features which would really drive home. If you could get something special for a platinum or a free PSN game for all Trophy Level 13 ppl for example (or one year free Qore for level 20). Some ppl already buy/rent every shitty PS3 game (Hannah Montana...) just for the Trophies. Such a reward system would sell some extra copies.

Sadly, Home Trophies eventually became pre-order bonuses.

It should be possible, World of Warcraft loads up in an instant practically.
WoW speed won't ever be possible I believe. First of all WoW is pretty much the fastest (3D) MMO to boot.
The real reason though Home can never boot up that quickly is because each time you do so the service finds a new server/dimension for you. As a MMO gamer you are locked to a specific persistent server forever (disregarding paid transfers), it always know where to go.
The number of servers/dimensions in Home is dynamic according to number of players online. Also, Home will have to 'matchmake' you into an appropriate server according to inhabitant numbers.

With that said though, I see no reason they couldn't shorten the boot up time to a third of the current one. It's just badly designed atm. Boot directly into the world. Have the daily message in game. Also, have a confirmation (Yes/No) in the XMB when clicking the Home icon.

1) Have Home always boot up into your local favorite apartment.

2) Remove the hard drive warning that requires you to press X. Let it appear and disappear after a few seconds if it must appear.

3) Keep the "Message Of The Day" but instead of it requiring you to press X to continue have Home keep loading in the background so that you can read while it loads. You still can press "X" to dismiss but you can be already loaded in your apartment when you do.

The changes above alone should make significant improvements to the Home bootup with minimal structural modifications. Add that with some optimizations and there's no reason why it can't load faster then WOW. WOW is a seamless world, Home is a small room. It seems like it has gotten worse lately. When selecting Home from the XMB I get a black screen for like 10 seconds before the logo even shows up.

Also, they need to optimize the avatar loading. It takes minutes for avatars to stop being ghosts and start showing what they are wearing and such.

Exactly. No reason why you can't instantly jump into your personal space as it wouldn't have changed since your last visit.

Not only that but it can be locally hosted. The problem I still see is that it still needs to poll and see the new spaces added to update the map, also poll friend locations and stuff. So it may not be instant, but it can greatly be reduced. And as many have mentioned already, eliminate the message of the day or move it to in PDA once you are in.

It's better to give users the option if they want to boot up directly to their apartment or where they were last.

The time it takes to load from one space to another must also be improved, it's pretty bad right now.

Its weird because there are games out there from Sony developers that load bigger more detailed whole levels in less time.

It should put you instantly into your Home apartment and once there it can start downloading any necessary updates in the background.

It would just be perfect if the game loaded the World Map when you first start. That would decrease load times and would be super convenient.

Exactly. My biggest interest is to see what new spaces are available. I don't want to take 5 minutes just to see that menu. If they could have it in the XMB when you press triangle or something, that'd be perfect.

I think the more spaces you download, the more it takes for it to load also. The 1st loading screen(black screen, grey bar) that you ever see takes like 10+ secs to show up for me. Normally that shows faster than that when you boot Home for the first time. I wish there was a "space manager" that could let you delete stuff/spaces you wont check again.

I find it funny that so many Home spaces are ghetto's or ruins of some kind. Resident Evil 5, Socom Confrontation, Siren (2x), inFamous, FarCry 2 (2x).

Ahh why isn't there a LittleBigPlanet space with game launching yet? Wasn't that the exact game they demoed doing it back in that promo video in 2007? Any comments, Jared?

I wrote up a very lengthy analysis of the Home user experience detailing all of the roadblocks that someone who would have a casual (initially at least) interest for what the service has to offer. It includes parts of what I suggested earlier. Posted it on the official forum in hopes that someone on the Home team would find out about it.

Nice analysis, I agree wholeheartedly with every point you made. I'd also add that the 'chip' interface is awful and need to go. When peoples item/clothes collections get larger it's gonna be a real pain in the ass to navigate such a chunky interface.

Great stuff. Will add some suggestions in that thread.

I noticed your first thing was about viewing which I wonder as well. Not sure if you were in the closed beta but it DID have a first-person view and it was great for things like this. No idea why they took it out, seeing as how it can still somewhat be activated when you bring up the chat pad and move around.

Anyways not sure if anyone saw already but the JP Home has a Hatsune Miku stage near the water. It's plays music and there's events and such. Also there is a huge Namco Bandai enclosure in the middle of the Home Square that will become a huge Gundam statue (I think).

In addition to what I posted earlier, we're also getting the Namco Museum space, and the Namco Museum Essentials will be launching on the PSN tomorrow with unlockables in home.

First PSN game to do so.

It's up now apparently, I am AFPS3 so I don't know, but there is a new mall and new stores in there.

Must be a US only thing as the EU mall is the same. The Fight Night space is quite good, plays music and there are dance podiums with poles so pole dancing is now in Home lol.

BUZZ! Space is the best Home space so far. I'm playing it right now.

Pros:
+ Tons of people (41 in my current room) rushing to different pads for whatever answer. It's actually pretty interesting to see (you watch it from a bird perspective) as it's looking down on ant farm and seeing how mass decisions come together, almost like fluid moving around (some people changing their minds in the last minute ..etc changing their spot, people cheering when getting it correct...etc...etc).
+ Infinite amount of questions. Random user written questions from http://www.mybuzzquiz.com and you can choose in what language as well.
+ Really well presented with dramatic music and so forth. I also like the initial space with tons of fans cheering outside the building, creates a game show/reality tv feeling to it all.
+ No waiting in line.

I would give this Space about a perfect score. It's really good, user friendly and it has infinite amount of content.

Yeah I liked Buzz a lot. I got in Home right when the servers came up so there was only like 5 people playing. Damn fools picked Beatles lyrics instead of Star Wars trivia so it wasn't easy, but I was winning. Then we got to the next round and the fools picked Horror trivia instead of Legend of Zelda trivia! (Sony, lulz) I was still winning but unfortunately I had to leave for work so I quit early. That was probably the best chance I would have had to beat the game.

It will be interesting to see how this game will be when the servers are more stressed but if it can handle it then it will be one of the best Home applications out there.

I'm in the EU and can only see Warhawk available in game launching options....... What am I doing wrong? I thought there was more available....

Just checked to see if Buzz was ready and it is, played it and it is quite fun but for a short time. Needs prizes unless it already does? I still prefer it to 1 vs 100

AAAAHHHHHH.

Could they spare a thought for those of us on Japanese machines? The UI says circle is to select and x is to exit, but on a japanese machine with US home the opposite is the case :lol
:(

Also, YOU WHORES. I was the only person to vote for a Garth Merengi's Darkplace quiz :(

Where are these quizzes coming from, btw? From the buzz game? Are they all user created?

http://www.mybuzzquiz.com

Buzz! PS3 has had user questions since day 1 (or day -100 since it includes the Beta questions). Should be thousands and thousands of user created quiz packages there now. Buzz! Home space just taps into the same library.

Okay wow the BUZZ space is awesome. I may even go make up some of my own quizzes now! :D All we need now is a LBP space with game launching and I shall be happy.
Along with all the promised things like trophy room, media streaming, etc.

So namco museum essentials is coming to the US store today?

I had quite a bit of fun with the japanese beta, unlocking items and stuff.

The Buzz space looks great.
Ill try it today.

The Buzz timer should definitely be shorter. Anyone with a laptop in front of them can google and walk to the answer way before the timer runs out.

Also it's too bad they didn't use this Buzz space:

I guess the one we have now is more capable of holding so many people.

The fight night club dj game is a nice little diversion.

Are they gonna activate the ring for robot punch fights?

I haven't been in home for a good long while. Seems it's growing quite a bit as a platform for free entertainment, and that's not so bad when it's something like the buzz space. Maybe that's where it's true worth will be afterall. When I think back to when I was a kid playing the SNES or whatever..there was nothing to do on the console except to play games you paid quite a bit of money for. That was also pretty much the case last gen too. But this gen, one thing that seems cool to me is that we're almost being flooded with free and cheap entertainment to consume in between the bigger 'paid for' games, and Home is pretty neat for that. As a kid with more time I'd have been totally enamoured with something like Home (now that there's a decent variety of diversions there). Kids these days are spoilt :p
