PS3 Home Official Thread

just went on home in ages, had to download 2 updates,..

wow that was fucking hellish. framerate is pure dogshit wherever you go it seems. it's literally chugging constantly. not fun at all.

The framerate will chug until the space you're in finished downloading whatever video plays in that area. After that it is generally a solid 30fps.

I can almost guarantee that it will just be launching the game like you normally would from the XMB.
Eugh this is so stupid if true. I just game lunched into Resistance 2 and it boots up the game like normal. I thought they'd at least boot into the online menu or create a game room like Warhawk does.

Why would I want to meet up with friends in HOME and gather them up then game launch like I normally would when I can do it from the XMB faster without having to load HOME up? Was looking forward to the update but this sucks.

Games that specifically support Game launching will do all that neat stuff. The difference between this and the XMB is that once you quit the game it will take you back to Home. Maybe you are going into Home and waiting for people to hit up the SF space so you launch Shatter and when you are done you quit Shatter and you go directly back to Home where your friends are waiting to Game launch with you. That's just one example but of course you could just use the XMB from the beginning.

Creepy, but I didn't think that the Singstar space was even up. That said, I can see them themeing the space differently based on featured artists. They can easily change the lighting colors and get a whole new feel to it.

Yeah but the whole point of game launching with friends is so that you join up with them in the game you want to. As it is you join up with them in HOME and launch the game like you normally would and you have to find each other again in whatever game you want to play. Sounds like a waste.

I guess it's a step forward but there is room for massive improvement. HOME should act as a universal party system across all games where you link up with friends and you can follow them into anything whilst staying connected to each other the whole time.

Did you really expect it work work any different? I mean, games have to be patched in order to support Home party launching, so you can't really expect a Home-side only update to magically apply that functionality to every game released.

Nice, Can I get one of those for my Male avatar? :lol

Oni will you continue posting a list of new freebies when they go up?

I like the glow int he dark shoes they ahve coming. But we don't really have dark spaces. Is day/night coming perhaps?

Home 1.3 not coming tomorrow like Sony said (well, actually they said in September, next Thursday will be October (If it comes then):lol .

SCE Home really makes it hard to dislike them. Generally saying you'll do something and doing it makes people not want to dislike you, but doing the opposite makes people dislike you and call you out and generally be bitchy. Why oh why can they not seem to get their act together with doing things in a timely fashion.

Stupid Sony.

Some new stuff - http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009...day-new-central-plaza-neptune-suite-and-more/ - tomorrow

Universal Game Launching. Come this Thursday, you’ll be able to launch from Home into any game whose disc you have loaded into your PS3. This is how it works: Titles that fully support game launching (like Street Fighter IV, Resistance 2, MotorStorm, and Far Cry 2) will be identified by separate icons that appear over an avatar’s head and will have varying degrees of additional multiplayer functionality built in. Simplified game launching will take you from Home to the start menu of your favorite games with ease. Never again will you have to sign out of Home to play with (or against) your friends. Simply insert the disc of your choice while in Home and follow the on screen directions.

In-Store Item Previewing. This feature will allow you to preview items of clothing on your character in 3D (including the ability to check out multiple items simultaneously to see what combinations best suit your taste). You’ll be able to preview all furniture in 3D as well, complete with zoom and rotate options so you can check your potential purchases from all angles.

New Emotes and Actions. You can flip a coin with your friends to decide whose apartment to retreat to, or play the old “pick a number between 1 and 100” game to decide who is hosting the next party in Central Plaza. You will also be able to pose your avatar in a variety of ways, adding significantly to your ability to express yourself in-world. Heck, there are even new dances to hit the SingStar Rooms with.

More Item Types. Including limited use items (like the brand new Shrink Cake that lets you shrink your avatar to a tiny size) and portable objects (think: Bubble Machine). These will be available shortly after the launch of the client. This list of objects includes a free camera that you can use to snap pictures from either a 1st or 3rd person view. The photos will automatically be saved to the Photo section of the XMB, from which you can then upload to the picture frames you have hanging in your personal spaces. Dates for the camera and other items will be announced very soon, so stay tuned to this blog (and be sure to check the Latest Updates tab in your Menu Pad, under Community).

Tons of Improvements. We’ve added some new categories of clothing (composite and outfits) that will allow you to customize your avatar with greater ease. We’ve optimized the targeting system. We’ve fixed a bunch of the bugs you’ve been reporting on the official Home Support forum. We’re even giving you the option to determine your cache size (you can choose from 3, 5, 8, and 12 GB).

Just not getting how this is a big deal. Have the home team used the PS3 firmware in the last, oh, year?

You haven't had to leave home to start a game in a long long time, thanks to the firmware. Every PS3 game has 'universal game launching' since in-game xmb arrived.

Yeah, they should call it universal-back-to-Home-launching. Though I will try it first, because MAYBE you can create parties for all games (just w/o game settings etc.) and the joining people need to input the disc before everyone launches the game at the same time (when the host starts it). That would be kinda nice I guess.

meh @ no camera tomorrow though :/ (if it's the same for PAL Home etc.)

I agree. FOr some reason the Signstar dancing is mesmerizing. I guess its the colors and catchy techno.

I love the Singstar space. so much fun.

Anyway, I really wish that the camera would be there. Photo exporting to the XMB would be awesome, but something else we have to wait for. I'm really excited about the new World Map in the Central plaza though. Looks like it loads quickly. Hopefully that has to do with the cache.

Huh. Just looked at the official blog.

So a new underwater space as well, it looks huge. And it has a pet (that's a first).

Also the map thing is interesting and speedy.

And leaderboards and rewards for the spaceship minigame.

I think they should have a sample apartment for us to walk around in before purchase to decide if we like it or not.

And Hot Shots Golf space coming too.

Beefy update tomorrow.

Does GAF have like an official club room or something?

There are some GAF clubs but the club houses are so pointless and small that they're useless. If GAF could have a Home space that any GAFer could enter then I'm sure it would be used, but the clubs only allow a rediculously small number of people.

They said that? :o
yes. There are 200 total to give away for the US and they are doing it in lots of ways. In the demo, in Home and other stuff they said to look out for. I haven't heard a word about how they are giving them away, even in the beta so I don't really know.

Yeah. I don't get that feature at all. The only benefit would be that you get back into home (exactly where you left off perhaps?) once you quit the game. Also, I wonder if your avatar (idle of course) shows up in Home while you play a game.

You can't seriously expect that to EVER happen unless game support it.

I think it currently reserves 2 or 3. Thats the size of the cache in the game data folder I think.

Don't get your hopes up, all it says is that it'll take you to the start menu of games that don't support Home launching. I think the only functionality the PR mentioned beyond simply using the in-game XMB to launch games is that apparently Home will detect when you insert a game disc and pop up a dialog to start the game. So for PSN titles... I dunno. I would assume it'll at least take you back to where you are in Home after you quit.

Yeah, it's 3

but what is in that 3 GB cache? I mean Home is painfully slow, and I wonder what that 3 GB cache does that this 12 GB will do better?

Seriously I would play this if they would just give out more free items. The original trailers made it appear like the sims, but everything is so expensive... why not bundle a ton of items for like 5 dollars?

Also what's going on with plasmas in HOME? What about arcade cabinets and that fun stuff?

DMeisterJ said:

Well it currently saves all the spaces you download, images of all clothes, trailers , posters, music and so forth. Those get updated as they change in the location (trailers in theater...)

If we allocate more, I hope we can locally save every item in the store and allow for a mass download of all new spaces, items in the background to smooth transition when exploring. Also maybe cache items from friends, and clubs so that as much as possible is pre saved and as little as possible is downloaded on the fly every time.

Instant on store and wardrobe would be ideal to me. Its a weird design choice but the store is incredibly slow when you enter it during peak hours and instant on when there is little internet traffic, which means every item is downloaded every time.

TTP said:

They made it sound like it was going to be massive by saying it was universal launching from HOME. We could launch games from HOME ever since in game xmb and now we can do it within the HOME game pad thing? :(

The other improvements are welcome but I would like if you could form a party in HOME so if you were with a friend if he ran into the theater following him would put you in the same theater etc.

They do give out tons of free items regularly. I think the list of freebies is near or over 100 available right now. A ton of stuff can be earned now by playing free minigames.

A lot more stuff is event based (E3 specials, 4th of July specials) and are free but were only available for certain periods of time. And then there are some freebies that come with demos (Infamous costume), retail games (batman space and items and clothes) or as preorder bonuses for retail games (Killzone).

They make a lot of money off that stuff, so they cant give everything away, but there is a huge selection fo freebies if you go on regularly.

Also, arcades are already available. Its a matter of more developers putting their games on them, but as far as Sony is concerned they created the infrastructure already.

I'm talking on a bigger scale, not quite sims, but more like sims lite. The home customization sucks as of now. I expected something completely different. I still check the updates now to see if anythings changed, but it's still got a long way to go.

Some of that stuff surprising is actually pretty cool. The problem is there is not nearly enough. I'm talking about furniture, accessories, all that stuff. There are a good amount of free clothes and some cool collectibles, especially the arcade cabinets (which still cost 5.00 to unlock). Sims was a good game at the time, not really my favorite thing, but I think with big decoration/furniture sets this would have a larger appeal.

To unlock the game cabinets you just need the Namco Museum demo and beat the challenges in that game.

And on those cabinets you can only play a demo of the game.

So what if you have the full game? Will the cabinets be full versions?

The other thing is, are the cabinets real time, or is it like the Namco Home space, where it'll actually load the game of your HDD?

Home game launching is literally what was in the beta...

Just open a game.. then when you quit.. it loads home..

Thats a year old feature isn't it?

The thing is that Sony said that its a developer and third party driven model. If EA wants to invest into creating Sim like items and put them up for sale, great, they can. But Sony have said they won't be the ones to fill the place with items and squeeze out the third parties.

Its sort of like this: if Sony puts out 30 types of couches in all all sorts of colors and fabrics and styles, then EA and other third parties wont create couches because the market is flooded. Same for every other item. So then those third parties will have no interest in coming to Home since they wont be able to sell anything.

Remember, its only been out 1 year and its grown by leaps and bounds. Both in functionality and content and quality. And to top it all off, its still in beta.

I am not saying its perfect, not even close, but honestly its exceeded my expectations by a lot. The variety of spaces and clothes is very good. And as more and more games come out, it seems almost all big games have some tie in to Home, through spaces, clothes and items. I mean jus tin the past few months we have seen Infamous, Batman, Ghostbusters tie ins. I am sure I am forgetting some.
